You can buy a big roll of twist tie in the gardening department and cut the length you want or just get extras from the produce department at the market.

I use rubber bands around the whole bag of chips or noodles, or whatever, and plain old binder clips from the office supply store for bread wrappers or bacon packaging. Cheaper and recyclable (washable for sanitation, if your house mouse comes back). You can buy boxes of twist ties from paper goods supply stores on line like: Uline, Paper Mart, Nasco, Clearbags, etc. Some are plastic covered instead of paper so they would be washable too. Steer clear of metallic covered or colored though, they might not be food safe.

I buy a cheap package of spring type wooden clothes pins. Fifty or so for a dollar at the dollar store. Otherwise I have also had the roll of twist tie from the gardening department. Those even come with a little cutter on the package so you can make the tie longer or shorter as you need it. Like Nancy says many paper places sell packages of twist ties as would craft places such as Franks or any place that sells baking supplies that include glassine bags and the ties to close them. Party stores, etc.

You all suggesting I ....ahem....take more than my share when buying some onions?

I use clips and rubber bands...but there are tines you just gotta have twist ties...
Problem is the 2 stores I like best all use those plastic clip things....and I hate them.
I may have to pop for some of those non zip baggies....meanwhile I am using twist ties with all the paper worn off....

Any of your local stores have a bulk foods section?
You could ASK if you can have 10-15 of the ties from there.
Around here they're all wide twist ties rather than the little plastic clips that come on bread bags.

Ask on Freecycle! I have so many, I never even thought about NOT having some. But yeah, you can buy a roll of it in the garden center, people use it to stake their plants with. We could all put some in an envelope and mail them to you and you'd have so many you wouldn't know what to do with them all...HAHAHA!

The Dollar Tree store in our area usually has plastic rolls of pre-perforated green twist ties for $1. I think there are 50 on a roll.

Or we could do a Twist Tie shower for you, Linda. One of my favorite Jean Shepherd stories is the one where Ralphie's mother participates in a washrag chain letter and is inundated by hundred of them.

Or a twist tie chain letter for Linda. But just keep adding her name to the bottom.

Funny, just last night I dumped all my twist ties for the same exact reason. What the heck are they doing crawling in my flatware and gadget drawers? I can assure you there's no food in either. Yet those are the only two places I see poop. Makes no sense, but I guess it's time to buy traps.

I never use twist ties (unless the come on bread... then I use them for that, and throw them away when the bread goes moldy (never finish a loaf before it goes bad)). Have you heard of those silicone bag ties? They are reusable which is great. I didn't even know about them until I told a friend I was going to Williams Sonoma and he asked me to pick some up for him.

I buy 6" plastic or 10" paper coated wire ties in the garden dept. (I cut the longer ones in half.) They're not very expensive and serve any need quite well.

About 1/2 of the bread items around here still come with twist ties on them and I normally toss them when I open it. They're seldom sealed tight. I had a need for a twist tie a couple months ago when I had to attach a new lanyard on my PDA and it had this little tiny spot to feed it through then make a u-turn and come back out. It was so small the twist tie wouldn't fit in there with the coating on it. Had to strip it back and just use the wire.

I bought a roll of them for the garage and got some longer ones for some stuff I was setting up at work so they occasionally get used in the garage. For virtually all plastic bags for food storage I buy zipper lock or slider lock type. And I almost always buy the freezer bags since they're heavier.

My cousin OTOH... I don't think can live without twist ties!

Come to think of it the larger sized cheaper bags probably still come with them on the non sip/slider or fold/lock top bags. I think garbage bags come with them too if they're not handle-tie. I haven't bought any in so long I don't know if they still do or not. (I always tie the tops of the garbage bags too so none get used there either.

But for just a few, I'd just ask and I'm sure they'd say help yourself. Or you could legitimately put them on produce or meat bags when you buy produce/meat and have a clear conscience. That's what they're for after all. Or ask a neighbor if they have some.

I also just throw them away. I put opened bags of beans, rice, lentils, etc, in those blue Ball quart jars with lids, otherwise I spill the darned things everywhere, even with twist ties.

I use good old Office Depot binder clips and wooden spring clothes pins for sealing everything else.

OMG I hate twist ties! I used to save them for my Dad who was an o/c twist tie person.

Linda, send me your address (you have my email or send me a fb message) and I'll send you some. I buy the gallon plastic baggies with the twist ties but I use the clippies below and usually just throw them out. I have 2 1/2 boxes in my pantry right now and so the twist ties are yours.
