If you have a KA stand mixer, do you need a hand mixer?

If you have a KitchenAid stand mixer, do you still have a small handheld mixer? I have a tiny kitchen and am trying to downsize! If so, what brand? Thank you.

Yes, still use my hand mixer and immersion blender. I use my KA mixer for my heavy duty stuff-bread doughs, cookie doughs,etc. I use the HM for cake batters, pancake batters, lighter stuff. I'll use the immersion blender when pureeing hot soups in the stockpot or chopping small amounts of nuts or herbs in the chopping cup. NancyLouise

Thank you. I do have an immersion blender too and a regular blender that also has a food processor bowl but I have yet to use that. So far I have left the KA on the counter to encourage me to use it on a more regular basis but I think if I end up putting it away, a hand mixer would be the way to go because it would be so much easier "to take out".

Another stand mixer owner here. Like meskauskas, I have a Viking stand mixer. Santa (er, Mr. Marv) bought it for me for Christmas. It was a replacement for an old KA that went to mixer heaven. I researched many brands and models and decided that the Viking would fit my needs. I have the 5 qt/800 watt model, which is perfect for me. I decided that the 7qt. model would be overkill, since I usually bake quite frequently as opposed to large quantities (I find it very therapeutic) and there are only two of us at home. I bake alot of bread and do desserts at least twice a week, as well. It can handle a double batch of bread dough with ease, and makes quick work of cake batter, cookie dough, etc. King Arthur Flour/Baker's Catalogue is a good place to start if you have questions. They are very knowledgeable and use many products in their test kitchens. They will give you alot of feedback, answer questions and ask you questions (like how many times a week do you bake, what do you bake, how many people are in your household). I would suggest calling their toll-free number and ask to speak to one of their bakers. It might be a good place to start. One of the criteria for a replacement mixer was how much room it would take up, and how easy it would be to move. The Viking has wheels on the back, so it's very easy to maneuver around the countertop. I'm extremely happy with my choice. I also have a food processor, which I use for shredding veggies, pureeing soups, etc. I very rarely use it for baking ingredients, except for the occasional pie crust, where you need speed and little kneading. I have a GE 350 Watt stand mixer and I've been thinking about replacing it. I like the mixer and don't use it very often (as I've said before, I don't cook much anymore). When I do use it, it seems like I spend all my time stopping it to scrape the bottom and sides. I've looked in the manual and don't see where the beater can be adjusted. I'm not sure either if it would be worth the money to replace it since my mixer has more watts than the Artisan. Like I said I don't use it much, but when I do use a mixer I want one that is a help not a pain. And maybe I'm just wanting a new toy....LOL.

Grainlady, that's a good idea to use the hand mixer to cut in shortening. I'm going to try that for Thanksgiving pies. I also use the hand mixer to mash potatoes, don't try to do that in the blender, LOL, Ashley did that. It doesn't work well.... Ashley also likes homemade hot chocolate, the old fashioned kind with milk, sugar, Hershey's cocoa. She'll whip that with the hand mixer and says it makes it creamier. I also use the hand mixer when I have something already in the KitchenAid, those marathon baking days. Love that big Kitchenaid Nancy gave me though, it's a champ for cookies. for years I used nothing but a wooden spoon, and it worked fine for everything, but it sure was a lot of work sometimes and I can't imagine trying to bake all the recent wedding cakes without it, it's been a godsend! The KA does the cakes while the Magic Mill does the white breads, the zojirushi does the whole grain stuff and I feel almost like a bakery, LOL. Annie Annie

my 'thrift store' KA stand mixer!!

Don't usually brag... but I will about some of my thrift store finds. A Cuisinart food processor, bought in hopes of just having an extra bowl, ended up being larger/stronger model... $8! LeCreueset square grill pan, blue enamel outside (NOT chips or cracks), non-enameled cast iron inside (tiniest bit of easily removable schmutz in ridges... $5! Cuisinart burr coffee grinder & ice cream maker (wish I always had ROOM in freezer for insert)... at website about $50 or more... at thrift store maybe $5 each. BRAND NEW KA digital (7 speed) hand mixer... $69.99 on box... $5 for me. Spend a HUGE amount (for me at least) on a BIG lot of Fiestaware at a yard sale. A dozen dinner plates, salad/sandwich plates, mugs, probably 20 bowls (soup/cereal) and a few extra items... $50. If an item looks CLEAN, barely/rarely used... in box with manuals... and CHEAP... I'm interested. Bought a bread machine at a yard sale... cuz never had on, was curious, and it was still TAPED in plastic in box. Used it for a while, got bored with it, cleaned it up REALLY well, and donated to one of favorite thrift stores. Like they say, one WOMAN'S trash is another WOMAN'S treasure!

Only YOU can really answer that question. It depends upon the type and quantity of cooking you do.

I have 3 kitchen aids and one hand mixer and yes, I need them all. The KA's are all different models and sizes, so have different uses. The hand mixer is great for quick things like whipping cream or for when you don't want to get the big machine dirty.

I agree about getting the big machine dirty. I use my KA frequently, but sometimes I just want to whip something together without all the "fuss."

Rarely use a hand mixer. BUT when I found a 7-speed, KA hand-mixer (BRAND new, in box) at a thrift store for $5... I jumped on it!

I use the hand mixer more than I use the stand mixer, except that I keep the cheese grating attachment on the stand mixer, and that gets used almost every day. I also have the meat grinder and ice cream maker attachments, but those do not get used as much. My immersion blender (also KA) has a whisk attachment, and that is great for whipping small amounts of cream, but can get messy if not careful.

I mix pancake batter by hand - I never thought of using a mixer for that.
