Questions About my Kitchen Aid Dishwasher

I bought the model #KUDIO1FLSS about 2 1/2 years ago. I got the whole Kitchen Aid line - fridge, microwave, slide-in stove/oven, dishwasher. I'm happy with all of them, but I have a few concerns about the dishwasher.

1) It has never been amazingly quiet. I know other people have said theirs IS quiet, so I'm wondering maybe this is an installation problem? Is there any way to make it quieter now?

2) A few days ago I heard a "snap" and now the door to the dishwasher won't stay half open. It just crashes open. Any idea what happened and what I can do to fix it?

I think the "I" model is the least quiet of the KA models - they have I, P, S and U. I have an S and it's very quiet - not silent - but quiet enough.

As far as the door - check out repairclinic.com to see if they have any suggestions - it sounds like your broke something that holds the door in place. Possibly you can replace the part yourself. If not, you can either call for service but if it's no longer under warranty, I'd probably just live with it - how often do you need to have the door half open?

I have the S model and it's not silent but quiet enough and our family room is on the other side of a half wall. During most cycles it is hard to hear, but with the grinder, you're always going to hear some noise. That's why some people like the Bosch because it doesn't have a grinder. I prefer a grinder and like the bigger interior of a KA (tradeoffs). You can also ask your question about the door at the KA forum on the KA website. You'll have to register though.

Foodiemama: There is no doubt in my mind that as companies look to cut costs in order to offer consumers products at lower (competitive) prices that sometimes they cut too far. Every company has their share of lemons, look at the automakers. Can you say Pinto? Does that infer that all Ford cars are lemons? Not exactly. We replaced all of our appliances for our remodel and we looked at all brands, and I mean all of them. I wont say what my background is but letÂs just say that itÂs clear what manufacturer is making which branded appliance these daysÂ hereÂs an example, Vikings CD FD fridge is a KA with a big Viking badge on the front. In the same showroom there are Jenn AirÂs.. same fridge, different badge. One has to be really careful about saying brand X is better than brand Y because in many cases, Brand Y is Brand X. ItÂs hard to say they you will never buy KA again because they make so many of the appliances out there, the list of brands that Whirlpool manufactures under is huge. That being said, when it came to choosing a new dishwasher to replace our beloved 13 year-old KA, neither myself or my wife could bring ourselves to plunk down the money on a new KA dishwasher. They have cheapened them so much from our old one we could not justify the cost. Do they get good ratings and do they clean well? Seems like people like the new ones, but it would pain us everytime we dragged the racks out only to remind us how they have cut costs and how much we miss the old one. We ultimately chose a Bosch. Will we regret it? Only time will tell but for the time we have used it we are pleased. If it pukes in a couple of years weÂll move onto something else and IÂm sure that there will be some new fancy gotta have thing that will be all the rage by then.

I cannot answer your question regarding a wash cycle indicator, but my cabinet maker warned me about the KitchenAid panel not being able to fit flush with the adjacent cabinet doors because of depth issues. I heeded his advice and went with a Bosch and glad I did. My neighbor put his brand new KitchenAid on Craigslist when it stuck out from his adjacent inset cabinet doors after installation. It did not stick out much, just could not get it flush. I'm sure there are plenty of great installs with KitchenAid panels, this was just my experience. Kitchen Aid, Bosch and Meile are all great dishwashers.

I do use rinse aid in my Bosch. Dunno what would happen if I didn't. The third rack is awesome. So, so awesome. I got it by accident because my GC found an 800 series for the same price as the 300 series machine I had specified. I use mine for silverware. The way the third rack works, I can sort the silverware for washing, which makes unloading it a breeze (scoop up all the spoons in one hand and drop them in their spot). I took the basket out and I can fit so, so, so much more in the bottom rack now. A whole party's worth of plates! Or mixing bowls, plus the dinner dishes! I do so much less handwashing now. I use the normal cycle all the time so I don't care about all the other options, except that I do use the delayed start pretty much every day. I load the dishwasher after dinner and set it to run a couple of hours later. That way I can add the random post-dinner snack items, without risk of forgetting to start the machine before I go to bed.

I have a entry level Kitchen Aid built in induction cooktop. It is set in over a Whirlpool oven because this is my forever home and I hate pulling the stove out to clean the floor. It works for me. I chose the cooktop after reviewing clients' experience. It also is safe for my young grandchildren to use. I like the lock feature on too. I purchased the patterned glass to hide minor scratches. The cooktop makes no noise at all because I use very heavy laminated pots and pans. I just picked up the ones I wanted at Winners. I learned from working in the industry, it's about the pots more than anything. I like cast iron but I don't use them because of scratching. I use parchment paper between my ancient wok and it scorches the paper but at least the top stays clean and not scratched. I also have tried the paper on the surface when flipping in a fry pan. It works great. I seldom use the higher settings because the residual heat in the pans does the work. I often shut off pasta and veggies early. My bridge works evenly because the pans are heavy. My blue roaster was a disaster on the bridge and burned on low heat. Proof it's about the pan. My only concern was that the magnets were damaged with shipping but they were replaced right away. I believe it has more to do with going through customs from the USA than anything else because it seems to be a common repair with CDN clients. Not a deal breaker but wish they would just assemble on site if my hunch is right. Overall I'm pleased with this purchase. It has given excellent performance. We have used it for 3 years now. I cannot say the same for premium brands that others have purchased or I have used on vacations. One note is be prepared to learn how to boil a soft egg again. I finally am consistent.

I purchased a suite of KitchenAid appliances...Professional Dual Fuel Range, Architect Series Refrigerator, Dishwasher, and a Microwave, and they were installed in my new kitchen the last week of December 2004. My dishwasher was top of the line at the time, Model KUDS01FLSS, and we paid more than $1000 for it. It operates quietly enough, but my dishwasher door squeaks and squeals every time it's opened and closed,and gets worse as each day passes. I called KA and they said I needed to schedule service call. It bothers me, alot,to pay for a service call on a 2 1/2 year old top of the line DW, that gets used 3-4 times a week. Debi 2006 mentioned in her post about the KitchenAid Forum, and I registered with KA and posted my problem with my DW door. I received a response from KitchenAid Ricky and I think the response may be the answer to your DW door problem. The door hinges have a nylon rope on pulleys. The pulleys and nylon rope can be seen on each side of the DW bottom front just behind the toe kick plate. You can see them easily with a flashlight, so you may want to check and see if the nylon rope has snapped. KA Ricky stated that the DW has tension springs, but the squeaky and squealing is probably coming from the nylon rope being too tight, and the rope may need to be replaced. I have checked my door and the sqeaks and squeal are coming from the tension springs, but I don't know if the nylon rope is a problem, too. You described hearing a snap, and then your DW door would not stay open half way, but would crash open. Did your DW door squeak and squeal when you opened and closed it, before you heard the snap? I wonder if there are others who have problems with their KitchenAid dishwasher doors.

I was just looking at the KUDSO3FTPA dish washer in a showroom today and the door sqeaked and squealed on it too.

I want to thank Linda in her comments on the squeaking dishwasher door and the nylon rope pulley system - our Kitchen Aid door has been squeaking for eight years now and... YIPPEEEE! one of the nylon ropes broke. As a result I got a repair kit, FSP (Appliance Care Products by Whirlpool Corporation) Code: 120703 for just under $20.00. This includes one pulley system for each side AND a nylon rope for each side as well. The beauty of the new system is that there are now two rolling pulleys per side instead of just one on the old system... And drum roll please... I was advised to put corn starch on the new nylon rope and I even applied it to the top of each pulley after installation and then opened and closed the door... NO SQUEAKING after eight long years of dishwasher load, after load, after... Oh, how me and my wife sang out praises of joy!!! If you have a squeaking door try corn starching the old nylon rope, but if you are going to pull the dishwasher out anyway to do so spend just $20 and enjoy door-opening-and-closing-silence!!!

The last KitchenAid I opened up still used counterbalancing door springs. They've since gone to nylon ropes?
