Help me with a dinner party theme?!

We are in a "dinner club" with 6 other couples -- we have gotten together for dinner about every 2 months for the past 8 years! It's at a different couple's house each time, and the host makes the main course while the others bring side dish, salad, dessert, etc. We always have a theme, and as you can imagine, after all these years it's getting harder to find new ones.

We're hosting at the end of this month. I was thinking of an "Apre Ski" theme -- thinking it could be interpreted in a number of ways, from just wearing jeans and fuzzy sweaters to showing up on crutches -- but I think it's been done already. Other themes we've had have been different countries/cuisines, Halloween costume parties, games night (Pictionary, Scattergories, etc), kids' birthday party (one of the most fun ones -- we played kiddie party games), 1960s, disco, etc.

Any new ideas for me?

I've never been to, but have heard Murder Mystery Dinners can be fun.

My favorite hosts, Frasier and his brother Niles have had "your favorite literary figure" and "your favorite hero" themed parties. Both went terribly wrong...but had great potentional

If I were giving a theme party, I would choose a Great Gatsby theme. I love that era and that movie.

I did a quick google search and there are many sites that give party ideas, including food, costume, games, etc.

How about everyone coming as their favorite artwork? Folks could either dress as a character from a painting or as a statue or something. Your parties must be a lot of fun!

Stacy, this chicken dish is really good and is only about 30 minutes from start to serve. You could serve it over rice or orzo that you prepare in advance and just warm up. Creamy Tarragon Chicken From Fresh Market-Grand Rapids, MI 4 boneless, chicken breast halves Salt & pepper to taste 3T all purpose flour 2T olive oil 1T onion, finely chopped 1/4 c white Bordeaux wine (you could use any white wine) 1T fresh tarragon, chopped 1/4 c chicken broth 3T butter 1/4 c heavy cream Season the chicken breasts with salt & pepper, dredge in flour. Set aside chicken and remaining flour. In large sauté pan, heat olive oil over mediumh igh heat. Brown the chicken 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown. Set aside and keep warm. Add onion to pan and cook 1 minute. Pour wine into pan and increase heat to high. Deglaze pan by cooking until almost all the liquid has evaporated, stirring to loosen browned bits on bottom of pan. Reduce heat to medium low and add reserved flour, stirring to form a thick roux. Stir in tarragon and broth. Return chicken to pan and cook until chicken is cooked through and juices run clear, about 10 minutes. Remove chicken to plates, add butter and cram to pan and heat through. Spoon sauce over chicken and serve. Joe's Seafood lasagne is rich, and super elegant. You can use any combination of seafood you like, really, and it can be made ahead. WHITE WINE SEAFOOD LASAGNA Makes 6 good portions; 8 for the smaller ones 2 pounds bay scallops 1/3 cup butter 1 cup green onion \-\- chopped 1 clove garlic \-\- minced 1/4 teaspoon thyme \-\- dried 1/3 cup all\-purpose flour 1 cup chicken broth \-\- regular strength 1 cup whipping cream 1/2 cup dry white wine 8 ounces lasagna noodles 1/2 pound crab meat \-\- cooked, shredded 1/2 pound swiss cheese \-\- shredded Rinse scallops well and drain; if using regular scallops, cut into 1/2\-inch pieces. Melt 1 tablespoon of the butter in a 12\- to 14\-inch frying pan. Add onion, garlic, and thyme; stir on medium\-high heat for 1 minute. Add scallops and cook, stirring often, until they are opaque in the center (cut to test), 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from heat and pour scallops into a large strainer positioned over a bowl; let drain 20 to 30 minutes. In the same frying pan, melt remaining butter on medium heat. Add flour and stir until it turns a light golden color. Remove from heat and smoothly mix in broth, cream, and wine. Return to high heat and bring to a boil, stirring. Set aside. Fill a 4 to 5\-quart pan 3/4 full with water and bring to boiling over high heat. Add lasagna noodles and boil, uncovered, until tender to bite, about 10 minutes; drain. Rinse lasagna with cold water until cool; drain again and set aside. Pour scallop juices into a 1\- to 1\-1/2\-quart pan and boil on high heat, uncovered, until reduced to about 2 tablespoons; stir near the end to keep juices from scorching. Mix juices and crab meat with cream sauce. Line the bottom of a 9\- by 12\-inch buttered baking pan or dish with 1/3 of the lasagna noodles. Spread noodles with 1/3 of the sauce, top with 1/3 of the scallops, then with 1/3 of the cheese. Repeat layers twice more, ending with cheese on top. Cover pan with a lid or foil; if made ahead, chill up to one day, then bring to room temperature. Bake lasagna in a 350 F oven for 20 minutes. Remove foil and bake until cheese is golden, about 20 minutes longer. Let stand 15 minutes before cutting; lift out portions with a wide spatula. Makes 12 servings as a first course, 6 as an entree. In New Jersey we had pizza parlors in the very late 40's. It was called Pizza pie. When I started dating my DH to be ( he was from Iowa and I from NJ and we were dating in Mass.)he had just returned from being stationed in California....and was fascinated with the Trader Vic and other Hawiian restraunts.... In the east we didn't know anything about rum drinks with umbrellas and Pupu platters....we were too busy drinking Martinis and Manhattens (and some drank 7 and 7 blech!) and talking through our teeth, to care about what happened on the west coast.LOL! And Cheri rumaki was "exotic"....cutting edge in the late 50s'! LOL! When my parents would have a party, the only "mixer" that friends used was seltzer ( in a syphon!) and ginger ale! And no wine, no beer...just booze! When we had parties in the early years...it was BYOB! LOL! When we finally got out of the just married/poor category, we did like out parents....M and M parties and "highballs". I can't remember when we started to serve wine as a before dinner drink. For a lot of years it was only served with dinner....at least in our crowd....at least until mid 80s'. Linda C...walking down memory lane... How strict is your "strict budget"? Have you already planned to provide entertainment for the evening, whether with music or a performance of some sort? Part of my job entails event planning, and we've found that our casino nights always go over very well. There are companies that will come in and "run the show" for you, setting up their tables, providing dealers that engage with your guests, conducting the prize/raffle drawings after cash out if desired. I'm not a gambler myself, but it never fails to make me smile to see all of our folks gathered 'round the tables enjoying themselves at the games. We often request that the dealers wear casual western clothing, which makes it easy to theme the rest of our event in that direction (BBQ "chuckwagon" dinner, sunflowers in Mason jars for centerpieces along with little bales of hay and red-checkered table linens). The casino companies tend to be very affordable for all that you get. Lots of bang for the buck. Our most recent event was themed as an indoor "backyard BBQ", and we turned a hotel ballroom into a "backyard" with outdoor party lights strung up, lounge-seating areas with old-fashioned webbed lawn chairs and ice chests as tables. We brought in games like horseshoes and cornhole toss. We worked with a company that set up table rounds as well as picnic tables, which was a lot of fun. Of course, when you hire a company to handle your décor you do run into considerable expense, but this could definitely be duplicated on a smaller budget I'd think. We've also done a roaring 20s theme, disco night (a total blast! Everyone dressed the part and we had an amazing band playing all the old songs that people danced to), a luau (our décor company brought in so many gorgeous live flowers, but I shudder to think what all of that cost us), and we may go with an 80s theme for an upcoming event.

Post dinner report! The gathering was changed to a sit down dinner for 10 women who were the core of the "Midterm Squad". I stayed in the kitchen while Z plated and served and bused. ("Z" is our interim housemate. He is Dear Daughter's friend from high school and college roommate, finishing the fifth year of his degree program in Portland and living with us. The backstory is that SWMBO and I are not coping well with imminent empty-nesterhood, so it was either have Z live with us or get a dog, and our cat had the tie-breaking vote.) Dinner started with a beet, blue cheese, arugula salad. Dressing was rice vinegar, shallots, poppy seed, mustard. Soup was clear mushroom soup. I say "clear" not to suggest it was transparent as water, but to distinguish it from creamy mushroom soups. I used a lot of mushrooms to make mushroom stock, then discarded those mushrooms and made the soup with brown and shiitake mushrooms, a bit of this and that, serve with a bit of green, a sprinkle of cheese, some fried enoki mushrooms. SWMBO insists on adding a dollop of sour cream. The meat eaters had beef bourguignon. Just the standard recipe. I include half a pound of bacon strips and much more wine than typical. When the meat is cooked, I fish out and discard the bacon, drain off the liquid and reduce it to a sauce. This was garnished with pearl onions, crisp bacon, and blueberries. For the pescatarian, yes this is the cute one mentioned in the Steamed Fish thread, we steamed a whole sea perch, head and tail. I prepared this exactly as suggested in the other thread and it was so popular that the meat eaters helped finish it. The fish market had blue crab, but I didn't see that until after the fish had been, err, harvested. There were purple carrots braised in beer and butter, then slightly caramelized. Also pureed cauliflower with plenty of brie cheese, heavy cream and butter. Wilted grapes with balsamic vinegar, served on baguette slices broiled with gorgonzola cheese. Dessert was three gelatos. There was a blueberry gelato, that was good but next time I'll add lemon juice to brighten. A hazelnut and chocolate - ahem, Nutella - gelato, that was about as excellent as anything made from Nutella always is. And a blue cheese gelato that was so interesting and good that I'm doing a brie cheese-based gelato for Thanksgiving. Alas, the blued cabbage failed because I let it boil dry and charcoalize. Arrgh. All in all, the dinner had only a modest blue theme but the Nasty Women Who Get Sh*t Done loved it anyway. The four bottles of wine that ten ladies went through was no doubt a factor. This was the first real test for my new dishwasher and it promises to be a paradigm changer for my kitchen. I kept one side of the sink full of hot soapy water and every mixing bowl, utensil, glass, pot, etc went in there as soon as I finished using it, then periodically everything in that sink went into the dishwasher, the "WASH" button was pressed, and 3 minutes later it was all clean, sanitized, and soon thereafter dry. When dirty dishes and glasses started coming back from the dining room, they were simply rinsed off, loaded in the dishwasher, and in 3 minutes they were clean, dry, and stacked. Amazing! There was a small tragedy. I dropped and shattered FOUR dinner plates from our wedding china set. Until now, we've not broken a single piece in 25 years of marriage. Replacements.com wants $140 per plate! But last night I found a set of four dinner plates from this pattern on eBay for $125 - and hit the Buy It Now button about half a second later. Thank you everyone for helping me put on this celebration dinner for "the Nasties".

How about a Las Vegas theme? Guests could dress as their favorite Vegas entertainers. And you could play Black Jack, Roulette...things like that. And if you specified headline singers or comedians, you could have a microphone so you could sing or have a comedy routine presented by each guest.

Or a musical dinner where every couple must make up a song about the dish they bring. Sung to a familiar tune, each couple must serve their own dish while singing their song.

I was thinking of bingo night, dressing crazy with nails painted to read bingo on each hand or eye shadow that says bingo. The guys can make Bingo hats, shirts or belts etc. that say things like "Bingo Man" with felt tip pens, etc.

Each card costs a dime and the winner keeps all, ending the night with blackout, where the cards cost a quarter.

Sounds like fun! I have never been to a theme party other than Halloween.

Or Chinese New Year, which is February, 28. It's the Year of the Tiger. Each guest can dress like their zodiac animal, and personality profiles and horoscopes can be given for each guest. Party favors can include fortune cookies presented in "take-out" style containers. If you & your friends like Chinese food, & haven't had the chance to eat it together as a group, this could be a most auspicious time to do so!

Or pick an era. say the 80s. Have everyone come in their fav 80s look or whatever era you pick 60s is fun and easy.

Choose a favorite film, or film series - Gone with the Wind, 2001, The Devil Wears Prada, Star Wars, James Bond, The Godfather, Lord of the Rings, etc.

Or a favorite tv show - The Simpsons, The Jetsons, The Flinstones, Friends, Cheers, Lost, etc.

Thanks for all the great ideas! I'm going to save them all for future reference. I talked to a couple of friends who are in the group, and they reminded me that we're doing this on a Fri. night instead of Sat. (usually it's Sat.) so the 'theme' needs to be pretty simple -- it's just harder on a Fri. night. So we're sticking with the Apres Ski idea (realized we actually have not done it before).

Oh! Don't you think a cheese fondue dinner would be fun for your theme? Fondue's history lands squarely on ski slopes.

golddust, funny you mentioned that -- one of the guests is bringing fondue for dessert! Main course will be chili two ways -- one meat, one vegetarian. Someone else is making cornbread... etc.

For my apres-ski outfit, I'm thinking I'll have my arm in a sling or a big bandage on my head. ;)

Remember 'white parties' in the '80s? They can be fun again. Everyone owns quite a number of white clothing pieces that they can put together in an outfit.

Serve punch made with tonic so that it glows. Serve creative glowing drinks. Jello can glow too.

Use some Depression glass or Vaseline glass serving pieces that glow if you can.
