Am I the only one who gets tired of cooking occasionally.Help.Hubbys birthday is next week,I want too make something special for him,my mind is blank.

hes away so I have some time,something special...any ideas..

What sort of food does he like? What is your skill set? What can you afford?
No point in suggesting Lobster Thermidor, for instance, if your DH is allergic to shellfish, you prefer plain cooking and lobster would break the budget.

There are so many good recipes on this site you can probably find inspiration by checking out the "WFD" (What's For Dinner) threads.

I love looking through cookbooks and check them out at my local library all the time. I've got Thomas Keller's new "Ad Hoc At Home" on my coffee table right now. Just thumbing through it makes me want to give something new a try.

I wanted to make a citrus cheesecake for the Valentine's Day Virtual Dinner and decided to look around at recipes since I usually just make modifications to my normal New York style cheesecake. I found several citrus recipes but they all were smaller ones made with only a pound of cheese. For Valentines I wanted something more decadent. I found this classic recipe on Food Network and modified it to make it citrus. I had planned to make some lemon curd for the top so I skipped the sour cream top, but ended up eating it plain and it was anything but plain. Came out really good so here is the recipe.Also, instead of just zest I used the juice from the Meyer Lemon and the lime. I also added a tablespoon of cornstarch to make up for the added juice. FoodNetwork.com Classic Cheesecake From Food Network Kitchens Prep Time: 15 min Inactive Prep Time: 8 hr 0 min Cook Time: 1 hr 10 min Level: Intermediate Serves: 8 to 10 servings This is a classic cheesecake -- velvety, rich, sweet and so satisfying. We are major fans of a thin sour cream cap on top of cheesecakes; it's the perfect balance to this rich cake. Ingredients Crust: 6 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs 2 tablespoons granulated sugar Pinch fine salt Filling: 2 pounds cream cheese, at room temperature 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar 1 1/4 cups sour cream 6 large eggs, lightly beaten 1 tablespoon vanilla paste (see cook's note) or extract 1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest [used zest from 1 Meyer lemon] 1 teaspoon finely grated orange zest [zest from half an orange] [added zest from 1 lime also] As said above I added the juice from the lemon and lime plus a tablespoon of cornstarch dissolved in the juices. Topping: 3/4 cup sour cream 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar 1/4 teaspoon vanilla paste or extract Berries, optional Directions Position a rack in the middle of the oven and preheat to 325 degrees F. For the crust: Melt the butter, covered in the microwave, in a medium microwave safe bowl, or a saucepan. Brush a 9-inch spring form pan with some of the butter. Stir the remaining butter together with the crumbs, sugar, and salt. Press the crumb mixture over the bottom of the pan, taking care to get the crust evenly into the edges. Bake until golden brown, 15 to 18 minutes. Cool. Wrap the bottom and up the sides of the pan with foil and put in a roasting pan. For the filling: Beat the cream cheese on medium speed with a hand-held mixer until smooth. Add the granulated sugar and beat just until light and fluffy, scraping the sides of the bowl and beaters as needed. Slowly beat in the sour cream, then eggs, vanilla and both citrus zests; take care not to over whip. Pour into the cooled crust. Bring a medium saucepan or kettle of water to a boil. Gently place the roasting pan in the oven (don't pull the rack out of the oven). Pour in enough hot water to come about halfway up the side of the springform pan. Bake the cheesecake for about 1 hour and 10 minutes---the outside of the cake will set but the center will still be loose.[Mine took almost 1hour and a half] For the topping: Stir together the sour cream, confectioners' sugar and vanilla. Spread over the top of the cooked cheesecake and return to the oven for 5 minutes. Turn the oven off, cook the cheesecake in the residual heat in the oven for about1 hour. This gentle finish minimizes the risk of the dreaded crack in your cheesecake. Remove cheesecake from the roasting pan to a rack. Run a knife around the edges and cool to room temperature. Cover and refrigerate at least 8 hours or overnight. Bring cheesecake to room temperature 30 minutes before serving. Remove the springform ring. Dip a knife in warm water, wipe dry before slicing each piece. Serve with berries, if desired. Notes We love vanilla bean paste. It has intense vanilla bean flavor in a convenient paste form. It's a great way to add great flavor and distinctive vanilla flecks without having to use a whole bean. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My note: Do let it set in refrigerator for time suggested. It's a very creamy cheesecake.

Going past the stir-fry

It's hard to make generalities about over 1 billion people, lol. But I have found that there are many, many Chinese families who don't stir-fry at all, or do it very seldom. Not every American family eats burgers and hot dogs, either, for a local analogy. I guess if others judged American culture by TV ads and billboards, they would think we all lived on a daily diet of McDonald's Big Macs! But in general, many Asian cuisines do have a "triple path". There is home cooking; there is restaurant cooking; and there is banquet, or feast, food. I was talking to my Hong Kong-born Chinese-Portugese DH a few weeks ago, and he (finally) remembered to tell me a story about one of his uncles who died over 15 yrs ago. This uncle was famous in the family for making the Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce, or ho yau gai lan as it used to be spelled (I'm terrible with the new spellings, sorry). I've done this dish, and it seems very simple. Blanch the gai lan, stir-fry it quickly, drizzle it with oyster sauce. What's so hard about it? DH told me his uncle was so meticulous and painstaking about doing this dish, it was intimidating even to just watch him. Every cut had to be a precise size, the water had to be just the right temperature, the timing was down to the second. The wok had to be heated for XX number of minutes with just enough oil but not too much; the tossing and last-minute steaming done always the same way. In six decades of eating, DH says his uncle's gai lan remains the best. And every time, because he was so exacting about it, it was always perfect. But it was a lot of work, done to ensure that nothing was left to chance. He very seldom made it, in fact. Just the news that there was going to be a party and that Uncle had promised to make his gai lan, was enough to make everybody, even reluctant-to-socialize teenagers, show up for dinner! Oh, and outside of the gai lan, hardly anyone in DH's family, all 200+ members in Vancouver BC, stir-fries. Most of them don't even own a wok, which is interesting because otherwise they've kept their HK culture intact very assiduously. Unlike the American relatives, all of whom by the second generation barely remember their Cantonese, all the Canadian relatives speak Cantonese at home, so that even the fourth generation little kids are bi-lingual.

My absolute favorite lately has been The New Basics Cookbook--notes I wrote in the margins say OMG!! and Awesome! which is not what I usually write. I love those group cookbooks from churches, schools, and special groups. I love some of the little cookbooks I've bought at the grocery store checkout. I often refer to the web or my files of recipes that I've collected from newspapers and magazines. +The Betty Crocker Cookbook binder that my mom gave me as a wedding shower gift. +Betty Crocker's New Boys and Girls Cook Book--a gift from my parents for my 8th birthday. I still refer to it! I'm trying to use my appliances more so have discovered these great books: +The Bread Lover's Bread Machine Cookbook +Better Homes and Gardens Crockery Cookbook +The Cast Iron Skillet Cookbook (johnliu you had me laughing so hard!! Does he have a favorite meal that he orders when you go out that you could make at home and surprise him? I know someone here can help you create it!

I also get into a rut and feel like I'm making the same ol same ol. Then I come in here and look to see what others are making.

This is a very inspiring forum... just peek thru some old posts, see pictures, recipes and I'm sure you'll find something!!

I agree, first thing is to find out what your husband likes. Elery doesn't care for beef, so prime rib would be lost on him, but a leg of lamb would make him happy.

So, what does hubs like? Fish? Pork? Steak? Is he a meat and potatoes guy or is he adventurous? And most importantly, what kind of cake does he like best?

He likes everything,hes not picky,budget doesnt matter and Im a pretty good cook,I ask where do you want to eat he says kimmmys place.(mine)& his lol

Breakfast for dinner:

Bacon
Sausages
Waffles
Maple Syrup

Guys like it when you cater to them. Suprise him. Lots of hot chocolate. Spike it with peppermint schnapps and whipped cream.

What do I know? I'm married to one guy. Don't know much about the rest of them...except my 5 brothers would be thrilled with it.

Then of course, there's the boiled lobster and champagne on a beach. A clam boil. A liverwurst and onion sandwich with a beer on a ferry going to the Vineyard for a week. Pizza at his favorite sports bar (yeah, he gets to face the t.v. screen).

Oh - is he a vegetarian?

You know him better than we do.

Whatever you do with love, he'll appreciate it.

OK, so you want to WOW him, I'd go with either prime rib or seafood, maybe scallops or lobster.

If he likes pasta, maybe that linguine with clam sauce that so many here love. Depending on the weather, maybe a cioppino or paella.

Homemade bread is always good and I've never met a guy that didn't love it. It can be plain white or it can be wheat or onion rye, whatever "goes" with your choice of entree.

If I made cioppino I'd make crusty homemade bread, some kind of a salad, probably with oranges/dried cranberries/nuts included, and a citrus kind of dessert like Dishesdone's lemon custard cakes.

Pasta seems heavier to me, but I'd still go with bread, a lighter salad with mostly green stuff and something like ice cream or sorbet for dessert.

Steak? Baked potatoes or those "crashed potatoes" Ellen just posted about, or Ann T's Parisienne Potatoes, a side of roasted asparagus, probably Yorkshire Pudding. Devil's Food Cake and homemade ice cream for dessert.

Anything sound good yet?

I have another to add. This is the best scampi recipe I have ever had, and I have tried many!

Ultimate Shrimp Scampi
From Allrecipes submitted by: Slipmaloney

1 (16 ounce) package angel hair pasta
1/2 cup butter
4 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 cup minced onion
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
1 tablespoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 dash Worcestershire sauce
1/4 cup lemon juice
1 teaspoon dry white wine
1 pound peeled and deveined medium shrimp
1/2 cup Asiago cheese, diced
1 large avocado - peeled, pitted and diced

Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the angel hair pasta, and cook until al dente, 2 to 3 minutes; drain.

Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Stir in the garlic, onion, parsley, salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, and white wine. Once the mixture begins to bubble, increase the heat to medium-high, and stir in the shrimp. Cook and stir until the shrimp turn pink, and are no longer transparent in the center, about 5 minutes.

Serve the scampi over a bed of angel hair pasta, and sprinkle with Asiago cheese and avocado to serve.
