Please advise on Laptop!!!

Want to get a new laptop. Was looking at a Sony. Never had one. Had Gateway. Can anyone suggest a laptop for about $1000. I really would appreciate the input. There is so much advertise for Xmas and I am totally last. I need it to replace a desktop. I have a Mac already. I need a PC for my husband. Happy Holidays.

You did not mention what the laptop would be used for so here are some general suggestions from Consumer Reports, listed by screen size. They liked these >$1k 13" Sony Models: the Vaio VGN-Z540 and the VGN-SR190. They also liked these 14" models: HP dv4t and Lenovo Thinkpad SL400. Among the 15" laptops, they liked Toshiba Satellite A305-S6872 and Lenovo Ideapad Y530. For desktop replacements, they liked HP dv7t (> $1k) and the Toshiba Satellite L350-ST2121.

The 13" Dell Inspiron 13 was not highly rated but is slightly less than $1k. Battery life is a problem. Also, Toshiba Satellite U405D-S2848 is 13" and under $1K but was recently discontinued.

Desktop replacements normally mean that it wont be dragged around too much and these are normally the ones with larger screens ie 16", 17" or larger.
Check your local fliers as there are some pretty decent sales on. Toshiba is an excellent choice if you can find one under $1000. I currently have an Acer which has been really good to me for the last 9 months, but their return(service) policy if required is somewhat crappier than Toshiba and IBM.

Just reading through the manual it sounds like the camcorder can connect with a USB cable. I don't know if Sony's software is compatible with whatever version of Windows you're using now. The other option is there seems to be a output jack that provides composite video but left/right audio. To use that, you'd need some kind of video capture device, which are lesson common than they used to be. Pinnacle and Roxio seem to still offer them.

I also am not a fan of loft beds. To add yet another reason to those already listed, I don't think that the desk area is really very useful for today's students. The needs are changing at a lighting pace with more and more emphasis on using computers and the internet for daily homework assignments, communication with other teachers, classmates, etc. We bought large computer desks with a keyboard pullouts and hutch about 4 years ago; but for DS in 9th grade he now uses a laptop and we plan to upgrade DD in 7th to a laptop before school resumes in the fall. At that time I did also get DD a captain's bed that is raised a bit higher than the average bed and has drawer storage below. It works great for her and it a great space saver in a smaller room so that I could eliminate the need for a dresser. If I were to get the loftbed for a teenager, I much prefer the ones with the sofas below as it's a nice place to sit and hang with their friends, read do honework, etc.

Miele service stinks - Please advise!

It's so funny. I've gone through 10 years of nightmares with Viking and slowly have been replacing with Miele. The problems go away. Recently, I needed service on my Miele oven. Their tech came to the house in his little red van, fixed the oven (out of waranty) in 30 minutes and I could not have asked for better service. He's worked for them for 7 years and brings a laptop which helps do the diagonostics. I don't know why they let anyone who isn't a specialist do any service. Once you see their guys do a repair it is a world of difference. A few weeks ago, my washer stopped heating properly. I called and, again, the tech arrived on the minute and fixed the problem quickly. I have a 5-year waranty, which I bought last year on Cyber Monday at a discount. Yesterday, our 10 y.o. Viking built in refrigerator was replaced with a Miele. I registered it online and also called tech support to ask a question about the ice maker. They are open 12 hours a day with call centers on both coasts and they've talked me through many issues. While I was on the phone, I got a permanent discount coupon code for any accessories and for the fridge waranty if I purchase online. I'm waiting until Cyber Monday to see if I can get an additional discount. So AR Kiki, if I can suggest this, register your new oven. Then call them and ask a "question" and see if you can get a coupon code. Like many companies, service is different from place to place. But mine has been 4 stars -- with benefits. You've gotten good advice here. One fan will be plenty for your room. You might even consider adding a light to the fan to provide overhead lighting when needed instead of recessed lights. You could install switched outlets for lamps or wall sconces for your ambient lighting, which is nicer to relax with than recessed lights, unless you put them on dimmers. There would be money saved if you skip the recessed lights and dimmer switch. We rarely use our recessed lights to have accent lighting at night, or to watch television. The spaces between the furniture are too tight to walk through the room with a platter of food or to pull out a chair at the table. You already figured out that the French doors and step are inoperable against the back of the loveseat. How much are you able to extend the length of your room? With a fixed width the 1'4" behind the sofa(loveseat) is too small to walk through. Could you push it back against the wall? Your table area is too tight to pull out a chair with 2' and 2'4" on some sides. Is it possible to use a smaller table for four instead of six? Using a smaller round table with chairs at 2 o'clock, 4 o'clock, 6 o'clock and 8 o'clock may work instead of pushing them back against the walls. One or two club chairs angled close to the corners of the French doors might work instead of the loveseat at the entrance. You have done a great job drawing the room and measurements. I don't have a program to help you try out different furniture, but hope some sweet soul will come along to assist you. As it looks the room is not large enough to carry out two rooms of furniture, unless you can expand your length. It will be fun watching your progress. This will be a lovely addition to your home.

This is what I got last year and has been great so far.
Prices are in Canadian so would be somewhat cheaper Stateside. For the bucks, it has an excellent processor, amt of memory, HDD, GPU (video chip). Might be something comporable with US versions at Acer.com

I got DD a 14" HP Pavillion Entertainment (DV2910US) laptop for under $850 (plus software and accessories). A bit more for a wireless router and she was in business for schoolwork and gaming.
Excellent customer service got her back up and running when an apparent software glitch, or virus, caused it to refuse to boot up. (Don't forget the anti-virus)
