We did the 'real' celebration yesterday - family dinner at Drago Centro, our current favorite downtown restaurant, then to see 'Fela!'. My kids wanted to switch their salmon or steaks for my butternut squash angliotti, LOL. Picky DS#2 decided he really liked fresh burrata and tried everything on everyone's plate, except the baby beets. He even had the roasted brussels sprouts and didn't spit it out, ha. DH and I shared a small carafe of really good wine (didn't want to fall asleep during the show). Traffic was light for LA, so we had plenty of time to relax!

I'm very late to this party, but still wanted to wish the evil one a happy birthday! I've been busy and haven't been on CF much the last couple of months, so I've missed a lot. I've kept up with the Saints, though, and I'm not blaming Jessy for that loss on Sunday. They had nothing to lose or gain by winning, so they didn't really try. Jessy, keep wearing your Black and Gold for future games --- the rest of the games are going to matter!

Thanks everyone, I chuckled through all the posts! Vegas was a good diversion considering I was traveling with a picky 13YO and a Depression era survivor (think 'cheap'), LOL. That means we didn't eat out extravagantly. Come to think of it, we ate out twice - once at a local restaurant (Middle Eastern, Paymon's) and we grabbed two pizzas at Metro Pizza. Two for one so of course that lasted us...oy. Ya know, sometimes you do things for other reasons...this trip was so my dad could spend time with my kids. I really really wanted to do a Vegas buffet, the Wynn, but the lines were too long. Next time, eh? We did see two shows, Spamalot and Penn and Teller. Other things on the agenda were, as I said before, the Hoover Dam, EthelM factory (eh), the Atomic Museum, Fremont Street Experience, the water fountains at the Bellagio (I sent DH a picture of the Dale Chihuly glass ceiling, he was jealous), and we drove through Red Rock Canyon. We did make it to the top of the Stratosphere. The Pinball museum was great, the kids spent $20 over an hour of time, cheaper than gambling! Oh and I did get a little slot machine time (no tables, oh well) at the airport. I put a buck into a 5 cent slot machine and played until I won $2.50, then cashed out! The only thing I missed for ME was the International Food Market...discussion link below. Maybe Sharon will make it there in March and report back! We stayed at a great place for families, off strip: the Westgate Flamingo resort. We had a small two bedroom condo with a kitchen and washer/dryer. Location was GREAT - a Food4less market half a block away for supplies. $111/night from Expedia. Recommended!!! Here is a link that might be useful: International food market on chowhound

Oh boy have I been away for a long time! I'd like to get back, I promise I will make more of an effort....empty nest isn't as boring as I thought it would be! Happy Birthday to Elery (and Cookingrvc as well!) Yasou, I worked most of the morning on house stuff, then took the family to Culver City for dinner and a show. Annie no new toys....but Yasou and I are thinking of teaching a cooking class together in the spring! Good to see all my CF peeps, reminds me of the good times and get-togethers. Thanks everyone! I am heading home today from San Diego with my family and dad - we did the zoo yesteday, and there is a kimono exhibit at one of the Balboa park museums today that I hear is amazing. When we got here on Thursday DH and DS took pictures at Cabrillo monument but it was pretty fogged in.

For my bday dinner last night I choose a popular place (i.e. PACKED) in Little Italy called Buon Apetito. I just got two appetizers - eggplant parmesan, and a ball of burratta on spinach - because I was saving room for a bakery down the street that had the most amazing Italian desserts - cannoli to die for. It was a fabulous place and I recommend it to all who visit!

On our way home today we will try to visit with one of my mom's best friends who is in a retirement home. I'm sure she'll want to see the kids. We all miss my mom - yesterday I wore something (a vest from China) that she game me.

It was a good weekend, the kids start school Monday, I'll be glad to go home!

Sorry this is so late. We were dragged off to Sun Valley to celebrate a friend's 60th. It looked beautiful but was way too cold for us non- skiers. The birthday sleigh ride and dinner were magical but I,m really glad to be home and warm.

Hey latecomers - I'll take all birthday wishes! I'm saving this thread, you all have me cracking up. Bunnyman I'll see if DS #2 still has the cannnoli picture on his phone. We walked to the dessert cafe before dinner to scope it out while DH was looking for parking in the very busy area.
