" Microsoft has issued an advanced notification for their last Patch Tuesday of the year, with a whopping 17 bulletins and 40 vulnerabilities. Out of the 17 bulletins, two are marked as "critical", Microsoft's highest security warning, 14 are labeled as "important" while the last one is marked as "moderate."

The update is scheduled for December 14, 2010, and will address a number of issues within Microsoft Windows, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Office, SharePoint and Exchange. The massive update comes just after Microsoft issued no patches for either Windows or Internet Explorer last month."

A few days ago Secunia reported that Internet Explorer had a vulnerability - high threat - and no known patch yet. I don't use IE - and told my husband to just use Firefox. Do you know if that IE8 issue is being patched in this update?

Yes to IE8 per the bulletin which came out yesterday.

All member should be registered to receive the bulletins from Microsoft. Why wait for the uncertain kindness of a member sharing information?

FWIW, after I finally got (and successfully installed) my updates for my Windows 7 computer on Thursday, I decided to do the updates for my aunt's computer (HP laptop with XP SP3). I set auto-updates to "notify, but don't install" and it took nearly half an hour for the scan to tell me what updates were needed. And when it was over, it was quite a list of updates to choose from ! But since it took so long for the scan to take place I decided simply to have the updates installed in one big gulp, rather than breaking it up into smaller chunks. (I didn't want to have to go through the whole scan process again.) Well, it turns out that there was a total of...... thirty...two.... updates... installed -- and successfully at that !! :-) Just thought I'd mention this in case anyone gets nervous about installing 8 or 10 updates at once. Happy Christmas Eve! Maddie outdid herself (and her card brought tears to my eyes!). There is a corn stalk angel, a corn cob santa, a hand-painted gold glass ornament, a box of candy, and a lapel pin that is a palm tree with a martini glass under it (where did she get THAT idea?). You can see the pin if you look really hard on the branch on the right side of the angel's head and bottom of candy box. Thank you, dear Maddie! I'll always remember the first photo we all saw of you, highlighted in candlelight at a Christmas Eve service. Ooops, just looked and the silver tree ornament on the right side is mine. Thought I got all mine out of the picture range. Special thanks to Suzanne for walking us through the picture process! Milkdud, I am so happy you liked the ornament. I found it the week you were struggling with your food choices and just could not resist! DH and I will be alone tonight. We'll have a quiet dinner and then light the luminaries to match all our neighbors around the lake. We usually try to walk around in the stillness and just take in all the light. Silent Night, Holy Night....

I am not sure about updates anymore. The last 3 times I updated caused a problem on my computer. Things worked before, but not after. The last time, I could not remove my ex HD safely. After I uninstalled them the problem was taken care of.

The percentage of users with difficulty is normally small.

I do not recommend doing them as one. I break then down into groups of 2-3 and reboot after each group whether required or not. If the number is large I may even span the updating over several days to insure the system is operating as expected before going on to the next group.

Not intending to hijack this thread, there is also a new version of Firefox available, 3.6.13 that fixed some stability issues, and heaven forbid some security issues.
