Question about KA and/or Cuisinart stand mixers?

Is one brand better than the other when it comes to making sure everything is mixed from the bottom? I have a stand mixer, which isn't in the same league as these, that I have to stop to scrape everything off of the bottom and down the sides. It's almost to the point I think the hand mixer would be faster with all the scraping.

I have a KA and have never noticed a need to scrape the bottom, but definitely need to scrape down the sides.

Same as Fenworth. If the tilt head KA model isn't adjusted properly, it can miss the bottom. Do you have a Sunbeam Mixmaster or something of the like, Pam?

This puppy appears to be a new product so there's not that much out there on it yet, but I did find out some possible helpful info: Cooks illustrated reviewed hand mixers in DEC 2006 and rated the Cuisinart very highly. They reviewed stand mixers in Mar 2008 and the Cuisinart garnered their top rating. So while there are no guarantees, the interpolation of these two reviews is very promising for your hybrid mixer. There was a positive review on Amazon.com which I've linked below for you. One caution with brand new products - Often it's better to buy them in the second year of production after they're had a chance to correct minor (or sometimes major) defects in the product line. KA Commercial vs Pro-Line Stand Mixers ?

Thought I'd follow-up for anyone who stumbles across this. It appears that the two commercial units are identical except for the bowl that comes with them. The Pro-Line is nearly identical except it is not NSF (not an issue for most home users) and some of the gearbox is plastic rather than metal. Appears to be same motor & controller and all attachments/bowls are interchangeable between all 3 of these. The commercial are apparently just a tad quieter (better gearbox?) and have a longer and heavier power cord. The pouring shield will NOT fit on the 8qt bowl, but will on the 7qt bowl. The commercial 8qt bowl should fit on the pro-line.

Another stand mixer owner here. Like meskauskas, I have a Viking stand mixer. Santa (er, Mr. Marv) bought it for me for Christmas. It was a replacement for an old KA that went to mixer heaven. I researched many brands and models and decided that the Viking would fit my needs. I have the 5 qt/800 watt model, which is perfect for me. I decided that the 7qt. model would be overkill, since I usually bake quite frequently as opposed to large quantities (I find it very therapeutic) and there are only two of us at home. I bake alot of bread and do desserts at least twice a week, as well. It can handle a double batch of bread dough with ease, and makes quick work of cake batter, cookie dough, etc. King Arthur Flour/Baker's Catalogue is a good place to start if you have questions. They are very knowledgeable and use many products in their test kitchens. They will give you alot of feedback, answer questions and ask you questions (like how many times a week do you bake, what do you bake, how many people are in your household). I would suggest calling their toll-free number and ask to speak to one of their bakers. It might be a good place to start. One of the criteria for a replacement mixer was how much room it would take up, and how easy it would be to move. The Viking has wheels on the back, so it's very easy to maneuver around the countertop. I'm extremely happy with my choice. I also have a food processor, which I use for shredding veggies, pureeing soups, etc. I very rarely use it for baking ingredients, except for the occasional pie crust, where you need speed and little kneading. I have the Magic Mill. Purchased it from King Arthur. I went to their store & we worked all of the major brands for an entire day. I'd been using a Bosch for 20+ years but after using them side-by-side that day...switched to Magic Mill. I've now had it about six years & have never regretted my decision. The Magic Mill will handle 22-24 cups of flour. I'm also impressed with the lack of splatter when mixing liquids. A couple years ago, I made 6 white chocolate/macadamia nut bread puddings at the same time. I had over 2 dozen eggs & enough milk/cream to fill the bowl to just under the rolled rim. I held my breathe & turned the dial...stood back in case eggs flew everywhere. Not a drop left that bowl! It was sorta fun to watch those rollers mixing the custard. Sorry, can't help with the Cuisinart mixer but I have one of their food processors & am happy. /tricia

I love my KA Mixer and I just bought it late last year. I also have a vintage KA Mixer and I've never had to scrape the bottom of the bowl with this model either. However, I do scrape down the sides, usually once during a mixing.

I have a KA and yes I have to scrape the sides occasionally. You would think they could invent one that could do it all... :)

Most KA mixers have a beater to bowl adjustment. Here is a link to a video showing how to do it.

It could be that your mixer is just out of adjustment.

I have a GE 350 Watt stand mixer and I've been thinking about replacing it. I like the mixer and don't use it very often (as I've said before, I don't cook much anymore). When I do use it, it seems like I spend all my time stopping it to scrape the bottom and sides. I've looked in the manual and don't see where the beater can be adjusted. I'm not sure either if it would be worth the money to replace it since my mixer has more watts than the Artisan. Like I said I don't use it much, but when I do use a mixer I want one that is a help not a pain. And maybe I'm just wanting a new toy....LOL.

Most companies measure wattage by input rather than output, so you could potentially have a higher-wattage mixer that's actually less powerful. The mixer companies like to mislead people with numbers.

Wattage isn't as important as torque anyway. It's like horsepower. A Ferrari has lots more horsepower than a John Deere. But the John Deere's going to be a lot better at pulling.

Carol I have to agree with you on the wattage information, but is there anyway of knowing which mixer is the more powerful?
