Weed-n-Feed 1 Month after 13-13-13?
Comments (6)Do I risk burning my original grass or new sod if I weed-and-feed now (with 27-3-8)after using 13-13-13 only 1 month ago? Uh, yeah! You would be farther ahead to spot spray with Weed-b-Gone. Or, as an alternative to even the spot spraying, there is a tool called a Weed Hound you can get for $20 at any box store. People here give universal praise to that tool. Why do you have dirt if you just sodded?? For long term and permanent weed control, you need to limit your watering to once a week and raise your mowing height. Living in Houston you have absolutely no control over your water, but you do have control over your mower. Raise it up to the highest setting and WELD it in place. If you do not weld it in place, someday you'll give the neighbor kid $15 to mow your lawn and he will "do you a favor" by dropping the mowing height to the lowest setting. Then you will have a yard full of weeds to deal with. But by following this advice with St Augustine, you should never have another weed. Just never let the grass dry out, because it will die. Also, since you live in Houston, if you water your lawn every week all winter, your grass will remain green and never go dormant. Maybe you knew that but you're talking about greening like it was a new thing this time of year. You will have to mow all year, but it's kind of nice to have a green, growing lawn in January....See More15'x13'8" kitchen floor plan suggestions needed!
Comments (20)I also like your 11/17 plan best, Mabel, although I haven't fallen in love with anything yet. You have a good size space, but because of the doorways all layouts have the kitchen scrunched up a bit. It'd be nice to unscrunch it somehow. Certainly no or minimal upper cabinets will help. In any case, I feel pretty sure that I would choose to keep the workspace opened up to the sitting room and breakfast nook so we could just get up and stroll into the kitchen and back. Regarding storage, I did my kitchen without uppers and would do it all over again. FWIW, it seems to me your initial layouts have pretty decent storage space, especially with the pantry there, and a basement or other closet for whatever only gets pulled out 2 or 3 times a year. Just musing. It sounds as if you like your pantry, but, if it's not a shed with a low ceiling, have you considered running the counter right on back into that space, gaining another more than 3 feet for...ovens, refrigerator...? That would definitely unscrunch that side of the room as it would simply keep going back there. I like that most of that corner would still not be on sight. A little mystery is good. Shallow storage could cover the opposite pantry wall. I have had 12" deep wall storage in 2 houses now and really like it. From this side of the screen, I'm liking having the refrigerator in the pantry more and more as I think about it. :). It would create a good work flow clockwise down the counter, with the island no longer a barrier. A negative, of course, would be having it that far from the dining room, but the breakfast area would have a straight line to it without crossing the stove area. Visually, getting the "elephant" out of the room would also be a very nice plus, furthering the open feeling of no uppers. That corner by the sitting room doorway could instead by occupied by a charming built in cabinet, bookcase, antique chest, extra dining chair... The ovens, of course, could go there, with the island to set on. Have you considered setting an extra oven into the island, itself, though, or? My one oven is set under the counter to the left of my stovetop, so the counter above is its landing spot. (Also, this isn't Maine. It's Georgia, and never having to work in front of it is a very good thing.) From another messy cook, talking about a sink on view in a peninsula or wherever, our sink was going just to the right of the main view line down the house. So I chose a single bowl sink 29" long and 9-1/2" deep after verifying that everything from a normal meal can disappear right into it, pots and pans included, with room to spare....See MoreHouse has been wired for two ceiling lights in a 13 x 13 room :(
Comments (45)OP: if you're still undecided, before you do anything or ask your builder to do anything: bring some balloons, painters tape, and string over to the house (and a step ladder.) From the two spots where the current electric boxes are, hang balloons about the same size and distance from the ceiling as lights you might consider, step back, take a picture. Now, same thing but might be a bigger/more blown up balloon (or balloons together), hang from the center of the ceiling as you would a chandelier or other light. Can't find the center of the room easily? Take more string, and tape it crosswise from corner to corner, again corner to corner, to make an X. Where the strings cross is the center of your ceiling. (If my description is confusing see below.) Now hang your balloon 'chandelier', step back, ponder, walk around under it, adjust the string as necessary, take a picture. Here's what I did before hanging a 3 light fixture in my kitchen. I moved my table under it, had a couple of meals there with the kids, and adjusted the strings as necessary. I kept it up for the electrician to see when he hung the new fixture in the spot where the old one was. (the old one is in the background of the picture.) This helped me get exactly what I wanted. :) This method just saved me some time and money for a new fixture in my master bedroom. I had picked out, but not purchased, a new fixture online. I got the dimensions and thought it would be fine as the ceiling in that room is a bit over 10'. I created a mockup based on the dimensions and it was HUGE. I still wasn't convinced so I hung my mockup in the room, and just laughed at the ridiculous look of what I thought I wanted. Found another one that will work much better. :)...See MoreHelp with 13 x 23 foot living room
Comments (22)Another suggestion, but it only works if there are only two people using the room daily. How about getting another recliner and having just two of them facing the tv? When the tv is high up it's easier to watch if you are reclining. You could then slide the sofa down to the middle with the two beige chairs across from it. The table could then be tucked into the corner by the bookcase and bench. I think you'd have to try moving the furniture around. Would you be able to post pictures of anything you try? You have such a great room to work with....See MoreNancy H
