cannot connect Via wirelee with HP laptop

I have an HP laptop that uses windows vista the home version, when I try to connect to internet get the message saying this page cannot be displayed. Also get message saying the wireless capability of this computer is not turned on. I have tried everything, a reboot CD which has the complete edition of windows vista. When I try to run this CD nothing happens.. I had the laptop repaired a few months ago, it worked haphazardly for a couple of weeks and the above message started appearing, plus I then got a message saying this version of windows is counterfit. I was charged for a new hard drive. I do not want to deal any more with the repair place. What can I do to fix this. Also I know my wireless router is working ok as my wifes laptop also and HP works fine via wireless

Sometimes my wireless Vista desktop is cranky about connecting. It may take as long as 10 min. I think part of the problem may be interference from other networks around me. Sometimes changing the wireless channel helps.

Are you sure that the wireless card is turned on? Some HPs have the on/off switch for wireless near the top of the keyboard around the F5 or F6 keys, a placement easily touched and can be accidentally turned off. If the wireless radio light is orange, it is turned off. Touch the light that looks like a wireless tower, turn it off and back on.

Did the wireless switch get turned off accidentally? That's the easiest fix. I had to Google for the information on starting wireless in Vista since I have very little hands on with Vista. You need to start wireless service. Open Control Panel, change view to icons. Open Administrative Tools and double click on services. Find the one labelled Wired AutoConfig and double click it. If properties show as anything other than automatic, change to automatic. Stop and start the service using the buttons on that dialog box. Click OK. Repeat these steps with WLAN AutoConfig. Close the windows and attempt to connect to the network again.

I am sorry, I am obviously not as computer saavy as you are. Pardon my ignorance and stupidity. I have a router WIRED to my main desktop computer. My old laptop was WIRELESSLY hooked up to it. I don't know how to WIRELESSLY connect my new laptop to my own router, I have never done it before. I need someone to walk me through the steps of finding my WIRELESS source. A "source" is what the computer calls the choice of routers that show up on a list of routers near me (all through Verizon) that I can hookup to, but I do not want to do that, I want to use my own non-Verizon router which is not listed when I try to connect. I hope this helps you, and again I apologize for being so stupid with this. Whatever happened to the people on this forum who understood that not all of us are computer literate and that is the reason we come here: for answers, not to be belittled by those who are more knowledgeable?

jean001- I understand what you're relaying about your conversation. However, if it's backwards compatible to XP, it means that it works with Vista. Now if he is telling you that he can either have it set to handle Vista connections, or XP and Win7 connections, but not all of them at the same time, maybe that's so based on some odd configuration he has set up. I have my own $60 wireless router running four computers (and a Roku box and a printer): one computer is XP, two are Vista, and one is Win 7. They all worked immediately after I put in the keys for my security settings, and I did nothing to configure any of them specifically. I've never had a problem connecting. And I have friends who visit and tap into my system using both PCs and Macs and they have no problems either. If you don't want to question your guru any further, that's your call, but I'm still not buying his story.

Zep - I have 3 devices in my network list: 1) 1394 net adapter 2)intel 82566mm gigabit network connection (this one I was able to get an updated driver - but on my network connections, it still shows as local area connection - "network cable unplugged,fire..." and I'm not able to click that and get the rest of the sentence. if I click it it just gives me the name of the adapter. 3) intel wireless wifi link 4965AGN The first and third ones say they are connected and firewalled. I believe that this last wireless 4965AGN is the one that has problems and gets repaired. I could be wrong about that. The LAN one I think has always been unconnected/unplugged. I don't know what that's for or if I need it. Is that my wired internet connection? Thanks. Lynn. PS - if I go through network devices and select update drivers, it only offered updated drivers for the intel 82566mm gigabit network connection. Is there any point in googling for updated driver if this route indicate no new drives exist?

I had an older HP laptop in which the wireless card "died". I purchased an inexpensive wireless adapter, plugged that in, and now the wireless works. Obviously, some connection in the wireless broke, and we could not repair it. My son now uses that computer.

The switch is in on position wireless light is on it is blue orange when off, I purchased and tried a Cisco wireless adapter got same results

You can try uninstalling the network adapter (card) from Device Manager and then rebooting to reinstall it. That will tell you whether it's a hardware failure of the network card. An uninstall/reinstall will load fresh drivers for the network adapter. If it still fails, maybe do what grandms did and get an external adapter.

That's the problem, it's telling you what the problem is. I wonder if the switch is bad, I'd still follow all the very good instruction given and take it a step further too.

Boot the computer to Safe Mode with Networking and see if a connection will be granted there. The reason for doing this is to see if a third party program, most likely an Anti Virus program, or even the windows Firewall is causing issue.

To do that:

Restart the computer, keep tapping the F8 Key, wait for the black screen with white letters to show. Using your arrow key select from the list Safe Mode With Networking. Once selected or highlighted hit enter. Now try connecting briefly.

Don't surf in this mode. If it connects let us know.
