Question about wireless connection

We've had dial-up for many years here and it has always been pretty slow. (about 24 kbps). It would take me an hour to upload 1 pic to Photobucket and took me forever to order anything or to do online banking.

Recently we got at&t wireless for our computer. You just plug in a card into the monitor and it makes a wireless connection.

It does things like Photobucket, banking and ordering extremely fast. But now, when I visit forums like this one, its sooooooooo much slower. And occasionally, it doesn't even load the entire page. Why the discrepancy?

I use Verizon wireless but don't have that problem. I notice that everything slows down some in the evenings when usage is evidently high. I can't imagine why a forum, which is mostly script and not graphics, should slow down. Hope someone can help you.

That's a very strange symptom. How long has this been going on? I have a fast Internet connection and when I occasionally have a problem it's a problem on all sites, and I usually just reboot my router to fix it. I suggest you talk to AT&T tech support.

Hi, There is a page on their website that shows the coverage area, but be sure to call them even if you don't see your area. They might be able to help anyway. Christie, my connection has been very reliable. I live near a hilltop and get service from a tower on the other side of Nixa. My neighbors live in a 'holler' and get service from another tower. You do NOT need to have a line-of-sight from your house to a particular tower to receive the service. There have been two times where city workers had to turn off the electricity at the tower my signal comes from, while they worked on the tower and I had no service for about 15 minutes to half an hour. Due to this, the wireless company told me they just installed a battery backup at the tower, so this shouldn't be an issue again. When I have a question, I call them. And if I do get voicemail, they call back within minutes and help me until my problem or question is resolved. I did sign a one year contract. But after hearing for years that AT&T was getting close, and then being told last year that it would be quite a while after all ... There may be a way around the contract if it bothers you, though. (I turned down 2 work from home jobs in recent years because I couldn't get hi-speed, so I was ready!) Also, if you give the name of who referred you, that person gets $2 off their monthly bill. A few of us now have given my neighbors name, so they get a lower rate. We presently live southeast of Clever 4 miles, near the James River. We also have some property miles out of Rogersville which we hoped to build on, but I dreaded going back to dial-up. I was so happy to find out that they now provide service out there too, so guess we can keep the property :) hope that helps, Melani

dbags- Just to be clear for you: 1. Right now your DSL goes from the wall to the DSL modem to your computer. 2. You will now modify the system by unplugging the cat5 cable from the back of your computer, and plugging it into the Linksys router; then you have a second cat5 cable that will go from the Linksys to the back of the existing computer. All you're doing is inserting the Linksys router so that it can take the signal from the DSL modem and split it up to more than one computer. All this should be very clearly described in the Linksys instructions, including the step-by-step sequence of installing the new router software and making the physical conections. Once this is completed, you will have the capability to connect up several more computers with cat5 cable and/or several wirelessly as well.

How do I print wirelessly without a wireless router? If you don't have a wireless router, you can still print to your HP printer wirelessly! To do this, you set up what is called a "peer-to-peer" wireless network (sometimes called an "ad hoc" network). "I don't think someone would be on the phone 3 to 4 hours almost every night" You must not have a teenage daughter. :) The phone interference would be most likely if it's in your house since you're not in an apartment. I don't know why you're dropping the connection every night. Is there any other electronic equipment that gets turned on at your house during that time? Maybe something else is sending off signals that interfere. Have you tried resetting the router when that happens? Turn it off, let it sit for a minute and turn it back on to see if that helps. If you're on a 1 acre lot, I'm surprised that you're seeing your neighbors' connections. To secure your connection, you'd need to go into the router setup and the wireless setup on your computer and set them both to use WPA (or WEP if that is all that is supported). The router should have instructions on how to do this. If not, post here and somebody can help.

I have never heard of a card that you plug into a monitor that gives you a high speed connection?
There must be something that I am missing?

Its not necessarily "high speed".....its just wireless, which is, for the most part, much faster than our dial-up service was.
Kudzu......its done this since we got the device last week.
I guess I'll have to call support.
DH is getting some sort of cable so we can move this plug-in card to different areas of the room, in hopes of a better speed.

I cannot stand to use GW forums with Internet Explorer, it is soooo slow. Try Firefox and see if your experience isn't better.

I agree, Firefox is much better than IE. Sorry I have no clue about the rest of the issue.....

I use Firefox most of the time, but its still happening.

Even with dial-up, it should be faster. May be your computer is too old?
