Online Shopping Gift Return - Etiquette Question

I did most of my holiday shopping online, including a wall clock from Amazon for my BIL. The clock isn't working so my SIL let me know and is asking what she should do.

So....in this situation, is it my responsibility to take back the gift and mail it back for a replacement or refund- since I know there will be a shipping charge. Or should I print out the exchange/refund form that Amazon provides and give it to my SIL to handle, which would mean she incurs a shipping charge, and then I suppose I could re-order the clock.

It's a bit complicated also because when I checked on the website, for some reason the clock is now more expensive(!) and is evidently back ordered so won't be shipped for 7-9 weeks(!!!). Which makes me wonder if I should just handle the return, get a refund and then try to replace the clock somewhere else.

What to do, what to do. Modern etiquette indeed!
