If you have the original 8mm, it is worth getting it converted to a digital format so that it can be put on a DVD or SD card. The quality is a lot better and you cna then edit it pretty easily on a computer. Where in Texas are you? I know places in San Antonio that do good work.

I also have a cannon about that age and it clearly states it will not take anything over a 2 GB SD card. That would definitely be my guess as to why you get that error. I agree the point of the memory card is to use it to temporarily store the pictures on the camera till you can off load them to your pc and burn them to cd or whatever medium you choose, take the card in and have them printed out or what ever. Once you do that you have all the space on the card available again. I never use the cable to transfer pictures and never use any software from the camera it is just not needed when you can so easily use the memory card in a memory card reader.

Sometimes files can be obliterated from SD cards (and in fact segments can become inaccessible) if the card is removed from a PC without being first dismounted/ejected. Especially if it has been opened by a program and the program is still active, that might have happened at Walmart. I hope the copies on the SD card weren't your only copies. If so, you may be out of luck. If it's important to you, you may want to take the card to a local PC technician (not Geek Squad at Best Buy) to seen if an industrial strength recovery tool might work. It's better to make duplicate copies of photo files from SD cards at your first opportunity. Onto a PC or two, onto an external drive, or both ways. To take files for prints, use a duplicate file copy that you're okay losing if there's a problem. Any one of the following will work - a thumb drive, an SD card used only for this purpose, a burned CD (they cost less than a dime), or even just upload the files directly to the store's website.
