Best Portland, OR decorator fabric store??

I'm joining my husband for a work function in Portland Saturday night and will only have a few shopping hours during the day. I'd like to hit up a decorator fabric store - I'm looking for a great selection and good prices. I'm wanting to change my living and dining window treatments.

I've never been, but I've heard only good things about Fabric Depot...it's over an acre of fabric! It's on the east side, so not sure where you'll be, but it should be easy enough to find. Plus they're having a sale right now.

Bring your wetsuit, it's awfully rainy!

It really wouldn't be Portland without rain, would it?

I looked up fabric stores on Yelp and came up with the Fabric Depot and Mill End Fabrics.

I've also got to make a trek to Ikea and possibly West Elm, which is close to where we will be staying.

What is your best or weakest decorating talent?

My best talent is probably visualizing the potential for change and improvement in a house or room, even if that requires totally changing the look and style of the room. I can look at a traditional room and imagine it contemporary, or vice versa, or imagine changing the functions of a room (living room to dining room, etc.), or moving things like stairs and doors, without being constrained by the room's current state. That skill came in handy since my house looked very tacky and early 80s dated when I bought it; paint, removing wallpaper, and changing the flooring made dramatic differences, and I saw past the prior owners' taste. Other strengths are probably shopping, being comfortable with color, & choosing complementary colors for other rooms, and finding new ways/places to use my old furniture. These days I think i have more weaknesses than strengths. The weaknesses are --- changing my mind mid-project; starting new projects before old ones are done (like some upthread I end up 80% done with a room and then start something else instead of finishing); choosing window treatments. I also tend to get bogged down by perfectionism, which often leads me on 'holy grail' type quests for something very specific that I think would be 'perfect' for my room(s). Of course I then find that nothing like that is sold or if it is it's way beyond my price range, but I refuse to give up, and spin my wheels for months until I get a new 'great idea' to pursue. The other weakness is being a die hard bargain hunter. I've missed out on things, or lost huge amounts of time shopping, because I was determined to find a cheaper version of something. I wish I were more comfortable just spending the money to buy what I want, regardless of sales. I'll never be able to afford everything that I want/admire, unless I hit the lottery. But there are many things that I can afford and pass because they never go on sale and I can't find something similar at homegoods, furniture outlets, etc.

I often go to Calico Corners, which has a local store and is also online. They've got a bigger selection than Joann's but I would guess that if they have identical fabrics, Joann's might be cheaper. Too often I find that Joann's fabrics are several seasons old, but there are some good finds.

UPDATE UGH!!! I am so frustrated! (See more photos below.) First of all, it has been over a week since I placed swatch orders from FashionsFabricClub and Fabric.com and I have not received anything. Very disappointed! So I was getting antsy to find something before the upholsterers come back for the sofa. DH and I drove up to take a look at a new fabric store in the next town. We found what we thought was the perfect green and purchased 12 yards. No returns! Got it home and I realized that not only is it the wrong hue of green to go with my bluish green dining room walls (store lighting can play tricks and it is showing more yellow green at home), but while the fabric has a texture, it's really not large enough to see when far away. So the fabric just looks like a yellow green slab. Boo! I thought about painting the dining rooms walls the same as the rest of the open area - BM Decatur Buff, and then I wouldn't have to worry about matching the blueish green DR walls. And I could have some dimensional things done to the sofa during the reupholstering like a few buttons, double stitched seems, or nailhead trim. These of course would make the sofa look less formal which I am perfectly fine with. However...I then realized that the fabric also looks bad with my Decatur Buff gold/tans walls! And to further realize what a bad choice I made, when leaving the LR and entering the Master, I noticed that my bedroom also has a green theme going on. Green and gold comforter, and a greenish gold bench at the bottom of the bed. I'm an idiot! Now I am seriously thinking of either leaving the sofa the way it is (old and faded salmon), or covering the sofa with the white/cream. Maybe it will not look as bad as I think. The yellow hue does not show up as intense in the below photos. It could be my lighting making the yellow tones, but I need lights! In fact, the color looks more like the mock-up that I used in my first post. Why didn't I notice how yellow that looked against the DR walls! :( Green fabric on sofa looking back toward DR (It's not as close in color as it looks.) Looking towards wingchairs (Looks good with wingchairs.) Against the gold/tan walls (this is the best representation of fabric color, yet when I look at the fabric against the wall, it looks worse.) What's going in the dining room?: Fabric for Host/Hostess Chairs - (Welting to be done in side chair fabric.) Fabric for Side Chairs - (Bad photo, but it's a raw silk look.) Adding the white/cream sofa fabric again to see how it looks with the H/H and dining side chairs. Voting appreciated...Thanks for looking!

Mill End is good, haven't been to Fabric Depot -- but Whole Nine Yards is an institution, delicious and wonderful (until you look at the price tags : )) Maybe go there, see what you like, and then hit the other stores? Have fun!

(note to self: go to Fabric Depot sometime...although maybe I should wait until after I finish up using all the great fabric I have found at GW, which will take a while...)

I have a friend who's daughter lives in Portland, so she's down there quite often. She likes both Fabric Depot & Mill End Fabrics. Enjoy West Elm & Ikea....love visiting Portland!

The Whole Nine Yards is only a few minutes away from West Elm. I have never been, but it's been highly recommended by several people.

Hope you have a wonderful time in our very special city.

I went to both Fabric Depot and Mill End Fabrics. OMG, they are both huge! Unfortunately I didn't find what I was looking for, I have something very specific in mind. I could have spent all day in either store, but my husband was waiting in the car, so I limited myself to an hour in Fabric Depot and a half hour in Mill End. And I didn't stray from the home decor departments!

What is it you're looking for, terri? I do wish that sometime when you come up, we could do get-together. I'd love to meet you. Maybe at the whole 9 yards? : )

I'm looking for a fabric that apparently only exists in my mind. I want a stripe with teal/rust/brown, but not too vibrant. It's one of those "I'll know it when I see it" things. Or, I may just end up tempted by something else entirely! In fact I found some drapes at Ikea that I really liked. I kind of regret not buying a pair.

I'd like to meet you too Fly. Hopefully I'll make it up to Portland again before next January. My DH's company is based there and has an awards dinner every year. It was at the Hotel deLuxe this year, which was very nice. The rooms were small, and I thought of several ways they could have provided more useable space for their guests. ;) Since I had to work on Friday, I flew up Fri night and forced my DH to accompany me to Ikea, West Elm, and the fabric store. My only other visit to Portland this year was an overnight at an airport hotel before I went to Europe.

Sometimes you can find Ikea curtains on eBay...might be worth a check. They have current as well as discontinued there--I see the Stockholms that we *still* haven't put up, for something like 4 years now...where does the time go?! If I come across something in my travels, I'll note it and pass it on.

Maybe come up in June/July for the Rose Test Garden? I actually haven't been there before, but I want to go. I have finally found roses I like (the most intensely fragrant English Roses), so maybe I'm getting an inkling of why rose people like their plants so much. Just an inkling. Not full-blown love, like I have for dahlias (I'm so common :)).

We could do a GW meet up at the garden--that might be enjoyable...?

(p.s. DH's company's awards dinner was at a hotel called the Nines -- evidently we were the biggest event they'd ever hosted!)

The drapes that I liked are also the Stockholm. While they don't have a pure teal or aqua, they do have a grayed out green that I like.

I have seen them on ebay, but they want more for them than buying them at the store!

I could always have my daughter buy them for me in L.A. and send them, or wait until another trip to an area with Ikea.

I think that a Portland GW meet up would be a great idea, and a good excuse for another trip for me.
