Tenerife Video

I just received a travel brochure in my e-mailbox which contains a good 6 minute video about Tenerife. I'm not having any luck trying to isolate the video itself from the advertising but you can just ignore the ad although it does give some nice little descriptions about different parts of the island. (I don't work for them) LOL.

It's one of the best videos I've seen lately that shows something of the north of the island and the sweeping Orotava Valley, where I live... (around 49 on the timer at the bottom) and it shows a meal with wrinkled salted potatoes (the chef says they steam, not boil.. theirs in salted water) as well as goat's cheese with mojo. That hotel is in our neighbourhood.

There are also some stunning views taken from the top of the Teide volcano. You can see why some science fiction movies have been filmed up there in the lunar volcanic landscape.

You can click it to full screen by the little icon at the bottom, next to the volume control. The commentary is in English.

The same video is available on You Tube but in poorer quality and with flashing adverts, so this video is best.

Is the volcano still active? When was the last time it blew? Do you ever get earthquakes? The reason I'm asking is because our local doomsayers say that a large earthquake in the Canary Islands could cause a tsunami travelling across the Atlantic towards the US east coast basically drowning us! I've seen shows both on the Weather Channel & the History Channel. So, is your volcano safely 'dead'? :)

Sure looks like a beautiful place!

Thanks all...yes there is a mess over on the other side of the island calculated at around $12 million damage so far, not to mention repairing private businesses and roads that were torn up by the water. Eileen the outside kitty (Tigger) goes into the carport and either sleeps on top of my car or in towel-lined hutches that I made from clothes hampers laid on their sides and leave around the garden under shelter. He has a fur coat now so thick that he looks like a bear, so I imagine he doesn't get cold. I've invited him into the house but he's a real outdoor man and doesn't like the indoors. LOL. It's clear this morning but very cold. I bet there's snow on the mountain. Tigger SharonCb

Yes that Spain vs Italy would have been the semi-final Mitch. The winning goal against Germany was scored in minute 32 of the game which was the last quarter hour of the first part. I didn't see it as I went to a video conf I had with my brother (in Canada) on Skype and as he had his TV on he said Spain had already scored a goal. Well I saw the replays of that goal anyway LOL. Here's a pic of the flag out the window of the cockpit as the plane was landing in Madrid with the homecoming team. The plane was already on the ground when they opened the window LOL! And here's a short one minute video made by a Spanish TV channel on the link below, (has full screen option) showing the goal and the excitement afterwards. You can see the Spanish royal family, Queen Sofia (in a red suit) and King Juan Carlos (navy jacket & striped tie) jumping up in their excitement as well. Lars it seems there is no one chart which describes the temperatures accurately here as there is such a difference from one end of the island to another. The south is much warmer and Santa Cruz - the capital city about a half hour drive from here on the east coast - has another temperature range again. Here's the official temps for Santa Cruz from the Spanish Office of the Environment: Coldest month Dec....mean temperature is 66.2 F. (19C) Warmest month Aug.....mean temp is 77F. (25C) Yearly mean temp is 70.16 F. (21.2C) That's taken from a study 1971 to 2000. Another range of temperatures comes from the north airport - Los Rodeos, and still another from the top of the volcano area. Sufficient to say that it's shirtsleeve weather during the day most of the year - except when it rains, or if you're hiking up on top of the mountain when there's snow LOL. One of my ex-work colleagues in Ibiza lived for years in Costa Rica and her sons now live permanently in San Jose. She told many stories of her interesting life there. One of my cousin's sons has also settled somewhere in Costa Rica. I hear many Canadians have retired there because of the beautiful climate and peaceful life. Lars if you like hiking then this is hikers' paradise. Our German friends love coming here and spending many days climbing all around the ravines and the volcanic area. There are many hiking groups here which organize and transport folks with buses to the main starting points for hikes from the easiest to those reserved for experienced alpine climbers. It is a common daily sight to see people walking around wearing German hiking shoes, shorts, walking poles and knapsacks. They will have just come off a bus after having been somewhere up in the mountains. The large older crater area at the base of the volcano is called "Las CaÃ±adas" and it has an amazing lunar-like landscape, part of which was used in filming the original Planet of the Apes. You can see plenty of images of that on this Google image link. Teide is the name of the volcano. There was a cable car which ran nearly to the top which may still be in operation. My brother once took it and walked right up to the existing crater where it was hot, and the air was thin. Another beautiful hike is to the mountain hamlet of Masca. (Click to enlarge the photo at top left corner.) There the roads are so steep that I am nervous even driving in a car. There's a very steep hike from there down to the sea, where a small boat will pick up the hikers, but it's really for only the most experienced mountain climbers. Needless to say I haven't done that myself but I love to see the photos LOL. Ilisa I think everyone is feeling the cold right now even in Europe. A friend just e-mailed me that it's -0.4F in Munich, Germany right now ! Guess I shouldn't complain when I have to wear an extra sweater at night ! SharonCb

Tricia...no the Teide volcano is dormant but not dead. There was a small earthquake a few years ago, however the vulcanologists do keep a close eye on what is happening underground.

The one you are referring to is on the next island of La Palma, where there is a prediction that one side of the island could collapse and slide into the sea, causing a massive tsunami which would reach the east coast of North America. This theory has been disproved, although such a catastrophe could happen 10,000 years or more from now.

I forgot to answer your question...the last eruption was in 1909 and it is considered the 13th most dangerous volcano on earth due to its proximity
to populated areas. (Read that as...where I live.)

A little disconcerting isn't it! :-(

The insurance companies here specifically cited & used that prediction, along with hurricanes of course, to raise our premiums. Funny, isn't it, how the insurance companies never mentioned this recent Dutch study?! Anyway, I'm very glad to learn the La Palma volcano isn't going anywhere soon!

I want to go!!

Wonder if I can convince DH? I don't have the money, and visiting a friend (and one of my bridesmaids) who lives in Istanbul is top on my international travel list if/when we ever do get the money, but wow! How blessed you are to live in such a beautiful place.

You're right Colo lady and thanks for reminding me about this video! I've just been answering an email from an American man in PA who saw my blog about Tenerife and who is coming here with his wife next month. He was asking for any island info I could give him, and this video would be just right to send him.

I wonder if you saw the other nature video that was produced for TV as part of a series on the biodiversity of the seven Canary islands.
I find this one and its music truly beautiful and very well done.

Sharon, I love the video and all the pictures you post of Tenerife. I am going to visit there sometime. It's definately on our list of places we want to see.
