Need Help Fast - Range Hood Same Size As Rangetop?
Comments (19)I can answer the question as to why you need to get MORE cfm's than you think you need. The reason you run the unit lower than the high has to do with the physics of the air in the duct. When you run the unit on the highest setting you create turbulence inside of the duct. This in turn leads to the HOGS returning to your kitchen " back at ya" as it were , rather than venting them out. This is a fact. This is why I have 1400 cfm in a 54" hood liner. I use it on medium and low. Mine is quiet even on high but I don't need the high setting. I have NEVER had to clean one spot of grease off of my wooden hood or the surrounding cabs/shelves. There is never any residue ever at all. I do have direct splatters on the wall behind the cooking pot at times when DH woks but other than that the HOGS are all removed completely. I read the article sited and had a problem with a lot of what he said. I don't have any unsealed fireplaces in my home and my waterheater is outside on the wall of the house . Since our house is an 1890 the problem of drafts and makeup air doesn't exist for me , which I am glad of . As far as I know there is no code here, or wasn't at the time of my install. I am glad of that too. We need the cfm's that I have since I see the result on the baffles every single Sunday when I clean them...they are all gresy greasy gressy. I also can't tell what is cooking in the kitchen at all even sometimes when I am standing in the kitchen. It sucks LOL. The other thing that bothered me about the article and the backdrafting etc was that the implication is that you run the hood for great lengths of time. In all of my experience that is not the case. Wok cooking requires minutes as does deep frying. I never have it on for more than possibly 30 min. and usually way less than that. So that is of course my experience of 4 1/2 yrs with this set up of a Tradewind LIner. I would like to hear from others. c...See Morebluestar platinum rangetop peeps need help with install asap
Comments (0)Just installed today. Cabinet maker made cabinet to cooktop specs, apparently, but as it is installed currently, when countertop is in place, the cooktop will stick up about an inch above the counter on the sides.... is that how it is supposed to be? I thought it would be flush to the counter. Will this look okay?...See MoreNeed Advice and Installation Pro on Wood Pellet Boiler
Comments (11)Leaving aside the carbon issue, other pollutants from pellet/wood can be an issue. Personally I would suggest looking at heat pumps or possibly hybrid heat pump/propane. This would depend on running numbers on relative cost, whether you can find a good installer, and whether your current hydronic system could run well or need work (possibly need more/larger radiators). Size of home, how well insulated, local electricity cost, local climate etc., are all factors. In your relatively mild climate, may be able to run on heat pump with straight electric/gas backup only a few days a year....See MorePro Gas Rangetop Vs. Induction?
Comments (16)The OP question is like asking which do you like better, vanilla or chocolate? There is no right or wrong answer, people just have their preferences. Though there are some posters on this forum who will get overly invested and heated on this question (cough, JuneKnow, Eam44, et al). I have had both types, and prefer a gas range. The only thing I like about induction is how very easy it is to clean. I didn't like it otherwise. Yet other people love it and wouldn't have anything else or ever go back to gas cooking. The OP needs to test drive an induction cooktop; he may love it, or not. "I'm in the Milwaukee area and only one place I know of has an operational display" This doesn't sound right - so none of the Grand Appliances stores in the area has a working one to try? Or, just drive the hour ten minutes to Abt Appliances in Glenview. This is an expensive purchase, it's worth that drive. Plus, Abt Appliances is so cool, it's worth the trip just to see all they have going on. Call ahead, perhaps you can set up an appointment for a cooking demonstration. Abt used to have them frequently, but with Covid, maybe not. Edited to add: You could also try purchasing an induction hob, and see how you like induction that way. It's not quite the same as a high-quality induction cooktop, but will give you an idea. Also, as Patricia Colwell mentioned above, you can have a gas range and an induction hob on the side.
