Have You Seen Amour (The Movie)?

DH and I went to see it last night. It completed our seeing all of the Oscar nominees for Best Picture. It was really hard for me to watch given the fact that I have elderly parents with multiple health challenges. I was teary through much of the film.

The acting is superb. It is a French film with subtitles, set in Paris. I absolutely loved the apartment of the couple in the film with the exception of the kitchen.

Have you seen it? Thoughts?

No, haven't seen it, but it is on my list and has been since it came out! Glad to hear you liked it.

No, and I absolutely do not want to see it. Too sad. I saw a some clips of it this morning on television and could barely stand to see even that. I'm sure it is a fine movie, but I plan to skip it.

We just saw The Queen. I think we're about done with the Oscars although we might still see Notes on a Scandel and both Little Miss Sunshine and Water are coming from Netflix. The Queen had very good acting but I didn't think the story was that interesting. But I've always considered royalty to be rather useless and expensive so I didn't care that much about the queen or her struggles. Diane described Pan's Labyrinth quite well. It is mostly a war story with some fantasy elements. The grisly part is mostly the fights between the army and the rebels which does include the aftermath of the torture of one of the rebels (although thankfully it does not show the actual torture). I feel sorry for my mother right now. She likes to watch the movies on our top ten lists for the year but she hates violence. And pretty much the only non-violent movie on my top ten is Shortbus which has a lot of graphic sex. So I can't exactly recommend that one to her either. I think she'd really like Volver though and all the violence in that is off-screen so I think that one is okay at least.

I finally saw it, late last night. I felt a knot in my gut get tighter and tighter as the scenes passed and the drama of desperation accumulated. But other than that, the movie did not cause any intense or unusual emotional disturbance in me. I thought it was exceptionally, commendably well done. DW even went with me, and for once, we both came through about identically, emotionally. DW was offended because it seemed to her like the military characters were singled out for put-downs. It looked to her like there was an imbalance of portrayal of the military folks, compared to the other responders, as the least intelligent, most disorganized and otherwise most inept. I didn't take it that way, although I understand why she would. But really, the attacks were not something anyone was well-rehearsed in responding to. (Who's all set to execute plans to respond to an earthquake in Chicago? Or a bee swarm in a shopping mall, for that matter?) There probably would have been unnecessary shootdowns if the President's orders had been passed. That's the kind of thing that happens simply because of the "fog of war," absent any blood lust, overreaction, or insubordination. I thought the commanders' declining to pass the shootdown orders was as brave and admirable an action as the passengers' revolt. I guess I brought that up because I'm familiar with air-to-air scenarios. For irony in personal experience, just this past week I watched The Godfather Part III on DVD. Weird movie, but I suppose it was a way to bring some kind of closure to the first two parts. Anyway, one very good line in it was: "Don't hate your enemies; it clouds your judgment." I think United 93's most clever quality was its portrayal in a way that did not strive to focus viewers' empathy toward either hijackers, or passengers, or other responders, or other less involved characters. Portrayal with any hint of "partisanship" would have disserved the public and cheapened the movie. The media are already far too full of historical portrayals that stoke already existing hatreds (and create new ones), such that too many people are fighting the war we are in with clouded judgment. It's one thing for combatants to adopt, or reject, one another's strategies, tactics, methods, ideas or styles. But it's self-defeating to the warrior who lets propaganda affect how he "feels about" his enemy. I ached after the movie, not because of it, but because there aren't more like it, especially covering the current war.

Still with furs. I lived for a year in Canada (Ottawa) a cold country and very chilly city and someone gave me their very old fur coat. It was extremely heavy and rather moth eaten, probably less mouton and more dead cat. One day I walked into the city library and, though it was snowing as I left home, it was raining by the time I got there . . . and my goodness did that soggy coat pong. All eyes and noses followed me round the shelves until, in sheer embarrassment, I had to take it off and hide it behind a distant radiator where it steamed-off noxious vapours. When I returned to the UK the coat stayed behind. BTW Queen Elizabeth, was never Princess of Wales, just Duchess of York, as George VI went straight from D of Y to King. When Diana became Princess of Wales it was noted that the title hadn't been used since the time of the marriage of George V in 1890 something to Mary of Teck, always know as Old Queen Mary when I was a child. Also a fact I only became aware of recently, the title of Queen Mother was specially created for Queen Elizabeth on the death of George VI . . . probably much more than you (true US republicans all) needed to know. ;-)

wanted to see that movie this past weekend, but it was already out of the theatre except for a matinee show... making room for the new releases I guess. will have to go further to a 24theatre to see it... it's rated pg, so appropriate for kids. the boy in the movie is young- looks to be preteenish. It is amazing what animals can be taught to do-- makes me think about becoming a professional animal trainer! you can check out some of the video online which shows the trainer working a little bit with 'max'...

Yes, we saw it. I thought it was very well done and agree with your comments. The acting was superb. I thought the the costuming was very nicely done too. Their clothes were perfect.

The apartment was wonderful and the kitchen struck me as well. It reminded me of my grandparents place in their final years. Then I remembered that old charming buildings just don't always have old charming kitchens. Two DSs live in NYC in pre-war apts in great old buildings with kitchens that don't have the charm and character of the rest of the space. Seems the bathroom was kind of like that in the movie as well, though old bathrooms sometimes have old charming tile even if the tub is shot and lighting terrible.

Though hardly an uplifting film, I was glad to have seen it and felt it compelling. I didn't tear up watching it, but was "spent" at the end. We all have our time and the road out of here may not be exactly what we or our loved ones would choose.

Amour has the oldest actress nominated. Did you see the film with the youngest? Beasts of the Southern Wild. Any thoughts on that one? I have seen it as well.

Have you seen The Master? I need to get to Life of Pi and Django.......

Texanjana, good for you! I didn't get a chance to go see Amour when it finally opened here in Miami this weekend. Am planning to go soon, maybe this weekend. I still need to see Beasts of the Southern Wild and then I'll have watched all of the nominated Best Pictures.

Other than The Master, Flight and The Impossible I've seen all the movies from which the nominations for acting came. This year I made that a fun goal/project and have enjoyed seeing so many movies over the past month or so.

To know that the couple are Trintignant and Riva is enough to make me feel like I'm fixin' to die. I remember Trintignant from when he was much younger. We all have our turn on this ride and everyone's in the process of getting on or getting off.

These thoughts may be affected by the fact that a dear friend and colleague died suddenly at 56 on Sunday. He was there and then he was gone. I have an email from him from what turned out to be about 4 hours before he died. I was supposed to meet with him Sunday afternoon. But no. It's like Sirius Black dying, just becomes a wisp of smoke and disappears. I don't know which is worse (or kinder)--to watch gradual decline of someone you love or to be plucked out of your daily routine and pulled from the game forever with almost no warning.

I haven't seen The Impossible or Flight, but have seen all the other films.

I think confronting our own (or a loved one's) mortality is challenging, and that is what Amour made me do.

Fly-So sorry for the sudden loss of your friend. I don't think one death is easier or kinder (sudden or gradual), they are just different and both are difficult.

Thanks, mitch and jana. I know that there's no comparing deaths...which even more makes the point that we're all just little ants. The ant line comes from my daughter, actually -- (ants are ubiquitous in the PNW) she said that she wonders what ants think, if anything, in the moment before we squash them (yeah, we squash them...I'm sorry) in that I keep wondering what John was thinking in that split-second when he realized that he wasn't going to be able finally to bring to fruition all the great things he was just on the cusp of accomplishing for the K-12 students of Oregon, and I can really believe that those were part of his last thoughts, along with thoughts about his family...but all that doesn't matter, fades away when it comes down to elementals such as are the subject of this film.

Jana, it must have been both devastating and comforting to see "Amour"; I've seen only trailers and it seemed to me that they pull no punches. I'm not sure I could stand an entire feature-length version. Unless I were to take moments to focus on the decor like you did, as a good HD board member : )!

I sneaked out from decluttering to see Amour today. As others have said, it was an excellent movie about a tremendously sad and difficult part of life. The performances were wonderful although the topic and plot are so sad.

With that said, I am such a horribly shallow person that I kept ogling that incredible Paris apartment and thinking (no spoilers here) the daughter was going to be one rich lady when she sold it...and that someone was going to fix it up to be a show place.
