I was happy to read about Fountec, but then read that a surfactant in it will harm flying insects. My fountain reservoir is buried, top is a concave tiled disk with holes for recirculation. The bees and wasps come frequently for their water needs. The bees activities are wonderful - they float on the water, doing a half circle or so, then fly away. Fountec is not only a powerful algaecide and clarifier, it is also a surfactant that breaks water tension. Due to the natural effect of Fountec's polymers on water tension, it is an excellent deterrent for control of mosquitoes, flies, and wasps in fountains, water gardens and birdbaths.

With your poor water quality, it might be better to use a glazed ceramic pot for the fountain, which can more easily be wiped down occasionally to remove calcium/lime scale. Or live with the fact that the pot you already have will need some scrubbing every week or so to keep it looking pristine. It would seem that the vinegar is also a good solution, but its a shame to lose the wildlife attraction value of the fountain.

Hydrogen peroxide is so safe I would say use it as often as necessary. I use it in my pond on a regular basis with no harmful effects to fish or plants. I watch for signs that algae is starting to grow and add as needed. I find if I wait too long it's a bit more difficult to get rid of the algae again.
