Brand new huge walk in closet!! Help me organize it
Comments (3)Well -- check out The container Store -- and their Elfa collection OR check out California Closet for ideas too! Next -- make lists: How do hang or fold your shirts? How do you hang trousers or pants (double or hanging straight?) How many sweaters do you have? Will this closet handle ALL seasons -- or do you have storage out-of-place for out-of-season wearables? What furniture will you have in the bedroom? (dressers, armoire? a vanity for your jewelery?) What about lighting in the closet? What about having a full-length mirror (and a light?) Do you sit or stand to put on shoes? How many pairs of shoes do you have for each season --- and how do you really like them to be stored??? What about coats and outerwear??? How do store undies? Do you want to be able to dress inside the closet -- or outside in the bedroom OR in the bathroom?? Just a few things to answer that you really help you determine what kinds of infrastructure (Talley Sue's term for shelving, baskets, hanging space etc.) Hope this helps!!!...See MorePlease help me design my narrow 36" wide Pantry/Appliance closet!
Comments (13)Thanks for your responses everyone! I appreciate each and every one. Kippy -- looks like your pantry will be super functional! Unfortunately can't add any more width to our pantry. Stan -- thank you for your input. I think I agree with you on the 8" counter. No can do. Also thanks for your suggestion on the 4" shelves just on one side. That might do the trick! Practigal and Looklake -- the 18" pull-outs sound dreamy, but I really really really want a 36"x24" countertop. Those appliances need to be out of my way. I would leave them out if I used them consistently at least once a week, but there are times when I use them every other day, or not at all for weeks at a time. And Looklake, the size of the pantry is hardly ideal...we are turning a coat closet into a pantry and the size cannot be changed. Karenseb -- when you say pull-outs, do you mean drawers or roll trays? The roll trays would waste more space, right? And any idea what the weight limits might be? Also would it be ok that the pull-outs couldn't fully extend? Since I only have 45" total pantry depth minus the 24" depth of the base cabinet....See MorePlease help me design a new linen/utility closet
Comments (10)leave 1.5 feet at ground-a tote or basket will be pulled OUT to you when you want item so you don't need full 2 feet...medium sized totes are nicer than huge oversized ones from my experience. I'd plan between shelf spacing at 15-18 inches as you will reach IN and organize, place and pull out,etc....need "hand room"- maybe 21 inches at one spot. At the top shelf allow 2 feet to ceiling....rarely used/out of season blankets in storage bags/etc.... very handy so make it bigger....you'll need a stepstool anyway...so allow for substantial storage there. Are you placing fixed positions....can't this be flexible/adjustable shelves....See MoreWalk-in closet design help.
Comments (11)Closet Designer chiming in :) 1) Make sure your contractor has as many clean walls as possible. You need to consider if there is a water access panel or another obstruction. 2) Then consider moving one of the outlets up to 48" H so you can use it has a charging station for your phone, etc 3) Take inventory of your shoes. Most women's shoes are 8" wide so you will need shelving that is multiples of 8 (16" W x, 24" w , 32" W) If a pair of shoes are wider then use that as the number to multiply by (ie 10" wide for a pair) 4) Pick a closet product that has adjustable shelving. Most contractors use a wall cleat system -which means the rod is stuck where it s. 5) Also, have a realistic budget for your closets. Many of my clients are seduced by images they see and show me closets that are 50K + A closet of your size in a Melamine would start around 5K for a system that is hanging and shelving....See MoreElaine Kroeger
