Unable to open Microsoft Word program

Hi, I ran a malwarebytes scan just to make sure I had no problems. When the scan was finished , the results showed

Files Infected:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\WINWORD.EXE (Backdoor.Bot). I checked to allow the MB program to remove backdoor. bot. Afterwards, I attempted to open my Word program and was unable to. I restored the backdoor.bot file and am still unable to open program. What can I do ?

Try a system restore back to your last restore date

I will try system restore, but what do I do about the backdoor.bot? I actually read a post in the malwarebytes forum that makes me wonder if this is a false positive.

Bestlawn! I could have asked you over on KT! I had two lines; one I managed to delete, but I've fumbled around so much I cannot remember what I did! Yes, I think the enter/return is what seems to trigger it. When I try to select the line, a thin vertical highlight strip appears on the left above, through, and below the line, but it will not delete. I've spent the last 20-30 minutes trying to figure it out, searching "help." But it's no big problem, I can scroll it down to the blank page and not print that page. And now that I know how to draw lines w/o triggering the other line, I'll be ok. I suppose 2007 is ok when one gets used to it, but it sure takes up a lot of time getting to that point. It has a default of 1.5 spacing, which is not that good for me. Thanks...you're the "best!"

Sorry for the delay. Cablevision is my internet carrier - and I access the internet through Optimum (have phone, tv and on line service with Optimum. When I send and receive emails my address would be: .....@optonline.net. I received an email with an attachment which I opened and I then in turn sent it to Microsoft Word to make some changes - which I did - but then couldn't send it back to my email address and/or to the person who sent it to me Thanks.

My gut reaction is that over time computers become slower as, for lack of a better description, get "clogged." It might not be a bad idea to back up critical data and then do a fresh install of the operating system and applications. You should also make sure that Office is being updated. I want to say that with Office 2000, it needs to be updated manually. You'll also need the original disc to do the updates. Of course, you should have current anti-virus software running and run malware software on a regular basis.

For employers of any size, the fees paid for Office are a small fraction of the retail price an individual would face. For individuals, a free choice should serve most purposes. For a workplace other than very small, or an employee of a fair sized place who wants work compatibility in using a personal machine, MS is most frequently the choice.

I have also read that but can't confirm it from malwarebytes, why not join an ask the question there.

That file winword.exe is running from the programs file folder where it should be, so everything is pointing to a false positive.

In the link below is Virus Total site go to the site, look for the browse function there, what you do is browse to the file winword.exe on your computer if it's still there and up - load the file to that site and see what the results are... It will be scanned by several virus tools and create a log for you.

Are you sure you updated malwarebytes before you ran it.

So lets see what malwarebytes says, and virus total, then if needed we can send you to another forum.

I really appreciate your suggestions. I did go to the Virus total website and entered the Winword file to be analyzed. The result was 0% which I assume means that none of the sites thought it was a virus or malware. I also used system restore to go to a date before the problem started. It didn't help . I attempted to undo the restoration and was unable to restore it. I don't know what's wrong. I'm really concerned. When I attempt to open the Microsoft Word program , a black box that looks like a Dos file, pops up for a second and then disappears. I'm not sure what to do.

Maybe try opening Word in safe mode. Sometimes that will repair the application. If it desn't work, you may need to re-install Office.

Click Start, click Run and type in "WINWORD.EXE /safe" without the quotes and noting the space between E and / (copy and paste works great too). Click OK.

After opening in Safe Mode, close Word and reopen using the All Programs path.(Start-->All Programs---> Microsoft Office ---> Microsoft Word)
Another thought. Have you tried going through All Programs to open Word in case it's just a corrupted shortcut (desktop icon)?

Reinstalling office would be the way to go as Pam has indicated also try her instructions, It sounds as though WINWORD.EXE has been deleted the main executable for word.

Do you have your office disk? If not here is a shot in the dark, run the program in the link below it recovers files..
