Are curtains decorations? lol curtains from sheets

Four family Dollar sheet sets..$38 bucks...to cover 3 double window sets and a set of french doors. Way cheaper than buying ready-made curtains. If you can sew a straight line, you can do this...heck you don't even have to sew! Use those clip on drapery pole rings...I'm happy with them.

kudzukween, they are beautiful!!! They go so well with your paint color which I love. Actually, I do sew and have made many of my own curtains and valances, but never anything like this. I'm curious as to how you did the valance part. I've seen these and have wondered how they are done, but I'm afraid of trying it.

Thanks so much Donna :) I made 4 small valances, which are just a strip of sheet cut about 30" long(however long you want it, it will just hang down lower) I made a casing on the top and bottom of each strip and hung the top and bottom on the curtain rod and moved them really close together. This made the center-middle of the strip gather up. Then I pulled that gather out and pinned it to the top.......cheating, easy, but effective! lol...it was supposed to be Waterfall valances, if you look those up, you'll see how to make them, but I didn't measure right.

Hello! This is awesome information, thank you all so much!! ttodd - so you used fabric glue instead of sewing? Was it messy? Do you think it will hold over time? I was thinking of sewing it as I have never used the glue. charlieinnj - wow! That looks great! I'd like to try this as well. Sleek/comtempory...yes this is exactly what I am going for. Yes, the quilt wall hanging may not work! LOL! I'll have to break that to dh. Ok, about the fabric repeating exactly...I wonder if one 84" or 96" curtain panel will be enough fabric to accomplish this? This is a curtain panel that I found, not fabric. blondepegasus - yes, I will have the yellow ribbon on the curtains, the yellow in the fabric wall hangings, yellow pillows on the chair. I should probably just scratch the idea unless I stumble across nice looking sheets for a great price. I agree if the fabric is thin it isn't going to look nice. I considered fabric but it sounded like less work somehow just using sheets. I guess it's not really. Terriks those curtains from Ikea would be perfect and more what I would rather spend. I sooo wish Ikea would mail their curtains. I'd probably use them for everything. For the gas it would cost me to drive to a store, I should just buy the JCP ones. Well making curtains was a short lived thought! :)

Depends upon the room: the shape of the room and the size of the windows, the need for privacy, the need for sun control, budget, and personal preference. My own plans: Plantation shutters and drapes in the dining room and all bedrooms. I love plantation shutters, and they're so practical. This'll also give a consistent look across the front of the house. However, I think the drapes are also necessary to make them look "finished"; the drapes will be just for show -- maybe even on dummy rods. I'm using long drapes (on ceiling tracks) over the sliders in the great room. They're "softer" than the shutters and more fitting for the look I want in that room. Cheaper too. This room will face the back yard, so privacy won't be a big issue, but sun control will be needed. In the bay breakfast nook I'll use white fluttery curtains. Since this faces the back yard, privacy isn't an issue, and I like this look in a breakfast nook. White fluttery curtains over the washer/dryer in the utility room too. What I WON'T have again is mini-blinds. Hate them. They never work well and are always dusty (maybe that's because I have dark wood mini-blinds).

UPDATE: Thank you, everyone, for all your help!! I mostly went shopping in my house, and changed things up a bit: 1. moved in blue-ish rug from desk area; got rid of ugly beige ombre rug 2. moved in dining room chair I wasn't using anyway; it's not awesome but it's better than the folding chair ;) and my mom made the quilt when I was a teenager, so... 3. moved in blue blanket from den 4. framed/hung watercolors my MIL gave me for Christmas -- not exactly what had been envisioning, but I love them and they are free ;) 5. new: big monstera plant from Trader Joe's of all places; it surprisingly seems pretty happy here 6. new: blue and white duvet cover (Overstock); blue bedskirt (Macy's); blue geometric pillow (HomeGoods) Eventually it would be nice to add an upholstered bench under the pics, and get bigger bedside tables + lamps -- but I don't want to spend the $$ on that right now. Overall, I'm happy with the room, and appreciated all the suggestions!

Beautiful job! I have a cool junk store that sells curtain panels some very lg sizes, I covered a old door that was cut to make a head board with one panel used the other to make 2 valances to match, supper cheap $5

Thanks so much ya'll :) I haven't gotten back to sewing yet, maybe tomorrow. I was too tired after being in the heat yesterday and packing and unpacking, and today is Lazy Day..pretty much, anyway,lol.
If I make curtains in this room again, I will probably go with long tablecloths for curtain panels, and matching place mats cut in half for the valances, that's even less work.
For the french doors, it's just plain sheet panels with no header.
These valances are what I intended to make, but I sewed them all the same, like a short curtain with a casing on top and bottom. What I did was pull the center out, fluff it, and pin it to the top of the rod,lol!

Very nice!

I used chocolate brown flat sheets in my DD's room. She has tan walls with silver accents. I found silver drapery rods and we used the clips/rings to hang the sheets. I used two sheets per window. They look great!
