Problems with windows defender & ad aware

For some reason, windows defender is getting turned off when I shut down my computer. I have to manually turn it on when I start the computer, then it will stay on until I shut down again.

My other problem is w/ ad aware. I can't seem to get it to run the scans. I will start the scan and it seems to be scanning, but it never gets finished. I end up just stopping it because it is taking forever. I have even tried reinstalling it, and that didn't seem to work.

Is there maybe a virus that is doing this? I do virus scans on a weekly basis and nothing has been found on that scan. I would appreciate any thoughts any of you may have on these problems!! Thank you!!

You don't happen to have Windows Live OneCare installed do you? That will turn off defender.

You might be better off replacing ad aware with Malwarebytes or SuperAntispyware and run your scans with these programs.

zep is right ad aware was once a good program but now there are superior programs to use that are free, the 2 he listed are the best, here are some links for you.
Run the malwarebytes full scan after you update it and see if it finds anything.

I think some of you are being a bit harsh on Bush. Yeah, go ahead and tax parents with over two kids. That would really help things...NOT!! Then we will have a shrinking young population and a large elderly base and guess who taxes will go sky high? The young supporting all the old. It is hard enough to raise kids, don't make it any harder. People are having less children in general. In some parts of Europe they are having negative population growth, which isn't good for their long term economy. As far as the SUVs, that is one thing I do agree with the environmentalists about. They are wasteful, esp when you see a single person driving them. Just wait till we have an oil shortage. But the avg American must really like them, I think we are in teh minority, because look at the sales of them. They are everywhere!! I do agree Americans could do a much better job at conservation. I turn off my sprinkler system when it rains whereas a lot of people don't do that. I turn off the A/C when it gets cool enough to open windows. I buy drought tolerant plants. I turn off the lights when I leave the room. I have sedans rather than big SUVs. I think we are royally spoiled too. But this has been going on a long time, more time than Bush has been in office. Also, keep in mind, that environmentalist will criticize Bush no matter what he does. Also, I am not even sure I believe some of the things the environmentalist say. I have heard that some of it is false and not true. I listened to a radio talk show and they had a Danish professor on it who used to be a member of all the big environmental groups and he set out to disprove the conservative viewpoints nad was unable. Found out that a lot of the environmentalist thoughts were wrong and false. I think sometimes, they are scare tactics. Remember, droughts have been around forever an so have floods and terrible storms...................

Minnie you asked me this question. not to steal the thread thirdfrt but what is your opinion on Bazooka? I've had that for centuries it seems TIA To be honest with you I am unfamiliar with the software Bazooka but, I did look it up to see what program you were talking about. I have never used Bazooka and so I am unable to give you an opinion on it. Sorry. Maybe there is someone here that is more knowledgeable about the program that can give you an opinion on it. not to steal the thread thirdfrt Minnie, I don't feel like you stole the thread at all, unfortunately I was not able to answer your question and anyone who is knowledgeable about Bazooka is more than welcome to answer your question on this thread, I don't mind at all. For those of you who mentioned Malwarebytes, Superantispyware and Spyware Blaster, I have them on this OS. I have had Spyware Blaster for quite awhile now and I downloaded the other two last year. I am very pleased with these programs and appreciate the help that was given to me so that I could download them. I use to have AdAware when it was a good program and thought I would take the chance with the current AdAware and I have become very disappointed with it. You are right it is not the same and that is why I want to remove it. I have given my son the links for the programs that you have recomended and for the removal of AdAware. It just seemed odd that we were both experiencing the same problem with our firewalls and like I said that was the only thing that we had in common on our computers. My sister and Nephew both had problems and they uninstalled AdAware and their computers started working correctly. About Irfanview, I think I will remove the old one rather than write over it and start fresh. I don't need anymore conflicts. One last thing I downloaded Auslogics and was surprised how well it did. My computer was really starting to act up and at first I didn't think I was going to be able to run a check disk. I messed with it and finally got it to work and after I ran the check disk I used the Auslogics Disk Defrag and my computer came back to life so to speak. "Smiles" Well I think I have covered everything, again thanks to all who responded to this thread. You have been very helpful and I sure do appreciate the help. thirdfrt!!!

For what it's worth, I haven't been able to update my Adaware software for about a month. After about 5% of the download, the connection fails. A problem on their end might be corrupting your download. Admittedly, since I've been using the same computer for years and have never had trouble downloading updates when I open the program, I assume it's them and not me, and haven't looked into it. Surprised though that it hasn't been corrected.

Microsoft Security Essentials disables Windows Defender. It's actually running if you use that program but appears disabled.

On your desktop you might right click Computer or MyComputer and select Manage .. then in Services look and see if Windows Defender is set to Automatic.
If it is set automatic and still not starting the simple lazy thing I might do is maybe use copy&paste the shortcut you are starting defender with - and then go to Programs off the start button and you will see a folder called StartUp. Right click and open that folder by clicking Explore - then paste it into there.

ravencajun: Thanks so much for the links to the programs, I plan on switching to them.

mikie: Windows Defender is set up to automatic, so I tried your cut & paste idea, we'll see how that works.

To all of you, thanks so much for your help. I always know this is the place to come for great ideas!! Will get back w/ you after I get those programs set up and see what happens!

Do you have AVG? I ask as my Vista system started doing the same thing following the AVG upgrade (not update) before last. It really didn't bother me to have to manually restart Defender as my system is only rebooted as a result of a software installation/removal or an O/S update requirement. Other than that it is always on.

Since the current AVG upgrade (not update) it stopped.

zep & ravencajun: I got those programs installed and running and luv them. It was great actually being able to run a scan, and the programs are very user friendly, which is great also! Thanks again for all your help!!

damccoy: I do have AVG, so that is probably the problem - thanks for you help as well!!

I had to shut off Windows Defender after I upgraded AVG, because the WD prevented it from working...

I'd like to download the malwarebytes, but it says it's compatible with Vista 32 bit - what if you have Vista 64 bit computer?

Dee, I run vista 64 and have both Malwarebytes and MS anti-virus programs and both run very well on my machine. MS program windows essential is great check it out BUT you can only have one anti-virus program running at a time.Personally I would drop any other anti virus and go with MS. You can even do a test on line with a fake virus to see if works for you.

you can use malwarebytes on 64systems mine runs fine on my 32 and 64 OS.
No problem having the malwarebytes and superantispyware both on the pc along with your antivirus programs since they are on demand scanners and do not run full time, what you can not do is run 2 full time antivirus programs at the same time. Just always remember to update the programs before running the scans.
The other program I suggest to everyone is spywareblaster, you do not have to run any scans just open it once a week and hit the update button then hit the enable all protection button so the shield turns green and you are good to go. It works in the back ground protecting you.
