Additional Memory

Hi folks,

I have a 10 year old HP Pavilion a420n with X-P Home,SP-3. It is a 32 bit system with 1000 GB of memory. I would like to upgrade to 4 GB of memory. I have two memory slots. Where can I find the clock speed of this machine? Also, some of the DDR memory is non-ecc, is that prefered or not.

These specs suggest the maximum RAM is 2 gigs for that model computer so unless there is a BIOS update you cannot go to 4 gigs.

Also this is a quite old computer with slow components by today's standards and you might be disappointed with the upgrade. SDRAM is harder to find and older memory tends to become very expensive compared to great prices for the newest memory types out there.

There were 23 FEMA lots in New Hartford after the flood of 2008 ... people in these homes could either not afford to rebuild or have enough insurance to rebuild or just gave up on another flooded home...it means they took a 'buy-out' from FEMA ...so those lots can never be built on again...this was a 500-yr flood & affected many homes that never ever have flooded...but many of those that took the buy-out had flooded before ...but not on the main levels like this 2008 flood! So, when FEMA buys you out ...say like $25,000 or something I think may have been an avg (I don't know for sure)...then it becomes property of the city but cannot be built on to live in or have a business. The lots we are restoring have been this Vets Memorial, 4 Season Perennial Garden, Town Square Gazebo lot & a Community Gardens lot. We have written grants, raised money ...many of it donations & that's how we are doing it...we are wearing down as it is many retired people working long & hard...but we promised our community that we would have the 3 lots done by 1st week of June for the local yearly 'Beaver Creek Days.' This is what he got me - from the box: SMC Networks Wireless Cardbus Adapter "Supports blazing wireless communcation at up to 108 MBPS." Advanced Wireles Security, includes Wi-Fi Protected Access. For Home and Small Office Networking. "Share your existing cable connection with multiple computers by addind a high performance Barriade g Router with USB Print server" Don't know about the last part, I could live without the print server, I just want to be able to work and browse in other rooms in the house besides my basement where the cable connection is. As for the memory card - I went to the "Crucial" RAM Scanner Web site as recommended by Zep516 on a previous post that I found through the search menu. I clicked on the Crucial System Scanner, and it said: Maximum Memory Capacity: 1024MB Currently Installed Memory: 256MB Available Memory Slots: 1 Number of Banks: 2 Dual Channel Support: No CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel CPU Family: Mobile Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.40GHz Model 2, Stepping 9 CPU Speed: 2392 MHz Each memory slot can hold DDR PC2700,DDR PC3200 with a maximum of 512MB per slot.* So I couldn't remember the exact number of what I have, but what I have is 256 MB of currently installed memory and one empty "slot."

ram is one of the easiest things to upgrade on a pc, most people can tackle this task. I usually buy my ram from newegg.com they have all the name brands and great prices, I have Kingston in most of my computers. How to Install RAM to a Desktop Computer be sure to ground yourself you can use a grounding arm band which you can buy anyplace you buy ram, always a neat thing to have handy if you ever want to do anything inside the pc including cleaning it. Also you want to be sure you put the ram stick in the right direction, do not force it, it will go in easily the right way, it should click in and the locking arms on the ends of the slot will lock shut, make sure they do that. I do unplug mine from the power also. "Memory" in a tablet functions much like a hard drive in a computer. It is where applications, pictures, videos, music, etc. are stored. Depending on the tablet, the memory is a fixed size so you're stuck with whatever you buy. There are some tablets that provide for addition memory via a card like those used in digital camera.

Thanks for your help. The Crucial site showed I could go as high as 4GB as this is a 32 bit system (X-P Home, however only 3.5 would be usable) It would cost 60 bucks to double the existing memory, and like Owbist said, it may not be worth the effort. After all the use and pleasure this machine has given me the past 10 years, perhaps it's time to consider another computer.

If it is financially suitable for you, I agree if not now then down the road the system should be replaced. With W7 available you are currently two O/S behind along with numerous service packs. And of course, W8 is reportedly on track for this time next year. The technical and service gap is ever widening with you lagging farther and farther behind.

I know how loyal one can be to a system as I went from Win98 to Vista all the while kicking and screaming. I was perfectly fine with Win98. I was using XP at work and reading the Help files regularly along with maintaining a regular vigil on the forums. It wasn't enough though. I had to upgrade to be anywhere near current just in knowledge alone.

I am not a user who has to have every toy or whistle, nor do I have to be always current. However, I have learned there is more to gain by moving forward with systems than standing in place. This Vista system, which is outstanding regardless of the undue criticism it received, will be replaced by a W8 system next year.
