leave 1.5 feet at ground-a tote or basket will be pulled OUT to you when you want item so you don't need full 2 feet...medium sized totes are nicer than huge oversized ones from my experience. I'd plan between shelf spacing at 15-18 inches as you will reach IN and organize,place and pull out,etc....need "hand room"- maybe 21 inches at one spot. At the top shelf allow 2 feet to ceiling....rarely used/out of season blankets in storage bags/etc.... very handy so make it bigger....you'll need a stepstool anyway...so allow for substantial storage there. Are you placing fixed positions....can't this be flexible/adjustable shelves.

I'd do colorful carpet squares wall to wall -- would define a play area (no toys off the rug at end of day!) and the squares are easy to clean and/or replace in case of a stain. Beyond that, just lots of stuff down at short people level -- bins for toys, cushions for lounging, maybe a low bookcase. I like the idea of chalkboard doors, and you could use those lower cupboards for kid stuff too. Probably the higher shelves will need to be for adult stuff for some time yet -- you could put Read Aloud books up there, or wipes or other supplies... A low table for scribbling could be good -- we had one with folding legs that could be stowed if more floor space was needed for other things.

100% hire a closet company. they know things you can't possibly think of. I splurged on my master closet and hired Calif. Closets. Since you're doing a new build, it shouldn't be that much of an expense. of course, you can go crazy and pick the most expensive items, but I kept mine decent. a rep comes out and looks at the space, views your clothes and items, wants and needs, and tailors it to you. Since you have specific needs, he/she will design the closet around you. I did my own painting, carpeting lighting and had a custom piece of quartz installed. . Best money ever spent this is the space before the drywall went up. it's only 7' wide, but 12' long? can't remember. this shot shows the tower w/the custom jewelry drawers and pull out hamper. (this was right after install so not all of the hardware was completed. do to an error they made in measuring the upper shelf,(I specifically told them I wanted to store suitcases on top. they don't fit) I compromised and got free door on these upper shelves. (it was quite an upgrade as these weren't cheap) These pull out drawers are the best thing ever. lingerie, sweaters, and everything in between, get stored in these drawers. I would highly recommend you do a bank of drawers like this. shot before the doors went on. these shelves are for the handbags, so the doors are quite nice. on the sides of these shelf towers, are pull out things for belts and scarves.

Thanks for some of the lovely options posted. The home is already built. So this is the space :) No worries there is lots of windows in the home including master bedroom and bathroom. This is above garage, hence the length. The 6.8" would not be less than 6.5", I shall measure tomorrow and update. Separate storage allocated for shoe closet, personal preference to have shoes setup separate & inside the home shoes are different than outside :). Luggage is probably the only storage planned for basement, more so now than before sadly. Storage needs - Purses, jewelry, cloths all kinds - daily home and work, yoga, tennis, dressy & party etc. I like kayozzy and bpath idea, at the entry to the left have a purse/jewelry narrow closet. Just like kayozzy said, at the bump out there is dressing area planned with sconces ( there is a vanity area in the master bath). Then there is that 8ish feet long deeper section with a window across, how best to use this space - 1) Should this be the dressing table area because of the depth and the window across for natural light... 2) Maybe a deeper under cabinets with counter. if possible some kind of pull out island... Then have upper cabinets come to the counter. 3) Maybe pantry like tall pull outs, I like this but this means it will all be closed. I want to be able to see everything, out of sight out of mind :) Having said this given the narrowness of the space, is it ok to have glass door ( maybe a few mirror doors) or have no doors... Is closed storage a cleaner look... I do like the idea of kayozzy for the 30' long wall to have of lengths of storage closets. I also like bluemarble idea of mirrors and velvet curtains at the windows. Should there be seating with storage at the windows? About material is generally used for closet, wood, UV or some kind of Acrylic (plywood and MDF), anyone has any thoughts on these materials please chime in, would appreciate it.
