iPad vs. a netbook?

I have gone back to school and would love a device to access email, search web & even write papers while I'm waiting for the kids to get out of school. I often have an hour or two to kill while in town waiting for DS.

I am not really a techie person. Just now got an iPod (love the nano for my music and even wear it as a watch!)

My DH says iPad is a big iPod touch (which he has) and that I should carry our mac laptop but it just feels heavy and clunky. I would love your thoughts and experiences.

I love my iPad...the battery life is unbelievable (over 12 hours). I don't use mine for writing other then emails and on message boards, so I suggest you go to the Apple store and play with one and see if the keyboard and app would work for your needs. The keyboard took me awhile to get used to, I know you can buy a 'more normal' one to attach, but that would mean one more thing to carry.

I would love to have an iPad! I know people who have them and they are so portable. Also, since he retired, DH has taken over my MacBook Pro here at home, so I have to lug home my laptop from school every weekend. I hate that! So, I say, go for it.

Then, come back and talk me into going ahead and buying my own iPad! :)

No according to the download link where you select your operating system it only lists windows systems. I know there is however a kindle for pc version for apple products and have heard some that have ipad use it. You would need to look in the app store for ereaders this just came out about what Apple is doing regarding it's policies for ereaders and I am thinking it will not make a lot of people happy Apple's app store policies: What will they provoke?

The xoom will be the one to watch, very nice specs and big competition with what all it can do plus it will be running Android 3.0 Honeycomb. It is an awesome tablet but in the next month or so a lot of awesome Android 3.0 tablets will be hitting the market. Google Android 3.0 and Motorola Xoom: Hands-On, and Awesome The Xoom Club I love my PDN but will seriously be looking at some of these next gen Android tabs, the fact some will be running dual core processors alone will put them heads above the rest. A nice look at some of the other competitors that we can look forward to real soon (including some windows 7 versions). It's Tablet-Palooza at CES 2011

yes that would be the major downside to doing that type of connection it uses the data plan for the phone and therefore the allotted amount of the data plan would have to be pretty large. I have a minimal data plan for my smartphone so unless I upgraded to the max data plan, which would cost quite a bit more, and also paid for the opportunity to use it as a hot spot, I couldn't do it. I checked into the options with att, who is my carrier for my smartphone, and to be able to get the hot spot option you must upgrade to their max data plan which is not unlimited unfortunately but even the ones that claim to be unlimited are not truly unlimited. Amounts to quite a few additional charges. And even though att tries to say that the coverage is great in fact it's not, here at my house in the Houston area, a major coverage area on their map and a 4G area, I barely have 1-2 bars and not 4g. In Galveston it was about the same, in Louisiana it's worse. I don't know how they determine the map coverage information but I donÃ¢ÂÂt agree with it from my experience. I am on the lookout for a better solution for the smartphones and the ability to connect with other technology while traveling.

Oh yeah, if I lived closer to the Apple store, I'd already have one.. and a MacBook air! (Though I am not a fan of the PC store.. OK, so the things that start sucking up space are Movies (HD especially), photos/videos, and certain video intensive games. Other files take up space but text files are pretty darn small. Maybe I sound like a cheapskate, but I can buy (and have) a 1 Terabyte passport for less than the price diff between the 64GB ipad air 2 and the 128GB. Given the low cost of storage, the price diff between the models is ridiculous. I am a very casual gamer. I am not recording music with Garage Band or any of the other music composition apps. Other than scrabble, I might play 1-2 games a year. I won't use the camera extensively and when I do, I won't store photos on the ipad. I think the 64GB will be fine. I actually think the 16GB will be fine but I'll go 64. :) Thanks so much everyone!!

Maddie, yes, they have a cute little carrying case that will place the iPad at an angle with a wireless keyboard.

Cyn....I've heard they are coming out with a new one in April that will have updated screen & camera (not sure what else) and the old ones will be discounted. Does that help?

What Apps do you all use on your iPad, phone,pods?

An Ipad is an electronic "tablet". There are certain computer applications, programs, etc. that you wouldn't be able to do with an Ipad. Don't get me wrong - I like Ipads and have used one - my sister has one and we actually have a few at work. An Ipad may work for what you want to do.

I love my netbook, but I do run some computer programs/applications.

You'll laugh, but the most recent Ap on my iphone is my AAA ap! LOL We've had AAA for years but I forget about where you get discounts. So, when they advertised their ap, i got it. LOL

PS - I read that in the near future there will be some other brands of "tablets" maybe better than the Ipad - maybe not. I believe Samsung is coming out with one. Whatever I was reading said there would be comparable models with lower prices.

Scooby - I'm a late-in-life law student so would like to share my experience. The only thing I really do with a compueter at school is take notes in class, surf the Web, and take care of email. I do my heavy research and writing primarily at home.

Started with a Dell laptop. Great machine, but got heavy with the big books I have to carry to class. Switched to a netbook, which worked just fine - much lighter and just fine for the basics. Last year, DH and I converted everything over to Mac and I now use a 17" MacPro as my desktop computer at home, connected to a 27" monitor. He gave me an iPad for Christmas and I did take that to class and use it for notetaking using an external keyboard and the Pages application, which you can download for $10. It's not as robust as Word, but perfectly acceptable for taking notes. In Pages, you can email your notes to yourself in Word (or even PDF) format, which is very convenient. I believe you can print from it as well, but I'm not sure what's needed to do that.

At this point, I alternate between the two depending on how many books I need to take to school on any given day. Still love my laptop, but when I don't feel like taking it, I pop my iPad in my backpack.

So, the bottom line is that it depends on what you need to do with it. If you're simply taking note and using the Web, and iPad is a lot more fun :) But if you need to use additional applications, you may want to go with a netbook.
