e-mail attachment won't open.

Hi,

I am having a problem opening up an email attachment. The first time I noticed that they sent it using power point and I don't have power Point. I emailed them back and the next time they sent it using Media player and I still can't open it. I don't understand that because I do have media player. This is what it tells me.

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the folder options control panel. What does that mean? I have opened this type of file before and it opens in the media player. I do have Quick Time but it has never interfered with the media player before. I am at a loss. Did they do something wrong or is it my computer? I don't know how to show the attachment to you or I would send it.

Ok maybe I can do this.

The attachment shows the media player icon. Next it says

count_your_blessings.wmv (6.63MB)

Is there a way that I can find out what version of media player that I have or does it matter?

Open Office will open PowerPoint presentations just fine.

To open the WMV file, copy it to your PC, then right click it and choose open with and select Media Player.

Thank you so much for your help. I did as you directed and it worked beautifully.

I do have one question about this subject. Why was I able to open other attachments using media player without having to download it to my PC? Were they a different type of file using Media Player?

Now I have a question about Open Office.

If I would download Open Office would it over ride Microsoft Office and become my default office program?

Regarding the BCC when you click 'Forward' you then click on the tiny word 'To' beside where you place your address and your address book drops down listed on the left side and on the right side are spots for 'To', 'CC' and 'BCC'. If you want everyone to have a copy highlight the first address, hold down the 'Shift' button and tap 'End' - beside the Delete button - then click the BCC tab. To select a few highlight the first one, hold down the CTRL (or Control on some keyboards) and click on those you want to have the email. Release the buttons on completion and click BCC. In both cases click OK to send the addresses into the address bar.

How about right click the folder, find "Send To" > Compressed (zipped) folder Whatever you put inside a zip folder will be the same as before, when it is taken out and opened after it's journey.

Absolutely do not open any e-mail from an unknown source. I would even like to take it a step farther and suggest never open a forward even if you "know" the sender. Forwards have always been a classic way of sharing viruses be they generated from a user's compromised Addressbook or generated in the wild. If there is a need to accept forwards from certain individuals ask them to delete the fwd from the subject line before doing so. By doing this it will show you that the e-mail is intended and valid. If you are using OE or Windows Mail turn off the preview pane. This suggestion has been recommended for years now as critters began being delivered in the code of the e-mail and jpg pictures long ago. DA

What was the suffix on the original email you could not open? Was it .pps - .ppt - or was there an additional x on the end of either suffix?

You cannot simply change a suffix, all that does is ruin the file entirely.

If you have MS Office you do not need Open Office. However if it is an older version (97, 2000 or 2003) and you receive a PowerPoint 2007 presentation it may not work. You can download the stand alone player from Microsoft from the link below.

Take a look here and see if that cures your problem.

PowerPoint presentations are among the best emails you can get in my opinion. The program was and still is basically a program for the office environment but many have found it an excellent way to show off family or scenery photos.

I personally always download any powerpoint files to my pc and then right click them and scan them with my antivirus and antimalware programs before I open them, they are quite often used to carry infections.
