Even in not-so-frigid North Carolina we would make "snowcream" - that's what it was called when I was growing up. Yep, just take a metal bowl outside, brush off the top layer of fresh snow (avoiding any 'yellow' snow - LOL!), scoop the snow into the bowl, take inside and add vanilla and sugar to taste, eat it up.

Never heard of it, but it sounds like fun! And something to do when it's too darn cold to do anything else!

That sounds absolutely delicious. I have pineapple and coconut, but no snow. I wish I'd known of this when we lived in Colorado, I could have made it 7 months of the year. :o)

The next time we have snow, I'll try this. Do you know if you can use canned pineapple?

My kids take that syrup that you can buy for slushies and pour it over a bowlful of snow. They love it.

That sounds good - really good. But in a way it's not so good. I am buried in snow here in New Hampshire.

After the holidays I cleaned out all the tempting stuff from my cupboards, and now I am looking at the "healthy" pineapple on my counter and the mountain of new snow outside my window......

Linda we did it all the time when I was younger and boy was it good. We also made our own homemade Slurpees with snow.

Here's my recipe for snow:

Wait for snowstorm
Go outside
Stick tongue out
When snowflakes land on tongue, pull it back in your mouth and swallow.

Snowcream! So much better than ice cream and we used to get to make it every year or so, but it never snows enough here anymore.

Oh Yeah that snow ice cream is a huge hit here in Florida.

Just don't use yellow snow.

Perhaps if I hadn't gotten my car stuck three times in three days, in various snowbanks around my driveway, I too might be tempted to make this yummy sounding creation. In fact I may start carrying around the ingredients in my car. At least then I could have a treat after all the frustration. (can you tell I am slightly frustrated with the snow? actually more so my car..)

Yes, when we got snow in the Panhandle area we made snow ice cream and it was a treat. My mom used whatever she had for milk (1/2 and 1/2, evaporated milk, milk), sugar and vanilla. Metal bowl, yep, she used metal bowls, too.

Probably, I won't need that recipe here in SA. :(

Dear Diary:

Aug. 12 - Moved into our new home in Pennsylvania. It is so beautiful here. The hills and river valleys are so picturesque. I have a beautiful old oak tree in my front yard. Can hardly wait to see the change in the seasons. This is truly God's Country.

Oct. 14 - Pennsylvania is such a gorgeous place to live, one of the real special places on Earth. The leaves are turning a multitude of different colors. I love all of the shades of reds, oranges and yellows, they are so bright. I want to walk through all of the beautiful hills and spot some white tail deer. They are so graceful; certainly they must be the most peaceful creatures on Earth. This must be paradise.

Nov. 11 - Deer season opens this week. I can't imagine why anyone would want to shoot these elegant animals. They are the very symbol of peace and tranquility here in Pennsylvania. I hope it snows soon. I love it here!

Dec. 2 - It snowed last night. I woke to the usual wonderful sight: everything covered in a beautiful blanket of white. The oak tree is magnificent. It looks like a postcard. We went out and swept the snow from the steps and driveway. The air is so crisp, clean and refreshing. We had a snowball fight. I won, and the snowplow came down the street. He must have gotten too close to the driveway because we had to go out and shovel the end of the driveway again. What a beautiful place. Nature in harmony. I love it here!

Dec. 12 - More snow last night. I love it! The plow did his cute little trick again. What a rascal. A winter wonderland. I love it here!

Dec. 19 - More snow - couldn't get out of the driveway to get to work in time. I'm exhausted from all of the shoveling. And that snowplow!

Dec. 21 - More of that white s**t coming down. I've got blisters on my hands and a kink in my back. I think that the snowplow driver waits around the corner until I'm done shoveling the driveway. *^-#*ole.

Dec. 25 - White Christmas? More freakin' snow. If I ever get my hands on the sonofaWitch who drives that snowplow, I swear I'll castrate him. And why don't they use more salt on these roads to melt this crap??

Dec. 28 - It hasn't stopped snowing since Christmas. I have been inside since then, except of course when that SOB "Snowplow Harry" comes by. Can't go anywhere, cars are buried up to the windows. Weather man says to expect another 10 inches. Do you have any idea how many shovelfuls 10 inches is??

Jan. 1 - Happy New Year? The way it's coming down it won't melt until the 4th of July ! The snowplow got stuck down the road and the s***head actually had the $$lls to come and ask to borrow a shovel! I told him I'd broken 6 already this season.

Jan. 4 - Finally got out of the house. We went to the store to get some food and a ***damn deer ran out in front of my car and I hit the bas***ard. It did $3,000 in damage to the car. Those beasts ought to be killed. The hunters should have a longer season if you ask me.

Jan. 27 - Warmed up a little and rained today. The rain turned the snow into ice and the weight of it broke the main limb of the oak tree in the front yard and it went through the roof. I should have cut that old piece of crap into fireplace wood when I had the chance.

May 23 - Took my car to the local garage. Would you believe the whole underside of the car is rusted away from all of that damn salt they dump on the road? Car looks like a bashed up, heap of rusted cow muffins.

May 10 - Sold the car, the house, and moved to Florida. I can't imagine why anyone in their freakin' mind would ever want to live in the God forsaken State of Pennsylvania.

We used to make maple wax too. I couldn't remember that that it was called wax until Maureen's post. IIRC, the syrup was boiled to the soft ball stage, then drizzled over the packed snow. That made it into a candy.

Another treat was when my grandmother would boil maple syrup, to the soft ball stage I believe, and give each of us a portion in a small bowl. We would stir it with a spoon until it crystallized into maple cream, then eat it. My grandfather had a sugar house, so we always had lots of maple syrup.

Lou I laugh everytime I read that story. Honestly, I think the first time I heard it was 10+ years ago and people change the state name but it still is just as funny. Thanks for the laugh.

Jim what excellent memories to have of your grandfather's sugarhouse and the maple syrup. Sounds wonderful!

Here's the "official" recipe. Harve tells me it makes about 5 quarts of ice cream. And he remarked that a gallon in the freezer is particularly good brought out on the 4th of July

In a large pan (about 8 quart) mix 1 pint whipping cream, 1 pint "half & half", 4 cups sugar, and 1 1/ 2 2 cups flavoring. (Flavoring could be any FRESH fruit that is liquefied in a blender on high speed, pineapple and coconut flakes or berry syrup. Add sugar to berries Âstrawberry, black raspberry, etc and strain out seeds.) With a wooden spoon, stir in fresh fallen, clean snow until mixer gets firm like ice cream. It takes 2 Â 3 gallons of snow. When firm, put in containers and freeze. Eat in Styrofoam bowls because it melts in regular bowls and gets watery.

I rather hope that this recipe is the charm that keeps away any more snow!!

Hi Linda - Based on your original post (hadn't seen your follow-up w/ official recipe) DH & I decided to make up a batch after lunch - we're up at the lake enjoying a vacation day.....

So we did pureed fresh pineapple, 1/4 cup sweetened coconut, 1 cup whipping cream, 1/4 cup sugar & a big bowl full of fresh snow. Whipped like mad, like you said, and OMG!! Like you said.

Only thing.. DH decided to add a drizzle of dark rum on top of his. I'm not much of a drinker, but I tried it and!!!the ultimate pina colada ice cream! He said I should contribute his secret ingredient to the forum.

Right now I am starring out my office window at the same snow which fell last December. It no longer has its fluffy white appearance but has turned a crusty gray. Even when we do get another snowfall which is bound to come up here I doubt that I would chance it to be clean enough to eat.

Now I wish I had known that when it snowed here the other day.
It rarely snows here and that snow cream would have been such a cool thing to do. (pun not intended )
