If it were me, I'd reinstall the sound card. I'm sure there will be additional feedback from others.

actually, I was only referring to the software drivers. Typically there will be multiple driver components for the sound card (legacy audio, audio codecs and audio device support as well as the actual chipset driver) Sometimes multiple reboots are required to get all of the components installed. IMO, the sound card drivers are the hardest to diagnose issues with and reinstall. Good luck, I'm sure you will find the answer Grandms.

Here is a very interesting thread. Be sure to read all of it especially the fix by MrLateeBrown. None mention your model but all refer to Conexant sound drivers.

Owbist, thanks. I even tried the fix by MrLateeBrown, but it did not work. That driver is for XP64 and my XP is 32bit. I may give the other "fix" a try, going to the Toshiba site for a file.

I tried what was suggested on the HP site, but that did not work, either. There seems not to be a newer driver than the one I have.

I think I'll do some googling tomorrow and see what Conexant has to offer.

Grandms... Could you inadvertently have mute turned on? I've done that more than once!!! :) A system restore worked for me when I lost my sound. I uninstalled some software (don't remember what it was) and suspected that had something to do with the problem but was not sure...

The first thing I checked was to be sure nothing was muted. I was trying to do the system restore just in case I had something set wrong, and that's when system restore did not work. Finally did that in Safe Mode.

Still no solution to the sound problem after trying everything that was suggested here.

Read the 4 replies from MrFlicker, he might have your cure too.Note his second post has a graphic attached, this shows the wires under the start button. Take a look also at his final post, he has a link to videos on how to dismantle various parts of the 6000 series.

Owbist, my power button does light up, and I tried pressing near it as in the video, but that did nothing. But I'll try that again with a little more pressure and in several spots.

No sure I'd be brave enough to do what MrFlicker suggests. I'll take a look at the videos on dismantling the 6000 series tomorrow. May be late in the day before I can do that. The extent of my fooling in a computer's innards is adding RAM to both desktop tower and to laptop.

I replied a few minutes ago and my post disappeared. For some reason I'm having trouble staying logged in, and this site seems very slow in responding tonight. Could be my satellite connection as we've been having rain, but it's over now.

Anyway, Owbist, you found the problem for me. I powered on the laptop and then applied harder pressure than last evening just below the power button. Yes, I heard sound. Then I plugged in some earphones (why didn't I do that sooner?) and had sound. So the speakers are the problem and it seems likely that the wire connection is broken. Now I must study those videos that MrFlicker posted and see if I think I can do this job. Of course, I'll have to find the wire connection before taking anything apart.

Thank you for helping me isolate this problem. And wish me luck! This may be a job that I won't tackle or will have to postpone for several weeks at least.

Ah, great news Grandms. One problem solved even if not cured yet. One problem to go. I surely hope you or someone can fix the damaged wire and I will indeed be wishing you luck.

I just ordered the power button ribbon cable for the DV 6000 series. Just hope it's the right thing. Once it comes and I get it installed, I'll update and let you know if it solved the problem. Keep your fingers crossed.

The ribbon cable arrived in a timely manner, but I was so busy I wasn't able to try the repair before today. (Also nervous about trying to do this job.) When I opened up the area, the cables, etc. were not in the exact places shown in the videos. There were two ribbon cables, not one, and the speaker wires were fastened to the same board where the ribbon cables were. Also, I could not remove the speakers as there were no screws holding the speaker bar in place as shown on the video. As it was, all I had to remove was the switch cover and the keyboard. Now the problem was to decide which ribbon cable was the culprit. I removed one and replaced it with the new one, put everything back together and booted up. The quick play buttons did not light up and there was no sound, so I knew I had replaced the wrong cable. So back to work, put the original ribbon cable back and switched the new one over to the other location. Voila! I now have sound and everything lights up properly. In addition, the quick play buttons are now working again.

Many, many thanks to owbist and others for their help, and many thanks to Mr. Flicker on the HP forum for the instructions for making this repair.

Ah, I like happy endings. We'll make a computer repair person out of you yet Grandms LOL. Way to go, I really love it when someone is willing to get inside the case and affect the repairs.
