I'm at the design point, too, so I'm no expert . . . That said, I think your space is plenty big. You'll just have to give a lot of thought to how you want it to serve you and work from there. Mine is going to be about 6.5 x 10, but I'll have three door openings. I plan on doing built-ins and lots of hooks the maximize the space.

It really depends on what functions your room will need to 'perform'. If it's just for a place to take off shoes/coats and store things like backpacks and some sports equipment it sounds like your size may work. Especially with some well designed benches/ lockers etc.

There are some really nice mudroom lockers posted in a post not too long ago- last week sometime. You might want to search it.

We live on a farm and the mudroom was a BIG DEAL for us. Our is probably about the same size as yours - we would have made it bigger but it's attached to the "clutter room" a very large laundry/all purpose room. Has several work stations, a laundry tub and as many cabinets as the kitchen. There is also a 1/2 bath in there. The most important aspect of our mudroom is the entries- there are doors from the side porch, the garage and the back door. 90% of our traffic will come through the mud room.

Good Luck with your design plans. I would give up space in less used areas to gain more in something you will use as much as your mudroom.

Ya, basically we want it for a place for our kids to put their coats, shoes and bakcpacks. We shouldn't be dealing with alot of mud really. Right now all of their shoes are in a storage unit in our garage and their coats hung on the wall in the garage and with 5 kids you can only imagine what it looks like since we there is no room at all for it. I go insane daily over the lack of space for all of this stuff.

We will only have the mud room entrance coming in from the garage as we will not have room for another entrance for the mud room as we are building a mother in law suite off that side and back of our house for my parents.

My current mud room [I perfer to call it a 'coat room', since I don't actually store mud in there] is about 8x8 which would be great IF it didn't have a door in every wall-- garage, laundry, kitchen, back door all come together there.

I think your size will be good, but I wouldn't do actual 'lockers' with doors. On a busy morning, there will be enough traffic and people in there that there may not be enough room for the doors to swing. I also wanted to mention that I've seen some doorless lockers that were more about looks than storage. To get the most of them, they have to be wide enough to have 3 hooks-- one either side and on the back. If you only have the rear one, you haven't really gained a thing, but with the side hooks, you can nearly triple your hanging space.

Also a good idea to have the under bench area either divided into cubbies or at least with a shelf. If it's just open, its always hard to find both shoes of a pair at the same time.

Our mud room is only 10 X 6. It is the room you enter from the garage. But you can also access it from the office which has it's own entry from the the front of the house (a "second" front door)...

Here is our cabinet design for the mud room. My dh actually designed it and I'm really loving it! Can I just say how excited I am to have a (somewhat) organized home???

It has one deep coat closet and 5 smaller lockers. We have 3 kids so that's 1 locker for each of us. But you could use a similar layout and just have lockers for your kids.

As you can see top / locker part is shallower than the cubbies below it so the entire surface above the cubbies is a bench. The cubbies are deep enough (they'll be individual drawers) for some shoe storage. My electrician is also adding an outlet in each locker (cell phone / ipod charging...etc).

I'm also toying with the idea of adding metal sheeting to the face of each cabinet for a magnet board / message center for each locker.

From memory, out of all of the houses we'd walked, the floor plan below had a similar sized laundry area off of the garage. Maybe it will help you to look at the floor plan, match it up against yours.

oruboris -- Let's start a campaign to eliminate the term 'mud room'. I vote for substituting the old 'back hall' -- since that's what I call the area between our garage and kitchen. It has a door to the backyard too.

There's the laundry end w/window; a half-bath (not our powder room); cabinets; a 30" X 9' closet that's pantry, coats, dry goods storage, mops, general 'stuff'.

Since you're in the planning stages, here's what I would have done differently with ours.... We have a 5 x 5 room, adjacent to the clutter room. It has a large window which nice for natural light but I would have elimiated that. It uses up valuable wall space where extra hooks and/or cubbies could have gone. Make sure you have plenty of space for shoes. More space for shoes than coats, I think. Be sure to utilize all the wall space and verticle space ~ the plan by kaydles is wonderful!
We have three door openings - one to garage (locking door), one to living space (no door), one to clutter room (pocket door). I wish we had a pocket door on the opening to the living space. Always the mudroom is a mess and I don't want company to see it. We also have a crawling baby who LOVES to go in there and pick up dirt and rocks off the floor. I can put up a baby gate but a door would be much better.

I have looked at this thread a couple times and only just realized that the houseplan I am looking at right now has an entry hall of very similar dimensions (6x9) We plan on a specific spot for keys (maybe we will stop losing them). But other than that I don't have too many great ideas so hopefully others will. I have heard cell phone charging stations mentioned before also possibly pet beds underneath a bench for putting on shoes.
