Firefox opening slow

When I start my computer (OS: Win XP Media Edition) in the morning, Firefox 3.0.4 now takes an inordinately long time to open, like 3 minutes. Is this normal, and 3.0.4 is just slow, or is there something wrong with my computer?

After FF has opened for the first time, I can close it and it will open again at what I consider an acceptable speed, so long as I do not restart my computer. I have cable Internet and Web sites are coming up just as quickly as they always did.

I used AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy to ferret out any malware and ads, but the slowness persists.

I could go back to an earlier version of FF, but then I am afraid it would be lacking some critical security update.

if you hit your firefox update button you should be given the newest updated version 3.0.5 through your firefox auto update feature. That update may help.

do you have add-ons? sometimes load times are affected by some add-ons. Disabling them and re-enabling one at a time could help determine if it is one of them. Also what is your home page set at on firefox? if it is a heavily laden site it can often really increase the load time.

Thanks. I'll try the update. I do have add-ons, but up till I got 3.0.4, they had not caused any slowing that I could see. My home page is hotmail and has been hotmail for ages, so unless it suddenly changed at the same time I updated FF, I don't think it can be the problem.

I will update to 3.0.5 and see what happens, and if there is still trouble, I will try what you said with the add-ons. Possibly 3.0.4 gets indigestion from some of them that were all right in the past! =)

Those readings in the task manager look ok, I'm not sure where you are reading this from ( my memory is 1.37gb). In your first post you led me to believe the only slow down was the fact that internet pages are slow to open and that is why I addressed the browser. Is this the only problem? If the entire computer is slow follow through with ravens post. If it is just the pages opening slow we can give you a link for a different browser to try to see if that resolves it and then we can focus on the browser issue. Please run the SUPERAntiSpyware program in the link that ravencajun gave you follow the directions with the scan, after the scan completes open SUPERANTIspyware again in the window that opens CLICK on PREFERENCES at the top click on STATISTICS/LOG choose the latest log by date view the log, now copy and paste the log here so we can see it.

Maybee your IE is still there and you can use it at any time even with firefox open they work fine together, all you do is just click on the big blue IE icon on your desktop and it will open your IE browser do the same for firefox just click the firefox icon and it will open firefox. Which ever one you want to use you just click it's button. If you have the firefox icon on the desktop you can just grab it with your mouse hold down the button and drag the icon down there to the quick launch bar where your other icons are then let go and it should create a new icon for you down there too. When you want to go to the windows update site to get any windows updates you will have to do that using your IE browser because Microsoft will not accept firefox. That is the only place I ever use my IE now, I use firefox for everything else. This will not at all affect your Windows updates if you have them set to do automatically or to notify you. Only if you want to go to the actual windows update webpage then you need to click on your IE icon and use it. Your windows update notifier is not tied to your browser at all so this will not change that at all you will still see that update notifier the same as before. To do any updates for firefox itself it will occasionally check automatically for updates and if it finds some it will pop up and tell you that it has found an update for your firefox or for any add ons you may have then you click ok to let it do the updates, it will then tell you it has to restart firefox (not the whole pc just firefox) say ok and it will shut down firefox then re-open it and the updates will be installed automatically. Have you managed to get your home page set up on firefox now? If not what you need to do is just go to the webpage that you want to use as your home page, for example if you wanted to use this forum, while you are on the website here you would click up top tools> options then on the main tab there you will see where you have the options for setting your home page, just select the one that says use current page, that will set the page you are currently on as your home page, anytime you want to change it just go to the page you want to set and do the same thing again. You will want to in that same Options box click on the tabs tab and in there make sure these are selected, new pages should be opened in a NEW TAB then there are 4 options below that and you want to make sure the top 3 are selected. If you need to change the font type or the size of the fonts on the pages you can change that in Options >content tab When you want to clear your cache on firefox you go to Options> privacy then at the bottom is your option to clear the cache, when you click that it gives you more options/settings on exactly what you want it to clear, I always have mine clear cache and download history. you can also clear the cache by clicking on Tools > clear private data. Once you get the hang of firefox and start trying some of the wonderful add ons that are available for it you will wonder why you did not try it sooner.

And the needle being on a circular disk that one lifted off of the record and put up, over and back to be held in place above the arm that swung back and forth over the record but didn't move up or down? 1. Try importing the slides from the PPTX file rather than actually opening it. Click "Insert," then "Slides From Files." Browse to and select your file, then click "Insert All." This might extract the slides from the corrupted file and place them in a fresh file, though the formatting may be lost. Checking the "Keep source formatting" box might help. 2. Try opening the presentation in Word. Open Word and click "Open" in the "File" menu. RavenCajun: I installed 3.0.5, and presto, no more trouble. FF opened in less than 20 seconds. Thanks so much!

My situation is kind of similar. My FF2 opened in less than 30 seconds (complete with all my dozen or so add-ons), but upon upgrading to FF3 (3.0.4) things slowed down to a crawl (minimum 45 seconds to open). There was no change upon getting the latest update (3.0.5). Still sllloooowwwww.... (Opera opens in less than 15 and Iron (based on Chrome) in less than 4 !!) Once open, though, FF is its 'normal' surfing speed. Maybe my FF 3 has more indigestion than yours ! ;-)

Not2bright: No, no, MINE had more indigestion! LOL See in my first post where I mentioned that it was taking up around 3 minutes to open? I'm sorry that getting 3.0.5 hasn't fixed yours, though. Wonder what can be going on?

I installed FF2 several months ago and yesterday upgraded to 3.05.
My first site I open after my computer has been shut down has ALWAYS been slow to open. Whether it's my email, or GW, the first site takes minutes to open.

As long as 1 site stays open, my subsequent sites open in a flash. I use 3 add-ons, and uninstalled them initially to see if it improves the speed, but they have no significance on them.

Any ideas?

I'm afraid not. In my case, FF itself opened slow, not my home page. FF 3.0.5 is better than 3.0.4, but it is still slow when opening for the first time after I turn on my PC in the morning or "restart it" (slow, that is, as compared with its speed in coming up when I have not just turned on my computer). Once it has been turned on, then it comes up quickly.

I hope someone else will recognize your problem and be able to help you. Have you run software to see if your computer has gotten any malware?

Yep, ran my SuperAntiSpyware yesterday and my Avast is terrific.
Often Yahoo Groups is slow to open as well, but that's okay, I kind of expect that since it happens regularly. But I wish the sites wouldn't open so slow, initially.

one suggestion you might try getting ATF and running that for each of your browsers that could possibly help.
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune from http://www.atribune.org/index.php?option=c...5&Itemid=25 . Save it to your Desktop.

Run ATF Cleaner

* Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
* Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
* Click the Empty Selected button.
* Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
* Shutdown/restart the computer.
