Equivalent of a vanilla bean

I have a couple of recipes that call for a whole vanilla bean. I only have (real) vanilla extract. I looked online for equivalent amounts and found only, "1 inch of vanilla bean = 1 tsp of extract" . Considering most vanilla beans are pretty long, that would mean 6 tsp of vanilla extract in my custard, and that canÂt be right!

Should I figure this out based on the volume of other liquid ingredients? Like in mt recipeÂ2 ½ cups milk, 3 eggs yolks, use 2 tsp vanilla?
