Sand Carpet Paintings and YouTube

I finally finished sorting and organizing my photos of the June 14th Sand Carpet paintings of Corpus Christi which are made every year up in the town of La Orotava not far from where we live. I've made a video of the photos, with a local male folk group singing in the background and uploaded it to YouTube. The quality is never as good as one hopes but it's my first video upload to that site and from now on I'll be using fullsize highres photos, hoping they'll be a little clearer. :-)

Here are some of the festival queens in their beautiful white mantillas walking in the procession, and a view of the procession assembling in the plaza on the night of the celebration. (These are taken from the TV.)

Sharon! That is amazing. I cannot believe those carpets are drizzled sand. It's quite astounding. I loved the slide show. Tenerife is so beautiful. The color of the ocean hardly seems real, it is so blue.

I love the Corpus Christi decorations from the windows!

All the sand pictures are very moving. Thank you for sharing this wonderful tradtion.

By the way, what happens if it rains??

They have an emergency setup of large tarpaulines on frames that they can put over the carpets while they're working on them if it looks like it's going to rain. These pics are from a previous year.

I don't know what would happen if it rained during the procession though LOL.
I guess it must have happened at some time. I'll have photos of the procession in the next album of the flower petal carpets that they walk on to get to the plaza where the sand painting are.

We're having our hardwoods redone this Thursday...we're having screening done, not sanding. Our floors were covered for over 25 years with carpeting. They looked really good except for two spots...one from watering a plant that had sat in one spot for years and one near the kitchen entrance. In speaking with the refinisher by phone, he said he could probably cover it or we could stain the entire floor...I'm opting for staining the entire floor (living, dining, hallway and steps because I'm not a light oak person...I'm going for a medium cherry. You might consider staining the floor, which will make the black spots blend in. It's going to cost $400 for 400 square feet plus stairs.

Can I paint my walls light gray with this dark brown carpet on Stairs?

Take a look at Revere Pewter. It is a gray that depends on the light in your house. it looks very light gray in some pictures but can also go well with some Browns. My daughter used it in a bathroom with a rich brown toned vanity and it looked great, but took on a tan undertone, while still looking gray.

Should I sand or mud over my painted walls?

I would take a wide blade drywall taping knife and exerting some force, scrape the majority of the bumps off. That should greatly lessen the sanding chore. Then sand the worst of it off and skim coat with drywall mud. Or apply a texture. Depending on the texture, and the results of knocking the bumps down, you might get away with having to only a bit or (or no) sanding. I love skip-trowel texture; I use it a lot but apply it with a light hand, aiming for a subtle texture. See Jane Drill on YouTube has a good instructional on skip-trowel texture.

Really nice job on the video Sharon.

Those carpets are breathtaking. I keep looking at them thinking "there's just no way". Amazing.
