I've been running AVG Free for years on XP, no problem. Yesterday I installed MalwareBytes and this morning AVG loaded but didn't run. Actually, neither did MalwareBytes. I uninstalled MalwareBytes, rebooted and lo and behold, AVG works now just like it used to. Conclusion: MalwareBytes is a pile of donkey's doo doos. I don't care how good it may be at removing malware if it conflicts with other programs. Buh-bye MalwareBytes!

Damccoy - I wish I knew but I'm 99% sure it's not an email - I'm super careful and don't open anything I don't recognize. But I'm leary of StumbleUpon, even though I like it. It just takes one creep to 'get you' and it's just too much roaming around the net. Also, I use FB and like it but again, unless you're pretty sure of your 'friends' you can get caught in that web. One thing I wondered about though besides the above~ I still can't open my Windows Mail and haven't given up on finding the original password, but that aside. Someone said why not just use FF so I was trying to update my bookmarks (favorites) and under a couple of folders were extensive sites - i.e. plants, orchids, politics, etc. Some were no longer there and opened instead on a different site or page. Though I didn't explore, you didn't know until you opened it that it wasn't what you thought you had saved. Hope that makes sense. That could have been an entry for a virus. If I find out anything else, I'll report back - count on it. Thanks Also, I've installed (again, they disappeared) Spybot-Search & Destroy & Malwarebytes Anti-Malware & still have CCleaner - what else should I have? I believe Windows Defender is on too. Anything else? I forgot what HijackThis is for - can someone tell me and if I need it or anything else? Really spooked now.....

I completed the instructions, and had just copied the combofix log and was about to post it here when the screen suddenly went black and then the blue screen came on. it sounds like you have an infection that has blocked you from getting programs that would try to clean it, see if it lets you go to any of these online scans to run. ESET Online Scanner BitDefender Online Scanner try this link to get the direct exe of malwarebytes it should open directly on your pc as a download box for the mbam exe. save it to your pc download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program. * At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish. * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. * Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan. * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results. * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. * When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt * Please post contents of that file in your next reply. if it will not let you run it as mbam.exe you may have to rename it, let me know
