Recycled Vintage Maps-Hat Boxes

I posted this on trash to treasure,too. My sister gave me 2 hatboxes she found at a yard sale, she always finds great stuff. I decided I'd decoupage them and use them as a gift box, a gift in a gift! I'm going to make some cone coffee filter roses, and find a vintage looking luggage tag to finish it off. Oh, and add a cord handle.

Kudzu, I love your map hatboxes and the star is just awesome, I would love the have the directions for the rose.. that is soooo pretty.. How did you apply the map to the boxes and how did you make that star.. You have so much talent.. I love to see all your stuff..
I am so sorry about your finger and the staple, that had to be awful, I know what you mean about the grandkids.. once when I could not breath, my young grandson was able to call 911 and get me help.. I use to smoke than , that was the last day I ever had a smoke and that has been over 5 years ago.. He is so proud of me.. and tells everyone that he is the reason I quit.. and he is right, when I saw the look on his face when he thought he would lose his granny.. You take care of yourself and you are right to check you meds.. you could have some that are thinning you blood..

Wow Connie! You have some setup going, that's impressive. I'll comment on the ones I know about. I grew Vintage Visalia in the mtns but it never got taller than 4 feet up there with a 3 month growing season and the deer kept eating on it. It was the only large rose I had that last the 13 years were there, through all the snows I did no winter protection either. I've seen the rose bush at the nursery, it's huge, it stands about 8' tall or so. I don't care what HMF says, when I went down there to get another for this house and saw how large that rose gets I decided I wouldn't have the room for that one after all, LOL* Sequoia Ballet is another I wanted to get and was dissuaded from doing so last spring as a new rose. It had a great growing season even with our weeks of 100's and the rose bush they grow the cuttings off of is gorgeous and easily 5'tall and it was still immature. I got one in Oct after the manager admitted then it's a terrific rose, she was very impressed by how vigorously it grew even in the heat. In two months of growth this rose ended Dec 17"Tx19"Wide. Thanks To Sue is slow growing for me, I had it in a bad place the first fall and it was one of the last I transplanted last spring. I have it in full sun now and in cooler weather the roses are more an apricot and hotter weather they're yellow. It has unusual growing shape and leaves and as the plant matures then it holds the blooms up better. The foliage is very pretty on this rose. I ended the first full year with the rose at 18"Tx40"Wide. I was looking to replace two roses in front of my dining room in back of my other minis and I love the Hybrid Bracteatas, I asked and the manager reaffirmed that Precious Dream and Out Of The Night will both be excellent roses. The latter had 4 fat buds that tried blooming end of Dec but it was just too cold by then and the roses aren't very nice looking. Tells me though this will be another of my roses that should go all the way through on milder years. These should be in the neighborhood of between 2 and 3' tall depending on your season. joyful guy: There is now a device similar to a really small tall BBQ....you put the charcoal in the top part of it, the crumpled newsprint in the bottom. Set it ON TOP of the grill. Set the newsprint on fire, and in about 5 minutes your charcoal is burning nicely, the newsprint has all burned up and you pour the charcoal out of the device and into the bottom of your grill. So no lighter fluid is needed, and it makes BBQing much much easier and fun. The toughest part of BBQing for me is lighting the coals and making sure that they stay lit, this device takes a lot of that frustration out of the equation. Newsprint: They can also be rolled into "logs" to use as fireplace starters (but don't use the colored print). Passed on to a local organization that deals with children for placing on the table during arts and crafts time. Useful for creativity, having children cut out the words and make stories (kinda like old kidnapping messages). And although not for everyone, it can even be used as wall paper. I did not use newsprint, but I did use the picture books that get damaged beyond repair to "wall paper" one wall on my children's bedroom. Simply took white glue (bought in the gallon), thinned it out and placed full pages on the wall until the entire wall was covered. I used a lot of different books (cleaned out the bookshelves) and my girls are all young so the resulting wall is very colorful and the girls have fun making up new stories for their old favorites depending on the pages they are surrounded by. Since books vary greatly in size, they are placed higgly-piggly not in rows, but newsprint could be done in rows. The boys who are older wanted their room done in old maps. You could finish with a coat of varnish, although since my kids are young I did not. I foresee more pages going up in the future when their tastes change. The white glue is easily removed with a flat paint scraper, not sure that varnish would be. For the colored ads, I have started having my children cut out their "Christmas wish list" and paste them in small books (recycled paper stapled together). It helps greatly when their fondest wish is "this doll......it's got a hat....it's called Hannah (Hadley)....it's really cool! .... and they have it at Wal-mart (K-mart)." Has anyone mentioned packaging? I put it in anything I mail out that requires a bit of stuffing. The soldiers appreciate it as a little bit of home, and I'm told appreciate it almost as much as the care packages....crumpled and all. Old phonebooks: Pass on to individual who does a lot of business (personal or otherwise) in an area that lives outside of it. Perfect for small gluing projects, fingernail painting done by small children, other projects that only require a very small area. When done with project, simply rip out the pages that have been affected and toss. It occurs to me that most of mine have to do with children. =0) That's the season I'm in right now.

Hope you are recovered !!! Love your hat boxes, they turned out great. They will look store bought or better with cord added.Those are great maps, lots of color! The star is lovely you could add a hanger of little piece or 1/8 ribbon on back of 1 point about inch down so it wouldn't even show when hanging up on wall or she could use it in a standing pic. easel & have it sit on a desk!! Finally found my way back to this topic. LOL I'll give my input on Facebook. I'm on Facebook. but I wouldn't want to use it for something like this. I don't want to post my comments about why here, but will be happy to share them by e-mail if anyone is interested. And now for today's Bingo word: Love Story Did I forget to post one yesterday? I'll have to look back over the list. Our internet connection seems to go out several times a day lately so I don't know what's up with that. Sometimes if I try to sign on several times that day and can't get through I give up and try again the next day. It went down to 12 degrees last night. Also our high for today was a new LOW for a record high if you can understand that. I think it was for 2 days in a row that happened. Brrrr! But no snow so that's a plus. I do have some good news. The round robin package from Melinda arrived here today. She enclosed a note that she can't get on houzz so I hope she gets it worked out. There were really nice things in the package. I think some members added more things than they took out. I won't list all of it, but I got flower stickers, baking cups with a snowflake design, a spool of wired ribbon, tissues, magnets, and note cards. The seeds are great, too -purple fountain grass, big juicy strawberries, baby's breath, variegated tomatoes, and several more. Thank you, everyone! I haven't done it yet, but I'm going to try to e-mail Melinda to let her know her package arrived. I'll ask how she's doing because I know we all hope she is doing better. Well, the later it gets in the day, the colder I get so I'm going to burrow under my afghan again. It's supposed to be warmer tomorrow. Jeanne

Thanks so much,ya'll! You should've heard him telling his Mama all about it when she got home. I should mention he is only 5 years old,lol. He says Mama, MeMe had blood going and going and going :D We told him how good and brave he was..I'm just fine, I'll have to make another appointment, since my next one isn't for 3 months. And I totally forgot about the aspirin I take every day....
About the crafts, all the links are on my blog, but I will add them here.
The hat box was easy, I had HossFly measure the side so I could cut it out just the right size. I used my rotary cutter and mat that I used to use for making quilts,lol. For the lid and the bottom round parts, I just traced it and cut it out about half an inch bigger all around. I cut little snips in it like you would if you were sewing curves, and I used cheap white school glue mixed with enough water to make it smooth like paint.Glue on the top and bottom circles, then the side of the box, and the side of the lid. I didn't have to worry about the fit, because these boxes are made for covering in crafting. You can buy these papier mache hatboxes at places like Hobby Lobby and Michaels for about $5..that's the original price on the bottom of mine, but she paid .50.Try to smooth out all the air pockets, but I wouldn't worry about it too much, it all flattens out once it starts drying, it just might have a few wrinkles, which would be perfectly okay if you want an antique look. Then I used the water/glue mixture to paint it, like you would use Mod-Podge. I only used two coats on the hat boxes, it was plenty. Brown age spots showed up, but they pretty much go away once it dries. Also I sprayed it with a clear spray you can find by regular spray paint, about a dollar a can at WalMart. Two coats of that. The star pattern link is on my blog,too,but I'll add it here :D I cut out two stars, and one piece of white posterboard. I scored the posterboard according to the directions, then glued the map on one side, trimmed it, and glued the other side and trimmed it, then folded it along the scored lines. I happen to have a metal star just like it, so I took it off the wall and laid my paper star over it to dry. You could put something under the center of your star to hold it up a little while it dries.
The roses........now those are just GORGEOUS! I've never seen any more realistic in my life! I saw this on Martha Stewart, and the nice lady Cassie has the pattern there with directions. Of course you could buy the kits, or buy them ready made,too,from her site. I still don't have my green floral tape, so I haven't really made any yet, just that practice one with no tape on it.
