Gadget gurus; 'Help!' CD Audio books to load to iPod???

I need help from the electronic gurus, please!

Santa Baby left an iPod Touch, 64GB, 4-something, in my stocking. It's a darling little shiny thing, (my gypsy soul loves little shiny things!) but I know next to nothing about iPods.

First, I need to know how to take my scores of unabridged audio books on CD, load them into the computer, and then transfer them into the iPod.

Wes tried doing one book tonight and it took hours. The audio books track every three minutes. He was trying to combine all the tracks into one long book, or at least group the tracks by chapter.

Does anyone have an idea how to do this?

There are many apple ipod forums if you do a google search. Someone there should know how. I've done music cd's but never an audio book.

Audio books have to be in the correct format (and, yes, there's more than one format for audio books) in order for the iPod to play them.

And you wouldn't transfer them onto the iPod into the same folder where your music is stored. "Audio books" should be a separate folder.

My #1 favorite is black gospel. Anyone else familiar w/ Gospel at Colonus? I haven't heard kd lang for a few years now, but she had one of the best voices around, when you're talking pure vocal talent. Did anyone see her on the Grammys awhile back when she did Roy Orbison's "Crying"? Blew the roof off. As for Brokeback (Keith, rest in peace), my theory - a lot of straight guys are comforted by Queer Eye, etc. and uneasy about Brokeback because (shudder) in the movie, YOU CAN'T TELL BY LOOKING if a guy's gay. If that guy's gay and looks like a "regular" guy, and EYE look like a regular guy..... well, we gotta keep that trash away from the young people. :) DH is in an original heavy rock/light metal band and also in a rock cover band, so I hear loads of that music and like lots of it. qylliam - The Chieftans - are you talking about the Irish group? I got to hear them one time in concert. They were great. Anyone else familiar w/ Sweet Honey in the Rock? A capella group that does original music, black gospel, reggae, etc. Arthur, many of the band names are new to me, too. What genre is Cake? "Classic" country is terrific - Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline - rarely the crossover stuff. Some bluegrass. Shady Character - who does Bollywood *style*? If your mom qualifies for the state-run program, she will likely receive, free of charge, a machine similar to one of these in the link. Our program here in AR (Arkansas State Library for the Blind) sent both and asked my mother to choose which one suited her better. Large Braille buttons make them a lot easier to use if you're visually impaired. They will mail you, also free of charge, the audio books that she requests and ours even mailed some that they thought she might enjoy, because we filled out a questionnaire with her preferences. Well, to answer the question, I listen to books through the Talking Books program that is run by the US Library of Congress National Library Service. I do all of my "reading" this way and have done so for the last 25 years. I'm very used to books on tape. Soon they will be converting to a digital format. Of course, being this kind of reader means that I don't often get to take part in discussions of books on boards like this one. I can't just order up a book from the library and expect to get it in time for the discussion. Sometimes I wait many years for a requested book. Just the other day I got one I'd requested 12 years ago, for instance. On the other hand, I get to keep the books for up to a year. I know of no other library with such a generous policy. Back in my student days, we often had to get library books for 24 hours only--and race back with them to avoid stiff fines.

I can't exist without them, although years ago I thought they were worthless! I had always figured that it made no sense for me to listen to a book since I'm a pretty fast reader, and it would waste my time. (And thank goodness it's one of the few things that I haven't gotten considerably slower at!) But then i realised that I could go for power walks or prune bushes, weed, bake cookies, dust and run errands while reading! Or rather listening to a book. It's been wonderful. The biggest problem now is that BOT are going the way of vinyl. And books on CD are a pain, because you can't save your place, going between house and car or portable player. And they SKIP! So after much help from everyone here I'm going to be getting an MP# player to down load audio books from the library. Haven't gotten the nerve to actually do it, since that means having to learn a new device but I will do it soon. Here is a link that might be useful: Best player for audio books

I use ITunes to convert my CDs to mp3 files to put on my player (not an ipod). I would think it would be much the same. It does take some time, but not hours. And some CDs are mp3 CDs, meaning that there is no converting to do, just transfer the files. And I use Windows Media Player to add them to my ZEN.

You have to have ITunes on your computer.

Once that's done, it's a cake-walk.

Put your audio CD into the computer's CD drive. I-tunes should open automatically. One of the features (under FILE) is "import audio CD". Click on that, and it'll transfer the contents of the CD to your I-tunes folder.

Then, when you "synch" your I-pod with the computer, the new "files" (audio files) will automatically be added to your I-pod.

Easy as pie. :)

I do as Rosemary suggested, but you also need to go down to the bottom of the left column of your iTunes library and make a "playlist" for each cd. As each disk is put into iTunes, drag it to (title of book) disk 1 etc. I do it all the time with library books when I travel.
