What is the extension of the attached files? Without it, you would have to guess what program would be best to associate the files with. Also, if for some reason the files do not have an extension then nothing will open them until you add the correct one.

A new Dell computer with WinXP properly installed should already be set to view most types of graphic files (like photo's) without having to set a file association.

I am inclined to assume that the person who sent you the files messed up.

What Email client are you using?

By the way, to find the folder options open the control panel. I wouldn't go making changes without knowing what you're doing though. So provide us with some more information so we can help.

Maggie,

Have a friend who sends me attachments with photos and for some reason the extension name is followed by the size of the file. For example img984.jpg(235k)

They won't open because of no file association. What I do is save the attachment to a folder and then rename it to img984.jpg thereby deleting the (235K). Then it opens ok.

Bob

Yes, that is what I ended up doing Bob. Thankyou, I went to Microsoft and they told me that that message is usually seen with the older ME and windows 98. I did get them to open by doing what you said and like klaa2 said I didn't want to changing anything so thankyou to both of you.

Yes, it will be necessary to determine the format the pictures are created in. And perhaps an editing to the file name is in order. However, barring an error by the sender I am wondering if they are just not just an out of the ordinary format.

The most common format is jpeg, but there is software which will create pictures in bmp, tiff, or gif to name a few, and commercially dedicated software such as Kodak and Nokia.

Maggie by chance do you have Irfanview installed on your system? If not, may I suggest you download it along with all available plugins. The application has an extend list of supported formats. During installation you can pick and choose, or select all, formats you wish to associate with it. To make alterations later is just a couple of simple clicks. All this, and it's user friendly and free.

Waiting to hear from you on the format of the attachments.

Good luck! Enjoy!
