New Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.60

A new version of MBAM has been released and should be installed for complete benefit. One of the reported changes is "Malwarebytes Chameleon technology gets Malwarebytes Anti-Malware running even when blocked by infection". This could be very important in the event of an infection.

I do not know if the upgrade will come automatically through the MBAM updater as I did it independently.

I opened MBAM as I normally do each week and clicked on update. After completion of the update download, a message box advised a new MBAM was downloaded; instructions were given for installing it. Couple of clicks and it was done.

Raven - I will - I'll go back and report and see what else they think I should do. Thank you. Damccoy - I wish I knew but I'm 99% sure it's not an email - I'm super careful and don't open anything I don't recognize. But I'm leary of StumbleUpon, even though I like it. It just takes one creep to 'get you' and it's just too much roaming around the net. Also, I use FB and like it but again, unless you're pretty sure of your 'friends' you can get caught in that web. One thing I wondered about though besides the above~ I still can't open my Windows Mail and haven't given up on finding the original password, but that aside. Someone said why not just use FF so I was trying to update my bookmarks (favorites) and under a couple of folders were extensive sites - i.e. plants, orchids, politics, etc. Some were no longer there and opened instead on a different site or page. Though I didn't explore, you didn't know until you opened it that it wasn't what you thought you had saved. Hope that makes sense. That could have been an entry for a virus. If I find out anything else, I'll report back - count on it. Thanks Also, I've installed (again, they disappeared) Spybot-Search & Destroy & Malwarebytes Anti-Malware & still have CCleaner - what else should I have? I believe Windows Defender is on too. Anything else? I forgot what HijackThis is for - can someone tell me and if I need it or anything else? Really spooked now.....

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!! Your advice worked and my computer is almost back to normal. Goldie: that was my first thought, too (LOL)! Mary Lu, it wasn't you at all; just me trying to do too much :~) I basically just followed Camp56 and Ideefixe's instructions and it worked! I can't thank you both enough for taking the time to walk me through it!! Rose: the thumb drive idea is a good one for future problems. I never would have thought of that. Thanks! Olychick: you know, I'm embarrassed to say that I had no idea about that Restore feature. In the past, whenever I've had a problem DH has fixed it for me. I need to be more proactive. Allison: thanks for those recommendations. WIP: yes, they use a small outside IT firm; nobody in-house except DH. I was going to call them next if I couldn't find a solution here. Oakley: you're kidding?!? I made a mistake earlier saying that I deleted Norton, it was MacAffee, which I've had for quite a while. It ran every day, scanning for problems but never found a one . . . and I KNEW something was wrong before all of this. That's why I was looking for anti-virus programs. Hmmmmm. Graywings: Thanks! I'd forgotten that GW even had a computer forum and had never checked it out. But, I will definitely keep it on mind for future problems. Chickadee: Haha . . . that's for sure! @harry_wild "know that in order to prevent a new virus or malware for your on going service; you have to get it from Microsoft in the first place!" You keep stating this, but provide no evidence. Why don't you provide some proof of it, if you think it's true. Just stating something doesn't make it true. . @ wolfie46 "Is there any problem running AVG and malwarebytes at the same time on a computer with windows 8.1?" Shouldn't be any problem. Although it would probably be a good idea not to run scans by each, at the same time.

A basic Google search using the keywords "malwarebytes chameleon" (sans quotes) reported a lot of current information the user will have to ferret through to be completely informed. The link below gives a presentation of what to expect if Chameleon use is warranted.

Started to do the update and ran into a problem. On my update/computer there is a stop sign with a hand on it telling me to run a free scan for Windows Error --started to BUT then I noticed up in the upper right hand corner these words--Registery Booster--I stopped the scan and thought I better check to see it I really needed to do the scan--or if someone was trying to sell me something.
Hope this makes sense. I think the name was Blu-xx can't remember.

You dont want that scan.
If you have it run CCleaner to clear out the temporary internet files & also might want to look in the control panel add/remove or programs & features for Blue something reg scanner. Uninstall it if you see it.

If you have Malwarebytes already.. just go to its updates tab and press the update button. You will get the new version.

To avoid possible confusion for newer members,

MWAB v1.60 is the current application version.

The current database version (definitions/signature file) is 2011.12.31.04

They are very agressive with updates. It is not unusual for multiple daily releases. .04 was the current version at 2:06 p.m. .06 could very well be here before the end of the day.

To reinforce my comment as to how aggressive they are with updates, here it is January 1st at 10:05 a.m. and the current update is 2012.01.01.02. Two updates already today.

Not to "beat a dead horse to death" but to show how important it is to regularly check for MBAM updates, there was a third update yesterday and right now at 9:18 a.m. this morning they are providing v2012.01.02.02

When I checked here at around 10am. I saw DA's last post, so went and got .02.

Just out of curiosity, I checked again a few minutes ago and got .04.

I just checked on your referral. I am going to try to remember to check how many new "fingerprints" are added just to see how much has changed. From v.02 to v.04 there has been an addition of 120 fingerprints.
