I guess I converted him! Message from New Orleans

As some of you may know, I was to go to New Orleans for 10 days with my dh. However as it approached, I felt I needed some time home alone...a precious commodity which I don't get too often and forget how much I need.

Well, I finally got a food report from the lad...

We walked over to Emeril's and had a very nice dinner. They have small tables around the outside of the bar which are strictly first come, first served. Everything in the dining room is res. only. By 6:30 the DR was full and so was the bar. We both had chicken and sausage gumbo which was very tasty and spicy but not hot. Then he had broiled shrimp with Cajun spices. I had a grilled Niman ranch double cut pork chop with carmelized sweet potatoes with tamarind glaze and green chile mole sauce. Awesome in size and taste. The gumbo was also quite good. I then ordered Emeril's Banana Cream Pie with banana crust with caramel sauce and chocolate shavings. I couldn't resist the pie which is huge - I brought it back to my suite in a box and will eat it tomorrow - there is a fridge in the room. All this (mine, not Steve's) and coffee came to $60 including tax and tip.

Actually, I have the details: Gumbo $8 (bowl not cup), Chop $27, pie $8 and coffee $2. Oh yeah, and endless refills of 2 kinds of breads - corn bread muffin and a small focaccia - both were very good.

Pictures at 11 (actually not until I get home since I have no adaptor for the camera card).

Besides getting the details, He Took Pictures! Two engineers, of a certain age..., and they took pictures! I love it! (and him too). I guess I could remind him about the pralines about now, huh???? Maureen

OMG Maureen, he's better than any food writer I've ever read! I think your DH has found a new calling:-) His descriptions are really mouthwatering - I can't wait for the pictures.

Yep.....he converted! And so sweet of him to give all the details too. I can't wait to see the pictures! I hope he took some of the restaurant too.

The banana pie sounds incredible!

Joe would never do this, well maybe if I begged and reminded him several times.

Sorry how this has worked out for you, how frustrating! I'm not a pro, but here's my two cents. If it were me, I would get a packet of small post-it flags and use them to go around to all the detail "picky" areas, like where the shoe molding wasn't painted at the miter cut, wasn't caulked, etc., and flag ALL the areas you want the crew to fix when they come. The white shoe molding under the cabinets is just laughable. You will likely need to find a match/similar color yourself, or have the floor co custom stain new shoe to match the cabs (although they haven't proven themselves that reliable so I think the best choice is to search out the exact product you want, as you will care about the match more than them) and get it to the site and have them install it. If the floor is not level/popping, is there a warranty on their labor? That does not seem acceptable for the company to claim "level" is not a base install requirement. One pic where you asked should there be caulk - I wondered if this already had that shoe molding in place or if it was added after the install? I hope they left room for an expansion joint. Not to pile on with another complaint, but this photo that shows the flooring from a wider view looks like the joints are too repetitive, does not look very random - perhaps there were inexperienced installers involved? I would have a plumber come and reset both toilets, asap, before that leak ruins your flooring. If there is a way to turn off the water to that leaking toilet and get the water out now, I'd do that then wait for the plumber. Be advised that even with a plumber setting it, you may have some wax squeeze up through the bolt holes when weight is applied to the toilet and it settles in with initial usage. I do not think I would have expected toilet reset as part of the price I paid the floor co, unless it was specifically discussed and set out in the contract, as that is an entirely different trade and a floor co isn't necessarily qualified to do that. In our area, only licensed plumbers are permitted to do that (although I have had one tile guy color outside the lines and set a toilet for me ... shhhh!)

It is my understanding that the hearworm pill does act as a once a month dewormer for other kinds too. I think I read that on the back, but don't have it here. The idea was that the pill may have "primed" your dogs system to be sensitive or irritable and it is overactive. ( duh can't seem to put it into words.) and needs to be calmed down. If it is not a medical reason, then go back to square one with housetraining. I am betting on his tummy tho, dogs seem to get the idea to poop outside much faster than the concept of peeing outside. It is not pee too is it? Our dogs were crated usually for 8 hours a day with no ill effects as they were worked with and loved the rest of the time and slept in our bedroom. The vet and other resources said that it was fine,(her dog was crated that long) that dogs love their crates- and our do. It is far better for young or unreliable dogs to be safe and cozy in their crates than on their own and getting into danger. We have a yard and always took them outside to play and walked them etc when we got home. As soon as they were able to be trusted, we began letting them remain out for a few minutes alone, then gradually extended the time out. We then took the doors off the crates because they still enjoyed going in on their own. Don't forget to "babydog proof your house" include your kids rooms... Goldens will eat ANYTHING!! corncobs are deadly- be especially careful of your trash. and pill bottles :( and pumice stones ( dont ask) and knee highs... We have put the crates away to make more room in my laundry room as they were no longer going in the crates this summer. We were converts to crating with Bailey and then Cooper, and they are far better trained and happier and loving than the dogs we didn't crate years ago- no bad habits or behavior problems.It is all in how you handle it and consistency in training. They do go through adolescence and that is why training is so important especially through those years, if they are well trained early, then you can draw on that for their trying teen years( yeah they even whine like kids! but at least they don't want the car) You have a great attitude and you will be fine! btw if you have a petsmart near you they offer good training classes inexpensively. The trainer we had also volunteered to train the primates at the zoo. She had her own non animal related business but did the training on the side- her degree was in animal behavior! Look into clicker training - it is a lot of fun and very effective training tool. Sue HTH Sue

Em, I'm sorry I am late getting back, but I'm very glad to hear that you've had no further contact from him. I hope he has gotten the message and moved on. I really think you need to let your dh know how very upset you have been over this and how it has really affected your well being. He probably saw it in a whole different light and never realized that you have been stressing about it in a big way. I think he needs to know exactly how you feel and how this other man has intruded in a manner that leaves you feeling extremely vulnerable. These days, especially, you have to be very cautious with anyone who continually makes inappropriate approaches without encouragement. Your dh isn't worried about you wanting to fool around, but that is completely beside the point. It isn't about YOU at all; it's the unknown of what is going on with someone who is playing mind games with you on your cell phone. That's scary and deserves support. My situation was entirely different but nevertheless gives me something of an understanding of how you must feel. Before the days of cell phones and caller ID, I began getting very frightening phone calls. It began as a "wrong number" call. The guy made some joking statements to which I responded jokingly as well and then we both hung up. But he called again, and again, and again. At first, it was light-hearted banter and I am sorry to say that I did not hang up immediately, but kind of enjoyed the chat. But it didn't stop and it got weirder. He made it clearer with every call that he knew exactly who I was. Gradually the tone shifted to a menacing one. I would walk in my house to hear the phone ringing and he would say, "Welcome home, Cheri! I'm going to get you soon," or something like that. There was always a threat to "get" me or something similar. I was petrified. If I didn't pick up the phone he would leave a message. If I shut off my answering machine, he would call and call and call. If I unplugged my phone, I felt so scared and vulnerable anyway, as it was obvious from the things he said that he knew when I left my house, came home, even where I went sometimes. He also knew how to play the game because I couldn't get anything done to stop him. The police refused to put the thing on my phone that would trace calls because he never made a specific threat to kill me (is that ludicrous????). The phone company recorded the calls but wouldn't trace them either for the same reason. They wouldn't change my number because they were recording the calls and even if I could have gotten them to change it, they were going to charge me a fortune to do so! Can you believe that? I was a single mother. My kids had to spend every other week with their dad, so most of these calls came when I was alone and most of them were at night. My ex was/is very capable of having orchestrated the whole thing and I suspect he may have been behind it, but I had absolutely no way to prove it. The voice was not his. It just stopped, finally, but after months of being terrorized, I had a very hard time getting over it. It seemed like an innocent thing at first, but it quickly escalated to something way out of my control. I was also a lot younger and had been pretty much...well, brutalized, I guess you could say, in my marriage, so I just didn't have the personal resources at that time to tackle such a situation. Predators sniff out the vulnerable, so the best thing to do if you can manage it is to not appear vulnerable! Sorry to say that I don't exactly know how that's done.

Love - You said "He said fine, he would have to leave work early, didn't want to "inconvenience me" yada yada." and "I asked him what made him say that and he just said "well, I can't leave work early today." WOW. So I guess in his MAN MIND that is his way of acknowleding that I wouldn't do it." The way I see it is this was his way of making you feel guilty for being a SAHM, but unwilling to help him out with his kid. Don't give in!!!! Be strong in that HE needs to do what HE needs to do for HIS kid, and it wouldn't have to be this way if the (in the words of Sweeby) bat-sh*t crazy b*tch hadn't come in your home and punched you. Pseudo said "....I guess my point was if he puts BM before you ... if you had a child with him where would he draw the line ...." This is totally what I have been thinking for a few months now, but could never get the courage up to say anything. Where will he draw the line? Your DD has already been subjected to so much from this woman, and he's not even her father! How much would he put a child of his own through? Example: my friend has a DD with her DH who has 2 DDs with a crazy BM. The DH is a SAHD to the little one (DD with my friend) and would take her with him to pick up the other DDs on his weekend. It became a habit that the BM wouldn't be home at p/u time and wouldn't answer her phone. He would wait around for them to return (afraid that if he left he wouldn't get to see his DDs). One time, the little DD was in the car and carseat for 4 hours while he tried to track them down and waited for them. 4 hours! My friend finally said "You can wait around for 4 hours if you want, but you will not have MY daughter sitting in a carseat for 4 hours while you sit in your car outside their home." Basically, he had no problems putting BM ahead of his new DD. Remember...the squeaky wheel gets the grease. You just have to start squeaking louder than her. Jupiter said "I think that they need to see their ex's as good mothers (even when they clearly are not) maybe to somehow reassure themselves for when they are with her." So, so, so, true. My DH knows BM is a back-stabbing liar. But then he says stuff like "well, BM says it's SD's decision and she asks her all the time if she wants to visit". So why would he believe that one statement when he's caught her in so may lies before? The only thing that makes sense is he NEEDS to believe she's a good mother. Jupiter also said "I too run into arguments where he lets her slide on things that he wouldn't with me..I try to give him the example that if it was anyone else in his life he would have told them to go to h#$% because normally in life you don't do favors for people who don't do for you let alone someone who puts him down as a father..." and Love said "But it just totally goes against DH's overall nature, which is so frustrating." This is the issue. Which personality is the REAL one? I have this same problem with DH and I'm starting to think the way he is with HER is his personality when he's vulnerable and that scares the crap out of me because I guess I rarely ever see him vulnerable. I agree with FD. When I am flexible and accommodating with X, it is usually in the best interest of DS, and I do the work. I rarely (if ever) ask DH to do anything for DS, although he would be willing, because I feel like DS is my sole responsibility since I am the parent.

I had asked him if he meant NOLA, when he said Emeril's was right by their hotel, but I think not. NOLA is in the Quarter, right?

btw, the trade off is I am sending him pictures of my worthless cat. Well, the cat who was to be MINE, but has bonded with Dick and thinks I am useless... ;-)

Oh Maureen that is soooooooo funny especially for an engineer!

Clive hasn't gone that far yet but he does take pics of suppers he cooks for himself when I'm not here and sends them to me on email. Cracks me right up!

Well, one thing is Dick does like his camera and taking pictures. 2nd, the man loves food. 3rd, he loves me.... So if I'm not there to see it, I know he's letting me know what I'm missing.

And 'trained' is your word!! Oh boy, do I know that's not really possible. He's a TAURUS. He's converted, like rice.;-)

Hey don't be knockin' Tauruses now. Am one...married to one....sighhhhh... Neither of us is trainable unless we want to be. I have, however, 'converted' him to understanding that starting dinner before I get home is a good thing.

That's so cool. And your post made me think of when we went to dinners at Canny Camp and the looks on all those faces when 5 or 6 campers jumped up from the table and took pics of the plates, lol.

For those who weren't at the 2006 (?) Canny Camp, Katie means that several of us who jumped up at the same time, walked from our 2? 3? tables and took pictures at each table. It was hysterical, but the owners and staff took us in stride. ;-)

Boy Katie, your house if full of double b*ll sh*t. !!! ;-)

A little less interesting tonight. ...finished with the conference and everybody declared it a winner. I had soup and salad for dinner tonight and then ate my Emeril's Banana Cream Pie to celebrate. Sounds like hotel food to me...blah.

Great story and I would love to see the pictures. This really made me laugh because when my husband was out of the country the last time, I told him I wanted to see everything that he ate and hear all about it. So he did as instructed including a picture that I was like - what is this and where is this? Turns out he was in McDonald's and took a picture to show me what it was like in that country. He did as instructed! LOL!
