One possibility is that Browser Defender is the problem, not IE or Firefox. If it were me, I'd uninstall Browser Defender and see if that solves the problem. If you quit having problems, you can then:
1) try to reinstall a new copy of Browser Defender, or
2) quit using Browser Defender since many antivirus products already offer the same type of protection.

Yes, you need to uninstall Broswer Defender. How are you trying to uninstall it? Try going to control panel, then remove programs and then from the list choose Browser Defender. If anything, try to install another browser like Google Chrome. Also, free avast is not really a good anti virus program. Try malwarebytes, this really gets all the junk out of your system.

Avast and Malwarebytes are not the same kind of programs at all. Avast is an anti-virus program (very highly rated by every review I read and from my own personal experience). Malwarebytes, on the other hand, is an on-demand malware scanner and remover and does not PREVENT malware, but is great at finding and removing it.

I've tried Norton and McAfee over the years and now have started using Avast. While no single AV program is perfect, so far I have no complaints about Avast and think it is very user friendly...and nothing has gotten past it yet. I also use Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware every few weeks as a double check, but rely on Avast for my main protection. It would be helpful to know why you don't think Avast is that good. Is it based on your own personal experiences, or what?

Though they may not come right out and say it, I think 2 of them prefer the MacOS. The female it seems, prefers VectorLinux, and squirrels.

If you are using only malwarebytes and NO antivirus program you definitely need to install an antivirus program, the 2 are not the same at all. AVAST is an excellent free antivirus program, I have it on all of my windows machines. I also have malwarebytes malware scanner on all of them which I update and run the scan weekly. Please do not confuse the issue they are very different programs and do very different tasks. You need Both an AV and malware removal programs.

Now clairdo you can not remove IE it is built into windows you will have one version of IE on the pc it may be 6,7 or 8. You should have the latest version of IE8 if you do not then you can go get it and install it, It is not possible to remove all versions of IE.
You can use firefox and IE at the same time or you can choose some other browser like Opera or Chrome, you can have all of them at once.

I would remove the browser defender and what ever program it is associated with, then once your browser is working properly you could consider if you want to re install that other program. It sounds like it is part of sypware doctor, remove that from add remove programs and see if your browsers work.

I'm glad you like Linux, but most people posting here don't have the interest in or ability to change to another OS. So we are trying to help people with what they have, not with what might work better for them in a tech world they will never inhabit.

I've seen several of your past posts on the subject of Linux and my reaction is: info is ok, evangelizing gets old. I'm not trying to pick a fight...just suggesting that, if you want to win converts, there are probably better approaches....
