Miele repair blows out..

Just in time for the Christmas baking. The replacement sensors lasted about a month. Turned on the lower oven tonight to 550 and when it got warm we smelled a weird electrical smell. Went to look and the oven was at about 350 and then there was a loud POP and that was that. Nothing...nada...dark.

So I still have a warranty...ovens are almost 5 years old and I have used them hard and have been very very happy with them . I sure am glad I paid $100 for an extended warranty. if you have even thought for one minute that you should skip this cheap extra in your kitchen remodel....don't. You may never need it but if you do you will get it all back in one service charge , nevermind the parts.

Oh no! That really does s**k!!! It's gotten to the point DH and I dread purchasing most things (because of the quality or lack thereof issues).

Oh yeh...this is so awful. I am not going to have any oven for Christmas and if the thing works out like I bet it does I won't be able to bake Balthazar's chocolate bread to take to DS1 and DIL in VA...this sucks...

I double check the amount of oil. On my GX31 engine which is the same engine as yours, I test and put a mark on the bottle. The bottle is a 3.2oz bottle. I actually went to OSH today and look at where they fill 3.2oz and the mark I made to fill to the right level is no where close to the original level of the 3.2 oz. You better put the engine FLAT horizontal and fill oil until the level reach the top thread without over flow....Just touch the top thread only. From my guess, it is only like 2.8 to 2.9 oz to the required level. 0.2 oz is a lot if it is overfilled. My engine always burn clean and no excess oil in the air filter.

While I would not describe myself as "pro lawn" I have nothing against lawn if one goes about it in the right way. I use a mix of lawn and flower beds in my garden. I like the look. I think lawn can tie the landscape together nicely. It gives visual relief between flowers. Lawn makes a good path. A little lawn also helps to tie the garden to the surrounding neighborhood, which is mostly lawn. And if you use the "Freedom Lawn" approach, lawn is environmentally friendly too. The lawn in the pictures below has not been fertilized or irrigated or sprayed or otherwise treated in over five years. I don't rake up the clippings. I don't even bother raking leaves. Because I mow high the leaves and clippings work their way down into the turf and eventually feed the grass. Yes, if you look up close, there are weeds, and several types of grasses mixed up, though it's mainly bahia. But from a distance, it looks neat, neat enough for me anyhow. Having a blend of grasses and weeds prevents bare patches. If one thing dies, another fills in. The trick to the "freedom lawn" approach is mowing. You want to mow frequently, every four days or so during a rainy summer. You want to set the mower as high as possible, at least 4 inches. You want to keep your blade sharp. You want to edge. Yes, it's a lot of work, but no more than most parts of my garden require, and a lot less than some. (And my garden has lots of native and Florida friendly plants). In your place, if I wanted to keep some lawn, I would overseed with bahia (Argentine is best for most of Florida). Follow the instructions on the bag or bucket. Give it one feeding to help it get established, and keep it mowed. Now's a good time to do it, with all the rain. I wouldn't bother with much weeding. I'd tear out only the biggest and ugliest ones and mow the rest. I would replace the lawn in areas that don't get enough sun, or where it's difficult to mow, or where foot traffic is just too heavy, or where you just want something else. I would avoid tearing out or smothering huge areas of lawn at once, which can be overwhelming. "> "> Bill

What awful timing!! I'm so sorry. I remember that first Thanksgiving thinking, finally two ovens = nope, had to replace the electric board. No problem, I'll have two ovens for Christmas = nope, had to replace/realign the convection fan - sounded like a machine gun in the kitchen. I wish I 'd had the sense to buy the extended warranty, but with the double ovens, DW, and frige/freezer - it was a lot of money. You are right in that you make it back lickety-split if you have a service call.

weed: nope need to be able to bake at 500/460 for most of my artisan breads. I will see what they say and then plan from there. I have a convection/microwave that is from the 70's. It was Momma's. I have never used the convec in it. I may give it a whirl and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestion !!!

lucy: at $100 per appliance it was so cheap compared to one service call and the total cost of the remodel that I was not going to skip the 4 major appliances. I am sorry you had probs and hope that everything keeps working now for you .

well, the miele extended warranty was well over 100 per appliance, DW -$249, Double ovens $349, Frig $399, Freezer $399 - still, if you need it, it is worth it-
At any rate, I'm GLAD you have the warranty - and will get it fixed, hopefully very soon so you can post some more GREAT recipes!! Merry Christmas and thanks for all your helpful posts this past year.

trailrunner- getting a service agreement at that price was a no-brainer. I'm amazed that it was so cheap. Did you purchase it from Miele or from an appliance store?

Even though I know almost everyone recommends against buying an agreement - I almost always do. GE replaced a $1500 Profile refrigerator and a trash compactor under the extended warranties I purchased. Dacor offered to either buy back my Epicure double wall oven or replace it with a new Millenium double wall oven (which was $2000 more than I paid for the Epicure) due to excessive condensation between the glass.

I know it's a gamble but I like the piece of mind. But it seems like the prices on the agreements have shot way up.

mcmann: I got them from my appliance company. They are certified Miele dealers and techs. I don't know how they do this as far as price but I suspect that over the years they have been able to do it cause most appliances didn't break all that often in the time frame they offered the warranty. Now that appliances appear to not be made as well as they used to be and replacement parts are no longer made well I would be surprised if they offered the warranties at that price.

Lucy:I never called Miele or Bosch or Frigidaire as indep. sellers and bought warranties from them....if I had I am sure that I would have had to pay way more...although with one visit as I pointed out you are already ahead. I have a 3rd party warranty and until now it has been perfect. We will get it all worked out. My appliance people have called back and they are coming no matter what the warranty folks are saying and they will fix it free of charge so I am happy. I love my appliance folks. That is what you get from people that have been in business for years and years and years...3rd generation runs it now. They do care. c
