I've been running AVG Free for years on XP, no problem. Yesterday I installed MalwareBytes and this morning AVG loaded but didn't run. Actually, neither did MalwareBytes. I uninstalled MalwareBytes, rebooted and lo and behold, AVG works now just like it used to. Conclusion: MalwareBytes is a pile of donkey's doo doos. I don't care how good it may be at removing malware if it conflicts with other programs. Buh-bye MalwareBytes!

malwarebytes is not an antivurus program it is an anti malware program and will find much much more than your antivirus will, there is a free version but you can also purchase it for a minmal fee which gives you lifetime protection and will enable it to do auto updates and scheduled scans. I would definitely get and use malwarebytes it is one of the top products we use on the support forums to clean the hardest infections. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop. * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program. * At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish. * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. * Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan. * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results. * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.  The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt  Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply. There are free antivirus programs that are available that are just as good as or in some cases better than ones you pay big bucks for, the same companies that give those free also do sell a more full featured version so they are available for sale, I prefer to support companies that will go above and beyond and provide a free version for those who can not afford to pay for a product, they certainly do not have to do that but it is an extremely helpful thing to do, the more people we can keep from getting infected the better off we all are. I personally use AVAST and find it an excellent product. People often try to push the big name products especially when they are making a profit from selling them, installing them and maintaining them. The decision should be a good informed and researched one made by the pc user.

I completed the instructions, and had just copied the combofix log and was about to post it here when the screen suddenly went black and then the blue screen came on. It says: A Problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. My answer is that every pc should have malwarebytes on it, it catches more than most any other malware scanner out there. It should not be slowing you down however because it is an on demand scanner and is only using resources when you are actually running the manual scan. Do you mean it becomes slow when you are running a scan or it is always slow? You might try doing an uninstall of it then a re-install. but since it only comes on and uses resources when you actually run a scan with it I can not see why it would have any impact at all on the pc. It could be just coincidental that it slowed at that time could be something else contributing, I would look at the task manager and see what seems to be using the most CPU resources.
