I received Corinne's Security Garden yesterday and printed out her suggestions. My new laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium is due to be delivered tomorrow. 8-)

Lots to do in setting up a new computer, but I think it's fun!

Jeremy, a few more tips for ya if you haven't already made a decision. first off a great guide is "Gardening Indoors" by george van patten, i have found this book to be indispensable in setting up my first indoor garden (last month). the book reviews electricity and lighting in depth and he discusses pros and cons of various lighting configurations as well as ventilation, soil, hydroponics, fertilizers, stages of growth, propagation, etc. if you can get your hands on it, highly recommended, easily the best investment i made as a rookie (and no im NOT affiliated with the publisher or author in ANY way :) ok, about ventilation; you will definitely need at least 1 oscillating fan to prevent stagnant air around plants, and push them around to get them to develop stong limbs (important more so with the taller / woody stem plants like peppers or tomatoes) also if the space you used is enclosed (i would recommend enclosing it and then covering with reflective material to get most out of your lights) you will also need a blower or inline fan to exchange the air in the growing room at least once every few minutes and prevent heat\humidity build up. if the space is open this will not be a big deal and the osc fans should do fine, but you will lose a lot of valuable light that could be reflected. you also might want to consider 2 600W or 400W bulbs as 2 smaller bulbs can actually be more efficient then 1 large one (you can get them closer to the plants without burning, as well as distribute the light more evenly over a larger area obviously at more cost though Personally im running a 430W phillips "son-agro" HPS bulb in a 3.5'X4.5' 6.5'high 'closet'. with vent and osc fan and its working great! actually my first cayenne peppers popped out of the flowers this morning. any way good luck with your growin'

Snidely - good point about not removing things if they're not causing trouble - lest they turn out to have been needed. So I have left some things that I have no idea about. I did delete Dell Stage - bc. it's a real pain - gets in the way all the time (my daughter who's had this on her laptop for 2 years confirmed that it's just in the way). I did all the microsoft updates, ran a few antivirus, got rid of what I want to get rid of, and it's mostly good to go. Here's the trouble that remains: I can't get the printer working. It's a Canon Pixma MX850 - on the home network. I did not want to install the Canon disk bc. it has a ton of it's own bloatware. So I went to Canon and downloaded the driver - as well as the IJ utility software (I think that helps the computer find a printer on the network). Went to devices and printers, added the printer and made it the default printer. It shows up in printers and devices, but when I go to print something, it fails. Troubleshooting says the test page didn't print bc. something else is in the queue. But there is nothing else in the queue. I opened the queue from my pain desktop (that's connected to the printer) - and there's no documents in the queue. Went to the printer queue on DH's lapto; - it also shows nothing in the queue. I can print from other computers. Don't know what else to do. And I just remembered that I did not see Java. It didnt come up as needing updating when I ran the Secunia scan. I am not sure which programs need it, but can imagine my husband being stumped if he tries to do something that needs Java and asks him to install. I'd like to install it for him. Got to remember that. I also have a question about Microsoft Security Essentials. Twice now it found something bad - and I selected to remove the couple of files. Does this AV just run in the background or do I also need to run scans? Thank you. Lynn.

it will redirect you and will take you to one of the sites that is auto installing the various versions of antivirus xp 2008/2009 or what ever they happen to be naming them, which are carrying many types of infections with it. This has gotten so prevalent now that the bad guys have discovered this method of taking over websites that everyone is trying to put out warnings to the community to try to make people aware if they see this suddenly happening to them NOT to click on any of the redirected pages, Not to buy any of the fake programs, but instead to immediately close out all instances of the browser, in some cases that will flush the urls out of the clipboard but not always in some it takes a reboot of the pc to clear the urls from the clipboard from what I have read. The best thing you can do is be very careful where you surf and where you click. If you use firefox you can use the no script add-on set as shown. The forums have been seeing many many cases of these exploits and several got them from very legit websites that had been hacked and a redirect put on the site. gillian don't panic about it but it is something we all need to be very aware of since it has been so on the increase. Hopefully adobe and the browsers can get some method out to help with this soon. It is better to be aware of this kind of thing so we know to come for help asap if we know we have been exposed to one of the redirects. If you see anything pop up saying it is scanning your pc and that you have infections or anything like that do NOT click anywhere on the page, close the browser or just go to start and reboot it. From what I have read the earlier versions of firefox are also affected. Also it is a good idea to go to your pc to your adobe and check for updates. You can also use the secunia inspector to see if it shows you have out of date programs. Updates should hopefully come out soon. The Secunia Online Software Inspector I just wanted to post so y'all would be aware of this stuff, don't freak out, just be alert. Always better to be prepared and educated than caught off guard.

I am making note of ravencajun's very helpful sites. My computer with Windows XP crashed last week and I had to buy a new one - I live in Toronto - and yes, I bought one that unfortunately has Windows 8. Windows 8 is not compatible with our paid for by the month security - found out that the hard way - and finally spoke with someone at Rogers who knew this - they all don't. I spent hours on the phone with HP in India and then the same with Microsoft. I also bought the Student Microsoft 2013 package that has Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote - but it came with a KEY number - not discs. I have successfully loaded Microsoft Office Professional (with discs) on my last 2 computers so was not expecting a major problem - but I have one. You can only use the key once and it didn't take I know it has something to do with my e-mail address. The computer store where I bought the sucker told me to enter my e-mail address and carry on when I was setting up the computer. I did so, but my password was all lower case and this would not work with the new set-up so I made up a new one (apparently you can change it - but guess what - it won't let me). The person at the Rogers, our Internet/Cable company instructed me to uninstall the Norton anti-virus so that I could re-install our monthly paid for anti-virus that we buy from them. Well, it doesn't work with Windows 8 but he didn't know this. I called Best Buy - couldn't help. So I called HP and they took control of my computer and downloaded Defender. I knew not to try and load the Microsoft office until I had an anti-virus program installed. The HP fellow tried to install it and realized after I had typed in the key that it wasn't going to work. Apparently, according to Microsoft - he transferred me to him - this happens a lot - the e-mail/password problem - ends up corrupting something and you can't reload - so now the Microsoft fellow has sent my file to the appropriate dept. to be fixed and I am to expect a call from India within 3 days. Someone had better be able to fix this because the program cost me $139.00 plus our Cdn. taxes. Then Microsoft loaded on a Hotmail e-mail - but I noticed he did it via the temporary Outlook. While I love Outlook I have not purchased it and do not need it. So when I open up Internet I get the MSN - bing business and I have to sign in with my original Rogers e-mail with the new password that has 2 capitalized alpha characters. But I want my home page to be Rogers - we have Rogers Internet. When I am lucky enough to find it I can enter my e-mail using my original password - so something is still very iffy. The 'charms' as they are called on the first page drive me nuts. I only use my computer for e-mail, Internet and some Word - plus a few of the necessary accessories to keep the computer "healthy'. I do not shop on e-Bay, Amazon, etc., I don't play games, play music or watch TV. I use it like a fancy typewriter. I know there must be a way to increase the font size and the size of the screen. At the moment everything is probably in 8 point with 2 inch margins. I have always kept my fonts large and I didn't have the margins. it isn't a problem with my vision - at almost 63 I still have 20/20 but I see no point in straining my eyes just to see the darned computer. So - I HATE IT! I haven't hooked up the Brother laser printer I bought as yet. My old printer - a Canon - that cost about $60.00 used the dreaded inkjet cartridges - and even though I would tell it not to print in colour - and I do know how - it ignored me. Of course you can't print unless there are colour and black cartridges in the printer - so there I was with $51.34 worth of 2 cartridges - the colour is very expensive - plus our taxes on hand - and I was 6 days late in being able to return them. I knew the old printer would not work with the new computer so I was printing out what I could while I was crashing. It was kind of awful - non-responsive mode for an hour at a time. I have no plans to try and reload anything on to the new computer just in case there is something wrong with the data. Then there was the old computer. I deleted what I could but couldn't manage to get rid of the stuff that I really wanted to - as in my name, registration, Outlook Express etc. - so I took off the side panel, took out the likely pieces of hardware - gave them a soaking and took the hammer to them and then put the side piece back on before I took It to the store's recycling department. So I am not a happy camper. Every time I try to do something basic it backfires, so I will definitely look at raven's websites - and I guess I had better see if that darned new printer will work. Best Buy sold it to me with the computer so it had better work - and I will be having something to say to them about the Microsoft Office package. Sorry for the rant, but you got me on Day ONE! I keep trying to load a toolbar that has something on it to allow me to change the font but so far that hasn't worked.

it has certainly been educational for me, I set up my husbands laptop prior to giving it to him for Christmas and although I may have let slip a few swear words all in all it has gone well and I am learning yet another OS. Have to keep those old brain cells firing!

What system did you get?

With this Vista SP2 system working as well as it is I have no reason for a W7. I haven't even gone to the store to look at one. Distinguishing want vs need is a credo of mine, and since cost is not an issue I'm afraid the monster we all have inside of us would take me over if I did.

grandms, you are going to have a lot of fun with the new laptop! Congratulations.

If you live in a cold climate, after it is delivered, take it out of the box and let it warm up a bit before you power it up. I'm sure there will be plenty of things to look over.

DA, it is Windows 7 Home Premium. I skipped Vista. I really love XP, and really, the main reason I ordered the new laptop was to give my son the one I've been using. It is in top-notch condition with 2GB RAM and a 160GB HDD. One thing I am going to miss is Outlook Express; it is so easy to use. I guess I'll adjust to Windows Live apps (at least the mail program); not so sure I'll install all of them. I've been doing some reading. I went to a slightly smaller size this time---a 14" screen rather than 15.6". This makes it lighter at just under 5 lbs vs about 6. It has the latest RAM (DDR3) and a 7200rpm SATA HDD, with 4GB RAM and an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. So it should be really fast. I know I'll enjoy it, and I'll be coming here crying for help I'm sure. LOL! This almost 79 yr old great grandma just can't resist the newest gadgets!

Bobbie, congrats on the new toy.
I lucked in on the Boxing Day sales up here in the Great White and got a cheapo Acer Aspire 5517 for $299 at Futureshop. It too has Win7 Home Prem so will give me an opportunity to check out that OS. The bride wanted to update her older Toshiba and is basically just used for Mahjong, Hearts, Spades and solitaire. The LCD died on hers and I am not sure I wanted to spend the money for a new LCD. It was almost as much money as this new one. I'll wait for a junked one someplace with a good LCD and fix that one and sell it. Just got my big Acer laptop last year with Vista Ultimate so I'm good to go for a while yet.

I am a new PC owner-receiving an Acer 5532 wireless laptop for Xmas. The cable co. hooked me up yesterday w/my bundled service.
I'm a bit upset as the cable rep told me he'd help hook up my webcam & printer. This unit has the new 7 installed but no built in webcam. When he atempted to hook it into the system-a screen said it was not compatible with 7. Grrr.
Ravencajun..thank you for the link above to get me started. I haven't run a 'puter since 1996-and that was just my company's program, so I'm CLUELESS how to navigate this laptop! I have been using an msn2 unit and (prior to that- a webtv unit) for the past 12 years-
If there are any other links to a tutorial on how to use all of the functions..can anyone link me or will the above link be all I need?
My biggest fear is not knowing how to transfer my folders' contents from msn unit to the new pc. My new email is set up-haven't tried it yet. I did move all photos stored in my photos file,into a 'share photos' folder- which one MSN webber said:"Your favorites are already stored on Sky Drive Windows Live. They'll be mirrored on Sky Drive Windows Live on your computer at your present users address." (my msn addy or the new addy?) ??? Yeah right..so how do I transfer them to the PC?

I got that very same laptop for my husband for Christmas so I am very familiar with it. I go it set up for him before I gave it to him.
My prefered method of file transfer for a pc that is not in a network is to simply drag and drop or copy the files you want to move onto a usb flash drive and then plug that into the new pc and put them where you want them.
I have one of my best friends that only used the web tv and msn units and I used to help her all the time.
Just let us know if you run into problems, start a new thread of your own so you can get proper attention.
I would say your msn addy would likely be where they are mirrored.
I do not use a webcam so someone else will have to assist with that part.
the best place I have found in my working with that laptop for help and tutorials is the windows 7 forum

Hi Sharon, I am also a MSNTV2/WebTv user for 12 years plus a computer user for 10 of those 12 years. Are you planning on keeping your MSNTV unit online? Doing so will keep you connected to get help if you run into a problem with your computer. To me its worth the extra cost. I check out new websites and ALWAYS check my emails on the MSNTV and NEVER open them on my computer. Its been one of the best lines of defence to keep my computer safe!

It sounds like you were given a new email ID (email address) from MSN, but you can still access your MSNTV accounts through Windows Live as you mentioned, but I don't think there is anyway to transfer folders or files to your computer unless you do each link saved in your Favorites folders one at a time. Also keep in mind that all the photos you have saved via MSNTV have been sized down so their resolution won't be very good. There again you will have to download them one at a time. I suggest you visit the MSNTV ALT discussion group. There is alot of using at the discussion group that can answer your questions. For me its been 10 years and I think I had to start over with alot of stuff, but I also emailed links and photos to my new addy to transfer somethings.
