If you had $50,000 to remodel your home....?
Comments (45)I already have my wish list ready: Bathroom Overhaul (all new tub and toilet, tile, add granite counter and new sink to existing cabinet). The vent fan needs replacing as well, I would like an automatic unit that senses humidity and turns itself on and off. New stove and dishwasher. New washer and dryer. Drywall the laundry area and add cupboards and a countertop. Widen the driveway just a bit so the angle isn't quite as sharp and I no longer have to drive over the grass. Deck and screen house around the pool, or take down the pool and install a cement pad and greenhouse in that area. Oh, and I need a new mattress for my bedroom and a queen size bed for my daughter. That should about cover it ;) Dances....See MoreComparing these paint quotes
Comments (19)I completely agree with paintguy. You shouldn't have to slam the competition to get business. This time of year (especially) a good painter will be busy. These guys are steering you in the right direction. Get everything in writing, for your sake, and the painter's sake. Make sure all your communication, and agreements are clear. Sometimes I ask for a deposit if the customer is not someone I am used to dealing with...Sometimes a contractor or painter doesn't know if they will get paid on time. (But my bills always come in on time!) If you are set on Sherwin Williams, but are doubting the quality, do yourself a BIG favor and go down to that store. Talk to the manager, tell them you are wondering about the difference in paints, and ask them for a sample or a demo. Odds are, the painter is giving you the standard (which he is) but if you are picky and demand a high quality finish...GO with Cashmere. I'm not a fan of SW (I just don't like the feel of it) but their Cashmere product is something else. It is more expensive then ProMar 200...But it is definitely worth it. And on your sheen options...From a pro painter and a Mom...Using flat on walls, especially high traffic areas such as hallways, stairways, kids' rooms...Not a good idea. You will be touching up constantly, and your walls will not take any washing at all. At the very least, use an eggshell. Please. It will save you anguish. (I used Satin just about everywhere in my house except bathrooms and kitchen, where I used Semi-Gloss.) Good Luck!...See MorePaint quote — seems super high to me
Comments (28)Does that include any crown molding, too? I also don't think that is out of line for Chicago. Once I started painting my own homes, I had a new appreciation for my father who always did the ceilings. Now I have problems with occasional vertigo and don't really trust myself on a ladder and stepstool for extended periods of time, so I am no longer going to be doing this. DH has zero motivation for doing any type of painting. So, we'll be hiring out our future painting....See MorePaint quote seems super high to me.
Comments (3)I agree, that's stupidly high for that job. If you are at all handy, you can do it yourself. The worst part is replacing drywall on the ceiling. I'd see if you can't hire a handyman to come in and do just that, then do the painting yourself. Painting is NOT ROCKET SCIENCE. Making paint is, but painting itself is usually just a matter of the proper prep work and the right tools. If you're young and spry, you can do it with just a ladder, some rollers, an extension handle, dropclothes, etc. If not so spry, and you're ceilings aren't too high, get some scaffolding - there are one or two of the cheaper scaffolds under or around $100 (check Home Despot online) that work pretty well if you have standard height ceilings, otherwise (for high ceilings, you need taller sturdier scaffolding) it's a $200 or so investment to get something that you can go up 6' safely on. Scaffolding for exterior use needs leveling legs which don't come with the cheaper scaffolds - but may be a worthwhile investment. When all is said and done, there is no way you will come to anywhere near $1300 investment in tools, equipment, and consumables (paint and whatnot) for that job, plus you'll have the tools and equipment for the next time you want to paint. Or if you want to string up lights on the house, exterior scaffolding (which you can use indoors as well) makes that task way safer and easier. Lots of uses for scaffold once you've got it. Cleaning gutters, stringing lights and taking them down, checking the roof, painting the exterior as well as the interior, etc etc etc. I've done all my own painting for decades. Home Despot gives classes, they may have a basic how-to-paint class (for free). Otherwise read, remember to prime, select a good paint and middlin' good tools, and you can do nearly all of your own painting. It's a great investment to learn how to do it yourself - even if you end up paying for some jobs in the future, at least you'll know better what kind of service you're getting....See Morejdubb
