After much urging from Ann T and Jessica, here is the "family" photo from the Christmas party. Mom wanted a "four generations" photo for her geneology group:

The picture is my granddaughter Makayla, me, Mom, my daughter Amanda and my grandson David.

WinterCat, Thanks for the poem! I've never run across that one before, and it's beautiful as well as botanical. I'm moderately interested in the history of rose hybridization, and plant discovery and development in general, but the lives of the people who happened to get roses named after them as a rule leave me cold. I've never cared for celebrity gossip. And, perhaps because of a minimalist element in my aesthetic composition, I don't collect plant-themed objects, or anything else, except for the plants themselves, and books. But my goal, or dream, is a very large, very complex garden filled with a tremendous variety of plants all in the place that's right for them. Much as I love both literature and gardening, I don't find a great deal of connection between them. Maybe it's like, oh, kittens: they're absolutely delightful in real life, but perhaps too charming to make good subjects for artistic interpretation. For years I've had a vague idea in the back of my mind of a garden poem, long, full, complex, rich, beautiful, like the garden of my dreams. I'm not going to write the poem, as I'm not a poet, and I haven't found that anyone else has written it, though I don't read much poetry, either. I don't believe that Dickens, that pre-eminently urban author, is commonly regarded as a notable writer of landscape description, but have recently become conscious of his sensitivity to the beauty of the countryside and his ability to describe it. From Nicholas Nickleby: [after a night of drinking and riot, ending in a quarrel] "They...emerged upon the open road,... Fields, trees, gardens, hedges, everything looked very beautiful; the young man scarcely seemed to have noticed them before, though he had passed the same objects a thousand times. That appears to be based on a column Erma Bombeck wrote for Mother's Day. She died in 1996. Sounds like this woman desparately needed rescuing It sounds to me like what she saw was a solution to her problems, not a real person with strengths and weaknesses of his own. What she loved was a 'way out', her idealized vision of you, not you in particular. So did she use you? IMO yes, absolutely. Did you use her? Probably. It sounds like you wanted to rescue her. You were also looking for a new life - out in the country, lots of children, fresh air, warm, smiling, happy wife -- the simple life -- one big happy escape fantasy. And while it sounds like your escape fantasies were perfectly compatible, the real and imperfect humans behind them weren't. You were both disappointed and felt cheated when the real life people didn't measure up to their fantasy counterparts, and when real life problems and annoyances interfered with your utopia. So what do YOU want to do now? You need to make a living to support yourself and your child together. She's got 8 kids to take care of. Are you (plural you, including the kids) better off trying to do this together? Are you better off getting away from this mess so you can rebuild your shattered self-esteem, restart your publishing empire, and just send checks and visit the little one? Only you can decide --

Problems with my family and my fiancee.

Ok, first off, thank you all for the advice and your thoughts on the matter. I think I may need to explain myself a little bit better than I did in my original post. My brain was still in hyper drive as all of this had just happened when I first posted, which is why my original post was a little scattered at best. Firstly, this is MY mother, sister and brother in law that I am having issues with, not ex-in-laws, they surprisingly have no problems with the way in which I raise either of my children. Secondly, my fiancee DOES NOT discipline my children on his own. What he does is help me to enforce any discipline that I have given the boys. He really makes sure that if I tell the boys they are grounded that I stick to it, and sometimes he is the one who talks me into shortening the grounding or calling it off all together depending on the circumstances. Thirdly, in the past I have been financially dependant upon my family. They have paid utility bills, bought groceries, and basically supported myself and my children at various times through the years. I think the reason that I mentioned that my fiancee is the bread winner of our household now, was just to possibly make the point that financially I am not dependant upon them any longer. My fiancee and I share the financial responsibilities of our household, he just makes a little more money than I do. I am not "afraid of loosing my bread winner" as one comment pointed out, and I am in no way "swapping my children for the light bill". My boys are very accepting of my fiancee and respect him. He cares for them and makes sacrifices to make sure that WE can provide them with what is needed. He is not there only for the bills he can pay or rules he can help enforce. Believe me...I've been with someone before who could have cared less if the boys had a stitch of clothing on their backs as long as he had what he wanted. My fiancee is the absolute oppisite of that. He would give his last breath for the boys if that is what it took. He is committed to me and my children. And the last point I would like to clarify is these are not new punishments or new rules because of my fiancee. I have tried and tried in the past to put these rules into action with my children to no avail. Mostly because I knew if I were to try and put my foot down with my family it would cause a major uproar. But the difference between then and now is now I have the support in the home that I need to make sure things get done and not just someone who throws their hands up with a "it's your kids and your family you deal with it and leave me out of it" which is what my ex was like. My mother is of the opinion that it is absurd to ask a 12 year old to do the dinner dishes, clean his room and take out the trash or to ask an 8 year old to clean his room, vaccuum the living room carpet and dust the 3 tables in the living room. I was not raised having chores or consequences for not doing as I was told, I was however spanked for talking back or not minding. So as an adult when I moved out on my own, I had no clue how to properly care for a home. When I was younger mother may have told me to clean my room, but I rarely did because I knew if I didn't do it eventually she would and I could go about my business of playing. I do not want my children to grow up not knowing how to do simple household tasks. Yes they suck, no one likes to do dishes or vaccuum or dust but they are all things that have to be done for the home to look nice and run smoothly. The boys know both the rules and consequences well before hand. But they've in the past been able to whine and sulk their way out of punishments. I do try to follow through with things and not just threaten. Consistancy has always been a problem for me, mainly because even if I did ground the children and still let them go to their grandmothers or on a trip with Auntie and Uncle once out of my sight my family let them do as they please. And yes, my family is has threatened legal action. The words came out of my sisters mouth as "if things don't go back to like they were (they would get the boys whenever with little to no notice by telling me they were doing something with them instead of asking me if they could) We'll make sure that you don't have the boys anymore and we'll do it through the courts" My sister has money and believes that will get her whatever or whomever she wants. She loves to throw my past mistakes in my face, she refuses to see that I have changed drastically over the years because I will forever be the "baby" to everyone in my family. She has even told me that I have to respect her because SHE is an adult. Guess at 34 I'm still not an adult yet. lol

It's nice to see you all together Annie. I think that's the first time we've seen your mother. That's a pretty dress Makayla is wearing.

Annie you'll be glad of that four generation pic in years to come. Take as many more as you can and in different poses. I have mine taken with my grandmother seated and holding my first daughter on her knee shortly after she was born, with my mother standing behind, alongside me.
There's only two of us left from that photo now so both my daughter and I treasure it.

What a fantastic photo!! Oh, how we all must wish we could have one just like it! You are so lucky to have such a wonderful large family!

Little David, or Bud..hehehe, looks simply adorable in the little outfit I sent him!! I bet the hat was too small? I know Alicia has a big head and the hats usually just barely fit, if at all. Big brained kids if you ask me!!

Makayla looks so precious and darling! She is a real heart stopper, that is for sure! What a doll baby! With her features and "look", she would be such a pretty little cover model!

Thanks for sharing your wonderful family with everyone, I especially feel honored to see such a wonderful moment in your family's life!

What a wonderful picture. It will be a treasure to your darling grandchildren one day. Remember to protect such treasure with acid-free scrapbook papers! As a genealogist also, I appreciate your Mom's desire for that lovely picture. The kids are just precious and they'll grow-up so quickly!

Oh Annie, that's a wonderful photo. Amanda is a real beauty! She is taller than I thought.

I have a photo of 4 generations of women in my family taken before my grandmother passed away. My daughter is the oldest grandchild. Priceless picture!

riverrat, Amanda is very tall for my family. She's 5'7", I'm 5'1", my mother is 4'10". LOL

I haven't figured out how to get prints of this picture, I added it to photobucket and now I can't seem to put it back into my Kodak software. :-) I should have ordered prints before I moved it, I guess.

Ashley was.....somewhere. It's hard to get very many people together in one place when you have that many people together. (grin) I do have a couple of nice pictures of Ashley, and one of my living room with all the kids opening presents. I'll post them, you'll be amazed. :-)

Susan, that outfit does fit perfectly, doesn't it? And yes, the hat was too small....of course.

I was going to mention that your mother is an itty bitty lady!!
Lovely picture.....I know there are some 4 generation pictures around here....but not sure where....
And now, until the grands start with the great grands and I live that long....there won't be any more 4 generation pictures.
Somewhere, there is a 5 generation picture with me as a baby. My father was 30 whan I was born.....and his great grandfather was 100.

I had to laugh when I read that Amanda is 5'7 & you are 5'1. My DD is about the same as Amanda and I'm a shrimp like you! I use to stand on her bed, when I needed to discipline DD (felt more authoritative-lol). You have a beautiful family and just from your posts about your girls & grandbabies, I know how blessed you must feel!
