iPod Help - Transferring to new computer

I have about 35G of music and podcasts on my desktop PC and in an 80 G iPod Classic. I just purchased a laptop and would like to transfer the contents of the iPod into this new beast.

Having said that, I don't want to leave the desktop out of the update loop regarding the number of podcasts I download daily.

Can I 1) - use the iPod to safely transfer the entire contents to the new computer?

- will iTunes allow the use of two computers to be the 'home' for one iPod?

Both computers are PC one with XP, the other has Vista.

Any assistance gratefully received.

Do you have any DRM protected content that you purchased from itunes? That may make a difference in how you do this.

You can copy protected content to more than one PC, but there is a limit (I forget what the limit is). You can simply copy the contents of "My Documents\My Music\iTunes" from your current PC to the new one to start. Since you can have the content on 2 PCs, this works for the protected content, also.

If you're using itunes, you can use the ipod with both PCs, but I don't think you can use the ipod to transfer between the two PCs (at least not readily). You can use it with both PCs. To do so, when you connect it, on the ipod summary page, check the Manually manage music and videos button. Then, when you want to copy to the ipod, you drag from the left bar to the ipod. If you click help and search for manually manage, you'll find detailed instructions.

You can also check the box to enable disk use, but itunes doesn't copy files to the ipod with the same names as it uses in Windows, so that won't be much help, I don't think.

Many thanks, bpgreen. I will digest that info and give it a try. I understand that the iPod 'loves' only one machine. I learned some time ago that it will download the library it is plugged into - I nearly lost some irreplaceable cuts.
I have about 15 hours of iTunes purchases and, to my knowledge, no WMA files left. I started my iPod journey with WMA but went to iTunes mainly for the podcasts.
There is no 'illegal' content - all from CDs but I no longer have access to about 5G.

Looks like most computers now come with Vista installed and optionally offer a CD to downgrade to XP, which will be discontinued about mid year unless microsoft extends its life. Any programs you want to transfer have to be reloaded new from their CD's or web installs. Personal files can be easily burnt to CD/DVD/Flash drive,,, takes some thought as to whats worth keeping ........ or you can network the computers and just copy or move anything over quickly. If you don't want to network put both on a router or switch and use msn messenger or most any of the online chat messengers fairly simple and quick to send files. Lots of ways to move files across a network.

Have you purchased songs and/or video that are protected? If so, you'll also want to make sure you decommission the old PC AFTER transferring the songs and videos. With protected content, there's a limit to how many devices it can be copied to. I don't think decommission is the right word, but it's something like that. It frees that license so you can transfer to another computer. One way I've done it is to just copy the itunes folder in My Music to an external drive, then copy that to the new computer.

You have to have ITunes on your computer. Once that's done, it's a cake-walk. Put your audio CD into the computer's CD drive. I-tunes should open automatically. One of the features (under FILE) is "import audio CD". Click on that, and it'll transfer the contents of the CD to your I-tunes folder. Then, when you "synch" your I-pod with the computer, the new "files" (audio files) will automatically be added to your I-pod. Easy as pie. :)

I should have given more detail. The Win7 is probably not legitimate. I bought the old desk top several years ago on craigslist. It appeared to have been used in a business environment. It had/has Win7 Ultimate, but it was originally an ME machine. It also had MS Office. After ~1 year, I got messages that the MS Office needed renewing. Eventually, I went to my computer guy, who I guess has purchased bulk copies of various office sweets etc and also upgrades and retires old computers, presumably/perhaps moving their liscenses. He got Office reset. Last year, I had a problem needing his help and he told me that there were now indications that the Win7 ultimate was potentially not legal, but that he didn't have any copies of Ultimate. I'm not sure why he didn't set up a normal Win7 that I assume he has. A month or two after this, I began getting the Windows not real messages with the black screen.
