A whole new attitude toward snow!!

Last night a friend stopped over with a treat, because I had missed the party where he served it. Actually not too manyw ere there as it was a howling blizzard and some of those who did go ended up spending the night.

Anyhow he brought me a container of pineapple, coconut snow icecream....OMG....heaven!

He's going to send me the official recipe....but as he told me, you get a pineapple and core it and put the fruit into a food processor, add about a cup of flaked coconut and some ( forget how much) sugar and blend until smooth....strain in case there is any bits of stuff.

Then chill and put into a metal bowl and add a pint of whipping cream and a pint of half and half and go outside and get some fresh white clean snow and stir and keep adding snow...stirring like mad until it gets like softserve ice cream....and OMG!!

I am sure there are many recipes....I remember hearing about a friend when I was a kid who said his mom just added vanilla and sugar to snow...

I have never made snow icecream....but you can bet the next time we have snow predicted I will stock up on cream and try it.

Anyone else very make snow icecream?

Even in not-so-frigid North Carolina we would make "snowcream" - that's what it was called when I was growing up. Yep, just take a metal bowl outside, brush off the top layer of fresh snow (avoiding any 'yellow' snow - LOL!), scoop the snow into the bowl, take inside and add vanilla and sugar to taste, eat it up.

Never heard of it, but it sounds like fun! And something to do when it's too darn cold to do anything else!

If you keep a customer happy, word gets out. Make them mad, that gets out too. :) Simple as that! Regardless of how big or small their needs. My dad owned a Auto repair shop from 1983-2005. I can't tell you how many times someone came in for a small quick fix. Wiper blades and such. Many a time he'd fix it quick and not charge. They'd leave happy and tell a friend who needed major work. He never advertised anywhere, and had more work than he could handle till the day he sold it. The clerk should have helped retiredprof. by offering why he felt the customer should go with a bagged mix and let the customer decide. Simple. Like Al stated.. start asking why. I love to play that game. Espicially if they had a snotty attitude! he he. Jodi~ your so right in the fact that they know nothing about their jobs! Worse yet, they don't care!! Some time back we asked a clerk at HD if they had bird house kits for children to build and paint. The clerk took us to what he thought it was. The item he pointed out was the boards to put in the eves of the house to keep birds out! Scary!! ""There's a lot to be said for quality... versus quantity. If a soil lasts for a few seasons, then it's less expensive in the long run than the soil that requires replacing on a regular basis. I'd like a medium to last for more than a few months, before it decomposes and compacts to the point that it's no longer healthy for plant roots, and they're suffocating in it."" So true Jodi~ Espicially in an are like mine! Our growing season is about 9 or 10 months long for annuals and simple stuff. Bagged mixes just don't hold up~ Not to mention the cost of stuff I have to throw away that didn't make it! This season I showed my mom and a friend how great my plants are doing, using Al's mixes. And next spring the garden centers will have 2 less people buying the bagged mixes. :) What can I say.. were several of the many who are tired of throwing away $$! JoJo

Love - You said "He said fine, he would have to leave work early, didn't want to "inconvenience me" yada yada." and "I asked him what made him say that and he just said "well, I can't leave work early today." WOW. So I guess in his MAN MIND that is his way of acknowleding that I wouldn't do it." The way I see it is this was his way of making you feel guilty for being a SAHM, but unwilling to help him out with his kid. Don't give in!!!! Be strong in that HE needs to do what HE needs to do for HIS kid, and it wouldn't have to be this way if the (in the words of Sweeby) bat-sh*t crazy b*tch hadn't come in your home and punched you. Pseudo said "....I guess my point was if he puts BM before you ... if you had a child with him where would he draw the line ...." This is totally what I have been thinking for a few months now, but could never get the courage up to say anything. Where will he draw the line? Your DD has already been subjected to so much from this woman, and he's not even her father! How much would he put a child of his own through? Example: my friend has a DD with her DH who has 2 DDs with a crazy BM. The DH is a SAHD to the little one (DD with my friend) and would take her with him to pick up the other DDs on his weekend. It became a habit that the BM wouldn't be home at p/u time and wouldn't answer her phone. He would wait around for them to return (afraid that if he left he wouldn't get to see his DDs). One time, the little DD was in the car and carseat for 4 hours while he tried to track them down and waited for them. 4 hours! My friend finally said "You can wait around for 4 hours if you want, but you will not have MY daughter sitting in a carseat for 4 hours while you sit in your car outside their home." Basically, he had no problems putting BM ahead of his new DD. Remember...the squeaky wheel gets the grease. You just have to start squeaking louder than her. Jupiter said "I think that they need to see their ex's as good mothers (even when they clearly are not) maybe to somehow reassure themselves for when they are with her." So, so, so, true. My DH knows BM is a back-stabbing liar. But then he says stuff like "well, BM says it's SD's decision and she asks her all the time if she wants to visit". So why would he believe that one statement when he's caught her in so may lies before? The only thing that makes sense is he NEEDS to believe she's a good mother. Jupiter also said "I too run into arguments where he lets her slide on things that he wouldn't with me..I try to give him the example that if it was anyone else in his life he would have told them to go to h#$% because normally in life you don't do favors for people who don't do for you let alone someone who puts him down as a father..." and Love said "But it just totally goes against DH's overall nature, which is so frustrating." This is the issue. Which personality is the REAL one? I have this same problem with DH and I'm starting to think the way he is with HER is his personality when he's vulnerable and that scares the crap out of me because I guess I rarely ever see him vulnerable. I agree with FD. When I am flexible and accommodating with X, it is usually in the best interest of DS, and I do the work. I rarely (if ever) ask DH to do anything for DS, although he would be willing, because I feel like DS is my sole responsibility since I am the parent.

The trouble with lists of frost hrady and dry hardy plants, is that they vary so much from area to area. Where my parents-in-law live in the wimmera, their sandy soil and lower rainfall means plants like lavender and rosemary will die if they aren't watered, whereas mine are never watered and do extremely well here on my heavier soils, colder climate and higher rainfall. My echiums, which are listed as 'frost sensitive' have been frosted many, many times and are growing like crazy things. I love them. As for trees - the five acre front of my block is planted out to about 1000 decidious trees. I love them at any time of the year. The silver birches look great in any season, as do the ornamental pears, with their shiny red bark. How would you ever enjoy the twisted limbs of the Scotch elm if the leaves didn't drop off once a year? We mulch with straw and manure. The large groves of birch trees were not watered through the drought and did very well. We are slowly manuring and mulching every tree. The ones we have done are growing like crazy and need very little attention. As for water - we don't get town water, so supply our own. I use it however I want to at whatever time of the day I want to. If anyone doesn't like it, come here and tell me face to face. (...and I will squirt you with the hose ;-) You want to save some of the planet's resources? Stop buying pre-prepared food in multiple packaging. Buy 'whole' food only and make your own. My absolute top plant for dry, un-mulched, un-manured sandy, clay soil? Ornamental grapes. They look good in winter too. Finally, I have lived, worked and gardened in every outback, stinking hot, dry and impoverished place in Australia. We moved here because of the climate and rainfall and I intend to plant, water, manure and mulch whatever I damn well please. If that offends anyone, as my nephew would say - talk to the eyeballs. Or try gardening in Paraburdoo without watering, mulching or manuring anything and see how much fun gardening can really be! Robyn

Hi Jim: I forget to ask what brand of brewer's yeast you take, and how you make it yummy? I will have to try organic cow milk with my Brewer's yeast ... I gave soy milk & B.Y for my kid and it wrecked her sleep many times. It also wrecked my sleep if taken in the evening. When I googled for "soy" within gardenweb, many women reported it screwed up their hormones: make them depressed, moody, and weepy. Plus it messes up one's thyroid (hypothyroid). That sounds absolutely delicious. I have pineapple and coconut, but no snow. I wish I'd known of this when we lived in Colorado, I could have made it 7 months of the year. :o)

My kids take that syrup that you can buy for slushies and pour it over a bowlful of snow. They love it.

That sounds good - really good. But in a way it's not so good. I am buried in snow here in New Hampshire.

After the holidays I cleaned out all the tempting stuff from my cupboards, and now I am looking at the "healthy" pineapple on my counter and the mountain of new snow outside my window......

Perhaps if I hadn't gotten my car stuck three times in three days, in various snowbanks around my driveway, I too might be tempted to make this yummy sounding creation. In fact I may start carrying around the ingredients in my car. At least then I could have a treat after all the frustration. (can you tell I am slightly frustrated with the snow? actually more so my car..)
It does sound really yummy, and I love fresh pineapple...

Yes, when we got snow in the Panhandle area we made snow ice cream and it was a treat. My mom used whatever she had for milk (1/2 and 1/2, evaporated milk, milk), sugar and vanilla. Metal bowl, yep, she used metal bowls, too.

Probably, I won't need that recipe here in SA. :(

Winter in Pa.

Dear Diary:

Aug. 12 - Moved into our new home in Pennsylvania. It is so beautiful here. The hills and river valleys are so picturesque. I have a beautiful old oak tree in my front yard. Can hardly wait to see the change in the seasons. This is truly God's Country.

Oct. 14 - Pennsylvania is such a gorgeous place to live, one of the real special places on Earth. The leaves are turning a multitude of different colors. I love all of the shades of reds, oranges and yellows, they are so bright. I want to walk through all of the beautiful hills and spot some white tail deer. They are so graceful; certainly they must be the most peaceful creatures on Earth. This must be paradise.

Nov. 11 - Deer season opens this week. I can't imagine why anyone would want to shoot these elegant animals. They are the very symbol of peace and tranquility here in Pennsylvania. I hope it snows soon. I love it here!

Dec. 2 - It snowed last night. I woke to the usual wonderful sight: everything covered in a beautiful blanket of white. The oak tree is magnificent. It looks like a postcard. We went out and swept the snow from the steps and driveway. The air is so crisp, clean and refreshing. We had a snowball fight. I won, and the snowplow came down the street. He must have gotten too close to the driveway because we had to go out and shovel the end of the driveway again. What a beautiful place. Nature in harmony. I love it here!

Dec. 12 - More snow last night. I love it! The plow did his cute little trick again. What a rascal. A winter wonderland. I love it here!

Dec. 19 - More snow - couldn't get out of the driveway to get to work in time. I'm exhausted from all of the shoveling. And that snowplow!

Dec. 21 - More of that white s**t coming down. I've got blisters on my hands and a kink in my back. I think that the snowplow driver waits around the corner until I'm done shoveling the driveway. *^-#*ole.

Dec. 25 - White Christmas? More freakin' snow. If I ever get my hands on the sonofaWitch who drives that snowplow, I swear I'll castrate him. And why don't they use more salt on these roads to melt this crap??

Dec. 28 - It hasn't stopped snowing since Christmas. I have been inside since then, except of course when that SOB "Snowplow Harry" comes by. Can't go anywhere, cars are buried up to the windows. Weather man says to expect another 10 inches. Do you have any idea how many shovelfuls 10 inches is??

Jan. 1 - Happy New Year? The way it's coming down it won't melt until the 4th of July ! The snowplow got stuck down the road and the s***head actually had the $$lls to come and ask to borrow a shovel! I told him I'd broken 6 already this season.

Jan. 4 - Finally got out of the house. We went to the store to get some food and a ***damn deer ran out in front of my car and I hit the bas***ard. It did $3,000 in damage to the car. Those beasts ought to be killed. The hunters should have a longer season if you ask me.

Jan. 27 - Warmed up a little and rained today. The rain turned the snow into ice and the weight of it broke the main limb of the oak tree in the front yard and it went through the roof. I should have cut that old piece of crap into fireplace wood when I had the chance.

May 23 - Took my car to the local garage. Would you believe the whole underside of the car is rusted away from all of that damn salt they dump on the road? Car looks like a bashed up, heap of rusted cow muffins.

May 10 - Sold the car, the house, and moved to Florida. I can't imagine why anyone in their freakin' mind would ever want to live in the God forsaken State of Pennsylvania.

We used to make maple wax too. I couldn't remember that that it was called wax until Maureen's post. IIRC, the syrup was boiled to the soft ball stage, then drizzled over the packed snow. That made it into a candy.

Another treat was when my grandmother would boil maple syrup, to the soft ball stage I believe, and give each of us a portion in a small bowl. We would stir it with a spoon until it crystallized into maple cream, then eat it. My grandfather had a sugar house, so we always had lots of maple syrup.

Lou I laugh everytime I read that story. Honestly, I think the first time I heard it was 10+ years ago and people change the state name but it still is just as funny. Thanks for the laugh.

Jim what excellent memories to have of your grandfather's sugarhouse and the maple syrup. Sounds wonderful!

Here's the "official" recipe. Harve tells me it makes about 5 quarts of ice cream. And he remarked that a gallon in the freezer is particularly good brought out on the 4th of July

In a large pan (about 8 quart) mix 1 pint whipping cream, 1 pint "half & half", 4 cups sugar, and 1 1/ 2 2 cups flavoring. (Flavoring could be any FRESH fruit that is liquefied in a blender on high speed, pineapple and coconut flakes or berry syrup. Add sugar to berries Âstrawberry, black raspberry, etc and strain out seeds.) With a wooden spoon, stir in fresh fallen, clean snow until mixer gets firm like ice cream. It takes 2 Â 3 gallons of snow. When firm, put in containers and freeze. Eat in Styrofoam bowls because it melts in regular bowls and gets watery.

I rather hope that this recipe is the charm that keeps away any more snow!!

Hi Linda - Based on your original post (hadn't seen your follow-up w/ official recipe) DH & I decided to make up a batch after lunch - we're up at the lake enjoying a vacation day.....

So we did pureed fresh pineapple, 1/4 cup sweetened coconut, 1 cup whipping cream, 1/4 cup sugar & a big bowl full of fresh snow. Whipped like mad, like you said, and OMG!! Like you said.

Only thing.. DH decided to add a drizzle of dark rum on top of his. I'm not much of a drinker, but I tried it and!!!the ultimate pina colada ice cream! He said I should contribute his secret ingredient to the forum.

Thanks for the OP. We're dyed in the wool New Englanders, yet neither of us had ever tried this. What fun!

Right now I am starring out my office window at the same snow which fell last December. It no longer has its fluffy white appearance but has turned a crusty gray. Even when we do get another snowfall which is bound to come up here I doubt that I would chance it to be clean enough to eat.

I never heard of such a thing.
Now I wish I had known that when it snowed here the other day.
It rarely snows here and that snow cream would have been such a cool thing to do. (pun not intended )
