Questions about a Hobart Dishwasher

We recently purchased a home with a Hobart commercial dishwasher. My guess is that it is about 18 years old. We have a second dishwasher for everyday use. I don't have a manual for the Hobart. Although I can figure out how to turn it on, I wonder if there is anyone here who has used one and who can tell me when I would want to use it - large pots and pans, glassware, utensils? I did ask a local appliance store, but other than telling me how lucky we were to own one, that it has a super short cycle, and that it would likely never break, I didn't get a ton of specifics or get a clear understanding about its optimal use at a residence, which I realize is not its intended use. It only has those green flat commercial bins in it. (Previous use of the house had a quasi-institutional purpose, hence the Hobart.)

If it is like the one I used briefly it is mostly for final
washing/Sanitizing of already perinsed half washed dishes. Great
for glassware and such, but not designed for large amounts
of food debris or any cooked on food.Cycle time is only a few minutes.

Are you sure it's actually a commercial version? Once upon a time, Kitchenaid DW's were known as "Kitchenaid by Hobart" and were some of the best and most durable residential DW's ever built were Hobart residential ones.

Other than that, if it is a true commercial DW, it's not that useful as it's not designed to really clean anything, just sanitize. If you've ever gotten a water glass in a restaurant straight out of the DW all hot and steamy with lipstick still stuck on it, then that's what you'd get out of it unless it were washed properly first.

Hi all, my first post on this forum; have read some recent threads here, and following kitchen forum closely. We will be renovating our kitchen this spring (been waiting 16 yrs!). Have a deposit on a GE Cafe electric range (I do know about induction, and we will be buying a single burner unit to use along with grilling outside during the reno, we have no gas lines here, and I got a good deal scratch and dent). Have been researching other appliances so much my head is spinning. The bottom freezer fridge and DW will be very close together (around the corner and down a bit from range). Looked at Bosch Integra DW 500SHX45PO5UC & CR best buy Whirlpool Gold fridge GX5FHTXVQ, then an appliance store rec. Samsung clean steel fridge RF263AEPN and DW DMT400RHS over those. Another store rec. the GE Profile Fridge PFSS9 & GE DW PDWT38ORSS. After reading all the DW posts, we would splurge on a Miele, as it seems to be most recommended hands down. They start at $1200 - is that one fine (didn't get a model no. yet), as we really wouldn't spend more than that? Re. fridge, would like the largest 36" wide (we have no extra fridge/freezer), no water dispenser, no ice on the door. That GE Profile is 29 cu. ft., which seems to be the largest. I know there are other 29 cu. ft. also. It is $1999, which is our upper limit for fridg spending. Fridge & DW feedback/other suggestions? Thanks so much!

The reason manufacturers have moved toward providing cords is for service personnel to be able to work on the dishwasher with it un-powered without having to have a disconnecting means in view of the appliance, or a lock-out/tag-out system at your breaker box. Just pull the plug. Installing a receptacle box is not difficult in most circumstances, but if you are not aware of the code and safety requirements or confident in your skill, have an electrician do it. Given that you mention "city" in a message above, it is likely that the powers that be prohibit you from installing a receptacle yourself, in any case. kas

I have the Miele Diamante G2143SC, which has the control panel on the front. The one your looking at G2183SCSF has the hidden controls on the top. Difference is the G2143 has the LED display on the front where you can set a delay start, and there is also a "Turbo" function that can reduce was time by 15-25 percent. The G2183 does not have the delay start or Turbo. The next model down G2181SCSF loses the China/Chrystal mode and the water softener. Since you have a whole-home water softener, as long as it's properly set, you don't need the use of the one on the dishwasher. But since I don't have a whole-home unit, I do use the built-in water softener on the Diamante and have it set to 6 grains. My unit was also connected to the hot water, since that is where the existing dishwasher hookup was. I asked Miele directly about this beforehand, and was told that you can hook it up to either, but said that there is no issue with connecting it to the hot water. So when it was installed, that's how it was done. There was no "cold water hookup" mode mentioned anywhere in the installation sheet or manual. It does not waste water as deeageaux stated. If fills from the hot water line and starts the cycle. All the cycles run fine. Maybe this was an issue on older units? Here's a copy/paste from the manual: The dishwasher can heat its own water to the temperature required by the wash program. This allows for connection of the machine to either a hot or cold water source. For lowest energy consumption connect the dishwasher to a cold water source. For fastest possible wash times, with slightly higher energy consumption, connect the dishwasher to a hot water source. All programs use hot water in the rinse cycles. Ã¯Â¿Â½ The inlet hose is approximately 5 ft. (1.5m) long. Ã¯Â¿Â½ A 5 ft. (1.5m) drain extension is available from Miele. The water inlet hose comes equipped with a 3/4" female hose thread connector. This can be directly connected to a water supply with 3/4" MHT (male hose thread ends). Ã¯Â¿Â½ Water pressure: Must be between 4.5 - 145 psi (0.3 - 10 bar).

Cheryl, I purchased a suite of KitchenAid appliances...Professional Dual Fuel Range, Architect Series Refrigerator, Dishwasher, and a Microwave, and they were installed in my new kitchen the last week of December 2004. My dishwasher was top of the line at the time, Model KUDS01FLSS, and we paid more than $1000 for it. It operates quietly enough, but my dishwasher door squeaks and squeals every time it's opened and closed,and gets worse as each day passes. I called KA and they said I needed to schedule service call. It bothers me, alot,to pay for a service call on a 2 1/2 year old top of the line DW, that gets used 3-4 times a week. Debi 2006 mentioned in her post about the KitchenAid Forum, and I registered with KA and posted my problem with my DW door. I received a response from KitchenAid Ricky and I think the response may be the answer to your DW door problem. The door hinges have a nylon rope on pulleys. The pulleys and nylon rope can be seen on each side of the DW bottom front just behind the toe kick plate. You can see them easily with a flashlight, so you may want to check and see if the nylon rope has snapped. KA Ricky stated that the DW has tension springs, but the squeaky and squealing is probably coming from the nylon rope being too tight, and the rope may need to be replaced. I have checked my door and the sqeaks and squeal are coming from the tension springs, but I don't know if the nylon rope is a problem, too. You described hearing a snap, and then your DW door would not stay open half way, but would crash open. Did your DW door squeak and squeal when you opened and closed it, before you heard the snap? I wonder if there are others who have problems with their KitchenAid dishwasher doors. Linda

Yes, it is definitely a commercial dishwasher. Attaching a photo - model number is LX18. While I could occasionally use it for glassware, my thought is that I should sell it and buy a second dishwasher, or use the money for something else..... I appreciate the feedback - I really couldn't figure out the use. (Prior owner had a lot of large functions involving glasses, cups, etc.)

"LX18 requires 180Ã¯Â¿Â½F incoming water temperature."--from the manual.

That would be enough to get rid of it right there. No home hot water heater can supply that temperature hot water due to the potential of scalding burns. Without it, and without the commercial DW detergent that is required, the DW cannot function very well.

GreenDesigns - we do have a commercial water heater that feeds into the Hobart - just asked the plumber. We also have a separate residential water heater. It is not worthwhile for us to own the Hobart from a number of standpoints, I now realize. I have already emailed some restaurant friends of mine to find someone who can take it off our hands. Thanks for attaching the manual. I should have looked on line for it!

from the manual, looks a true dishwasher (versus a sanitizing glass washer like the hobart AM-12)
