LOL, Strawberry, I HATE Pinterest. I do hate Facebook more, but just a little bit.

I click on something on Pinterest, thinking I'll get a recipe. Nope, I get a link to a blog that made the recipe that links to another blog that made the recipe that links to a blog that made the recipe. Finally I find the recipe, but only after I read countless blog pages that don't interest me and sometimes I never find the recipe. (sigh) It appears to be the way people force me to read their blog.

I do appreciate that at least you put the recipes all in one place, that makes far more sense to me than countless links.

That's funny Annie. I like the blog since they "psyche" me up to do the cooking ... otherwise I'll think it taste like crap and I won't bother to try. You are right about click one place, to re-direct to another place. My computer is new and fast so I don't mind.

I prefer the recipes submitted in this forum ... I cut them, and paste them in a Word-document to print them out. It's faster than Pinterest. Pinterest is to drool over stuff that other people make. It's called "virtual memory" cooking ... you pretend that you cook, then open the cupboard to stuff one's mouth with Peanut-Butter sandwich.

I have not signed up for Pinterest yet. I did check out some of the things you've pinned and there are some that I look forward to trying. Anything crockpot peaks my interest at the moment as the kitchen is going to get an overhaul.

I looked at GW's page. I noticed they have a picture of ynnej's potato skin bruschetta. I believe ynnej left in October. She was one of our few vegans/vegetarians and had some interesting recipes. She came here wanting to learn to cook meat for her family.

I miss her and wish she would come back. That said, there are lots of new people here (you included) and that is making things new and fresh!

Straw, you are doing good. I just repinned several of your pins. It's fun for those of us who love to read recipes. I've become totally addicted and have been making new recipes constantly.

I'll post a link below to my big board, where you can see all of my subjects. I am keeping my big board all food so that, in a way, it reads like chapters in a cookbook. Some people follow all my boards by just clicking at the top, others pick the boards that are the most interested in.

Towards the bottom are the shared boards that I am on. Those are some of the best to follow if the subject is of interest to you and contain mostly wonderful recipe pins. You want to follow others so that you can see a big variety of recipes with out having to go hunting to hard.

FYI...be sure to check each pin before you pin it to your boards. Just click on the picture and read the recipe to make sure it is what you want and....also....to make sure you are not pinning spam. I do that with all my pins.

I'll check back here to see if you or anyone else has questions.

I have a Pinterest account, but like Annie I hate having to click through so many layers to get anywhere. I find Pinterest most useful to use as a kind of visual filing cabinet to store images I want to be able to find again. For example, I would Pin items as I have been planning our bathroom renovation. I am not really interested in the social aspect of it.

I have a Wordpress blog where I store recipes. I certainly don't have all my favorites on there but over the years it will grow. I'm finding it pretty useful, and can share with friends pretty easily. I could make it private but have not chosen to, so anyone could stumble across it, but it isn't meant to be a New England Smitten Kitchen. I have a gardening blog and the recipe site is more of a companion and filing system.

Thank you, Nancy, for your very organized Pinterest Big Board, it makes it easy to choose. The crock-pot Salisbury Steak sounds yummy. My kid has 6 adult teeth, the rest are baby ... so I cook lots of soft food for her loose teeth. Thanks for the comments on Pinterest recipes, it helps to make it better.

I had to get my husband's help, he's a software engineer, to put a "Pin it" button on my Favorite Bar, so I can pin ANY document on my board. I'll experiment to see if I can pin recipes posted on in this forum.

I found the Salisbury Steak in crock-pot recipe from Nancy's Pinterest. It was slow in loading since it's from a blog. So I re-pin it from allrecipes.com and it's faster to upload. Here's the recipe, (thanks, Nancy):

2 poundslean ground beef
1 (1 ounce) envelopedry onion soup mix

1/2 cupItalian seasoned bread crumbs
1/4 cupmilk
1/4 cupall-purpose flour

2 tablespoonsvegetable oil

2 (10.75 ounce) canscondensed cream of chicken soup

1 (1 ounce) packetdry au jus mix

3/4 cupwater

1.In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, onion soup mix, bread crumbs, and milk using your hands. Shape into 8 patties.
2.Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Dredge the patties in flour just to coat, and quickly brown on both sides in the hot skillet. Place browned patties into the slow cooker stacking alternately like a pyramid. In a medium bowl, mix together the cream of chicken soup, au jus mix, and water. Pour over the meat. Cook on the Low setting for 4 or 5 hours, until ground beef is well done.

Sometimes I don't see the difference between Pinterest and simply bookmarking the page. It's just a way to create a shortcut, although you do get to snoop through other people's pins. I also dislike fighting my way through so many layers.

Annie, I hope you know Elery is on Pinterest. He currently has a recipe for Korean Sizzling Beef under the category "Books Worth Reading". I giggled when I saw that.

The site I really don't get is Twitter. I've tried it and I just don't see the appeal, although it seems half the world is tweeting.

For me, Twitter is information. I find out about stuff I wouldn't know to read or listen to. I don't get the "how many followers can I have" thing. I think I have six, LOL.

Twitter is all about reading stuff on other people you are following.

For instance - I follow Ellen Degeneres. She tweets "jokes of the day" and show information, etc.

And I follow the Dalai Lama and he has a spiritual tweet of the day - although I will say he has been slackin off the last month. Oh well - I guess even spiritual leaders need their time off.

But then there is the # (hashtag) thing at Twitter that confuses people. If you click on that you can comment on the same subject on another Twitter page.

To those of us over 50 it used to mean "number" or "pound."

I must be following the wrong people on Twitter. I think i have one follower, maybe not even! I find the Pages feed on Faceook to be more interesting and also a little more selective about what they post. One of my favorite pages is Next Avenue from PBS, for people of a certain age!

Yes, dedtired, I know Elery is on Pinterest. So is Ashley, she finds patterns for her crafty stuff, something else I don't do. (grin) They're both on Facebook too, and Ashley texts like mad. I don't Twitter or Tweet or do Pinterest or Facebook and I got a text once, couldn't read it and deleted it. I've never gotten another one, not that my cell phone is ever charged anyway. Elery's sister is on Pinterest too, they all keep trying to convince me that I love it, but I don't. Every time I go there, I end up getting all ticked off and impatient.

Chrome is my main browser, and Pinterest has changed. They want me to Log in before I can do anything. Nothing is clickable. Does anyone have that problem? I don't know how to copy the home page to post it.

I tried it on IE and it's normal, the way that it used to be.

I'm exactly like Annie, it takes me forever to find a recipe that I clicked on, and a few times, I never did find the recipe! Just blog after endless blog.

I get tired of the same hairstyles, same outfits, same nail designs, etc. I tried just clicking on food and drink or whatever the category is, and there was a lot of other crap thrown in to wade through.

I can take or leave it, (as you can tell) lol.

Hi jasdip: Chrome is my default browser too. Let's see why: click on the "round wheel" symbol next to the Internet star in upper right corner. Select "Internet Options", then look for "Search Providers", click Settings. Make sure that Google Chrome is enabled, and click on the box below "do not allow program to change my search setting".

I installed some "snack program", and it changed my search setting, it was annoying.

Pinterest is fast if you pin your recipes from food.com or allrecipes.com. I don't like recipes pinned from blogs because it takes longer to load. I can pin the web address of a thread from this forum, but I can't pin a selected text from a thread.

I totally agree that Pinterest is a big time suck. There are ways to get the most out of it though and not be clicking for hours to find something.

I just started following Pat (Hi Pat!) her boards are set up much the same as mine. So I followed all of hers. If you don't want to follow all of someones boards, just click on the small boards that you like that they have.

After you have set up some boards and followed a few people or other boards, then click on "followed" at the top of the screen. This is a good time to bookmark the site so that you don't have to sign in every visit. I never have to sign in, every time I open the site I am right where I want to be. I can see everything that is on my "feed" (that's what I call the ever changing pins I look at). Every time some one that you follow adds a pin you will see it. You are in control of what you see this way and can avoid most of the garbage.

I mentioned this before but I think it's worth mentioning again, always click on a pin before you save it to see that it takes you directly to the recipe. If not...don't save it! I also like to look and see if the recipe has ingredients that I would use. If it does have a mix or a can of goop, then I decide if it's worth saving. Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

The big boards (I'll link below to one I really like) some are a mixture of crafts and cooking and some are all recipes. I don't follow but one or two that are a mix. I opened up a second Pinterest account for other stuff, so I could keep my main boards all cooking.

This all takes more time in the beginning than it will after you get going. Many times I have gone to my boards and in seconds printed off a recipe that I want to try. I think of it as my recipe storage site.

For years I have come to the CF for cooking and baking inspiration. The WFD thread was a favorite but I too, have noticed that many of the good cooks that always shared recipes wandered off. I tried to do the Cookalong threads to keep recipe posting and ideas going but saw that really slow down too. I'm thankful to the good cooks that have hung in here and there are some new ones that I really enjoy. I guess that is why I am loving Pinterest, it's all about the recipes and no personality conflicts...and no trolls. Pinterest is trying hard to reduce spam, yet at the same time you can research a possible purchase.

Hi Nancy (Wizardnm): I love your QUICK DINNERS Pinterest board, I put it on my Favorite Bar, so I can grab a recipe when time-crunched. Lots of pasta-dishes there, my kid will love it.

Nancy, thanks for your Pinterest link. I don't have that many recipes on there at all. I like Pinterest , time suck that it is, cuz I get so many ideas about lots of things, not just food. Great household tips, beautiful photos, fun quips and some outrageous fashions. It's like thumbing through a multi interest magazine.

You know what really helps with Pinterest? An add-on called Thumbnail Zoom Plus. It blows up little images.

Thumbnail sounds like a great add-on. I use Firefox as my default browser these days, love it.

I'm like Annie, I dislike most of the social networking sites. I signed up on LinkedIn after repeated nagging from BIL. That brought me tons of spam from wannabes looking for money. And they weren't even from Nigeria. So I left. Can't see the point of Facebook or Twitter and the 2 times I tried Pinterest I gave up in exasperation. Who has time for this?

The real problem is that I have no patience at all and I hate computers and cellphones. I only use my computer to send/answer email, post here and check the local news! I never use the cell phone, I finally got a pay as you go phone and can never use up the 60 minutes before my 120 days are up. (sigh) They should let me buy something like....10 minutes!

I'm in the same boat as you are, Annie, even with my Bachelor degree in Computer Science. I'll ask my husband (a software engineer) about Jasdip's problem with Pinterest. From Straw (Strawberryhill): Pinterest does take time initially to set up one's board. It took me a week to search Food.com and Allrecipes.com for the best recipes to pin on my board. Yes, it takes time to build a board from scratch. But with experienced folks like Nancy, Mabel, and Pat_t who shared their recipes ... one doesn't need to waste time setting up one's board. It's easy to pick a good recipe from someone else's Pinterest board.

Straw, thanks for your explanation and to Nancy, et al, your enthusiasm about this medium leads me to want to investigate it a little further. I set up an account last year, but couldn't figure out what I was doing enough, got aggravated and never went back. I really like the idea of the recipe board. Okay, I'll give it another try and see if I can figure out what you all are doing and how you're doing it. I may come back and have you all tell it to me like I'm six if I can't figure it out this time!

Obviously I have no life. tee hee hee. Because my Pinterest boards are VERY organized and I'm constantly going through them to make sure they are properly done.

I love you sense of humor, Pat ... I like it here since I can be zany and crazy. I've just posted some recipes from Epicurious (professional chef recipes) onto my Pinterst. The plus? It has the prof's techniques. The minus? some recipes don't have a pic., so I pin irrevelant stuff like an empty saucepan. I'll repost the link to my Pinterest board, I find that recipes from Epicurious is fast to load like Allrecipes.com, minus the chit-chat of blogs. My most recent post is the yummy Salmon Cakes with lemon yogurt sauce.
