Right now I am going to let it sit for a few days to acclimate to room temperature, it was like a hunk of ice when it was delivered.

It has--

Vista Ultimate w/Service Pk 1 (64-bit)

Intel Core 2 Duo processor 3.0GHz

4GH DDR2-800MHz duel channel SDRAM 4x1024

750GB 7200 rpmSATA 3Gb/s hard drive

My question is this, is there any advice, warning, caution, or general help anyone would like to offer in my effort to set up and transfer all my files and info from old computer (windows xp) to new system. There is a program already installed on Vista called "WET" (Windows Easy Transfer), with a printed flyer giving pretty detailed instructions.

I may be in way over my head hear, but maybe if I take it very slow and cautious, I will be alright, or should I not try it and try to find someone that can do all that.

I know you guys and gals have probably done this set up and transfer thing many times but this will be a first for me.

Another question I have already is, -- I have the new Photoshop 7 that has to be installed on the Vista. Right now I have Photoshop 5 installed on my Windows xp. Should I install the Photoshop 7 program on the new Vista BEFORE I do any transfer from Windows xp and the Photoshop 5 program. Will the files even transfer to a newer program??

Thanks in advance for any suggestions....or any of those helpful connections to information sites.

No real suggestions except be sure that any programs you install are compatible with the 64bit system. Much software is still for 32 bit OS.

Sounds like a real screamer you have there. Good luck with it.

I don't think you'll be able to transfer programs and have them work.
Programs and Software need to be installed on a system.
You'll be able to transfer photos and documents.
Might want to invest in a flash or thumb drive to plug into the old computer usb and put all that you want to save, then remove the flash safely and plug into the usb on the new computer.
Never used Windows Easy Transfer.
Nice machine, she'll fly.

Hi all, Just mowed again today and I noticed a couple of things that I missed the first time I mowed and wondered what you guys thought. I've been cutting with the deck height at 2.75 inches and I started out with the deck already lowered and when I engaged the PTO, it almost snubbed the engine. I never had that happen with my L120. I tried a second time engaging the PTO with the deck in the fully raised position first and then it seemed to engage fine without snubbing and then I lowered the deck. Just wondering if this is normal. Also I noticed what sounded like a lot of vibration from either the deck or the blades as I was mowing. It didn't seem to affect anything, but it sure seemed odd to me for a brand new lawn tractor. Am I being too picky? Is this normal or should I call my dealer and ask him about these two issues. Thanks for your help. Deerefan67

Additional information including topic updates should be kept on the original thread. A chat format can leave members confused, slow down contributing and learning, and delay problem resolution. As an example, I had no recollection of the topic so as a result I had to do a forum search using your alias as the keyword. I then had to scroll through the offerings to find the on-point original thread to review. I took the liberty of tagging the original thread for member convenience. Enjoy your new system. New HP question

gary - Yep, gotcha - just replacing the HP plus inside coil, the trane is used as the AH and works like a dream. The trane here was installed in 2004 strictly as backup to our Jotul Oslos (we've heated primarily with wood for many years now). Back then, propane around 90 cents, so it made sense at the time. Now at 2.19-2.69 currently (but it has popped up at times even higher), we are thankful that the only propane appliances are that trane unit backup and our gas range. Our electric rates are cheap; had we known more about propane, or that it could leap in price like this, we would have just gone for another Trane HP, despite the quotes being 3-4 times the cost of the Lennox 13HPD-060 R-22 we purchased instead. I didn't think Lennox was a bad brand; still believe our problems are likely installation issues that could have all been avoided. We opted for a less expensive HP because we'd already spent quite a bit with a set-up that is for sure no longer a cheap way to go (the gas part, not the wood, which yes is a blessing, even as we get older - come from a long line of elderly wood splitting fools:). P.S. I appreciate the advice re outlining exactly what they intend to provide with exactness in writing. We were told that while our old HP was under a 2 year labor warranty, the new warranties were 3 years - however, once they agreed to replace it, they are now not certain which labor policy will apply (this is large company with offices in multiple cities). We'll be digging into whatever that means, too. While I am not entirely sure what has gone on, there is no reason not to do a more careful deal this time; and learn whatever small amount we can in the process.

Installed new garbage disposal today

I have replaced a disposal, faucets, ceiling fans & lights, outlets and switches, gaskets in the outdoor faucets, and even a dishwasher - but on that last one I had to call for help because I lacked the specific tool needed to unfasten something (20 years ago so I don't quite remember what). I have an old household repair book from Reader's Digest that still applies to the wiring and such in my 79 year old house. YouTube videos are great but often I can't find repairs for older stuff. My current "disaster" although that is a little bit of an exaggeration - I picked up an old vacuum cleaner that wasn't performing well. It powered on but as I suspected, was very clogged everywhere with pet hair and debris. Unfortunately the motor was also packed with hair so I had to get into that compartment to clean it out - and when I had it all reassembled, it no longer powered on. Disassembled it again and found a wire pinched; every other connection seems fine. So I suspect the pinch fractured the wire. I am going to try to figure that out, since it isn't a very old unit and should work well if I can fix it.

Don't be paying others to do these tasks. They can be part of the learning curve moving from XP to Vista. This is not a race, you can move forward at your leisure. If you are a nervous type person always remember you can walk away for a few minutes or more at any time. Just be sure to click Cancel rather than OK at those points in the process. Cancel stops things, OK approves the last move.

You will not find 'My Documents' as they are now just 'Documents'. Same with My Pictures etc. Other things seem to have been needlessly moved but a few days of playing around will soon acclimatise you to Vista.

Decide if you need the installed anti virus, it probably has a free 90 day intro. Vista firewall is 2 way so you can stay with that. Microsoft also provide an anti malware program on Vista, I think it is called Windows Defender and it seems to do the job. Friends have had it on their new HP since May and have stayed clean so it must be a capable program.

Remember at some point sooner than later that you need to burn a set of recovery disks. My friend's HP required 3 DVDs to accomplish the task and you can only do this once. (I wonder why the restriction?)

Enjoy your new machine. You will have to work very hard to fill that humongous hard drive.

Before you install any of your programs on your new computer, go to the website for each program and check for any Vista and 64 bit instructions to properly load the programs. Some may have you install a patch before loading a program. If you do this first you should have no problems.

This is just what I was hoping for, lots of info and input form you experts.....thanks

owbist, your advice was very encouraging, and I do plan to take plenty of time with setting up this new computer. I am not a nervous type person, but I am a cautious person when it comes to something like this....and yes I am bad with that "cancel" button.

I purposely did not have any anti-virus installed (like Norton of McAfee) because I am not using it now, I am using what you and others have said that you use, Anti-Malware, Avg 8.0, Super Anti-Spyware, CCleaner and the like. I will have to see what I need, once I get into the set up.

camp56, good point, I'll do that.

randy_ca....you say not to use the program "windows easy transfer" but you don't say why not to use it. I am not a computer savvy person, I can get through a lot of stuff after much studying and research but if there is a program with detailed written instructions then why not use it? You must know something about it that you are not pleased with but I know nothing about it, so clue me in.

I do have an external hard drive, and I will have everything on it in case of a disaster.

What I meant was I've never used the easy transfer.
Probably will work as advertised.

Only one suggestion as I run Vista Ultimate 64bit as well. I would suggest Avast (free version). There have been recent reports of AVG 8 series causing some problems. Never had any problems nor viri while using Avast for the last few years. Nice machine

To transfer files, not programs, from my old computer to my new one, I used an adapter case (found at Best Buy, ect for about $30) where I installed the hard drive from the old one and connected via cable to a USB port on the new one. Using Windows Explorer, I then used Copy and Paste commands to put the files on my new hard drive.
Much faster than using a flash drive, depending on the size of the drive and the size of the files.
