How to uninstall a damaged program?

Hi everybody, thanks for all your help when I posted previously, I got our computer working again, we can still hardly believe our luck!

There is only one problem now remaining; (it seems)

We can't get back on the internet. We have an internet guardian installed on our computer called Integard. This is provided for free by the Australian government to help families make the internet safe for kids. So far it's been great, but during the troubles with our computer the Integard program has been damaged. I can't uninstall it because it keeps giving a message that there has been tampering or file corruption. Also it shows a message that integard is damaged.

I have tried to install integard again, thinking that it might uninstall the damaged file, but i can't install it again because it needs internet access for that. And that is the problem, we think integard is blocking all sites therefore we can't use internet at all.

How can we uninstall this damaged program or is there anything else you can suggest?

Does your Government have a website for this Integard. I would imagine they would have a Frequently Ask Question (FAQ) section or possibly a toll free number to call. If there is a way, and it is uninstalled, you would eventually need a fresh copy.

This could be a good time for a free application named Revo Uninstaller. Some folks here rave about it. While I personally have used it with satisfaction, I have not used it enough to formulate an opinion.

The only possible holdup is the first step of Revo is for Revo to use the built-in target application's uninstaller followed by a more detailed approach by Revo. Since I have never attempted to use it on a corrupt application I am not sure it will work as desired. Only trying may tell.

One other step that I use: do s Start and Search. Type in the name of the software/game and see what shows up. If all are in the recycle bin (rare), no further work needed. If there are a few stragglers, do a right click on each of the files and delete. If one of the remnants is a file folder, do the deletion of the files in the folder, then the folder. Be aware that files sometimes have look-alikes with similar names that are used by the computer system.

I too had to get rid of the "free" Norton software that came with the most recent computer. I think that the success of Norton and other ultra-hyped software of similar nature is the result of "tests" done by PC Magazine, PC World and similar publications. I just searched PC Magazine's Reviews for "Norton" and it produced a lengthy set of values, comparing the magazine's ratings with those of readers. Many of the magazine's ratings were in the 4.0 to 4.5 but those of users were anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5. The magazine also bestowed "Editor's Choice" awards for many of the Norton products. So who do you trust - the printed hype that gets ad dollars from the software company or readers?

Okay. So I'm feeling reassured. I'll back up my data files again. Is there a simple command to back them all up at once - or a whole group at once. I'm sure the instructions are simple, but I've never done it. Grandms - I don't save most email, but I do save some. Some that are from a professional organization I'm on the Board of. Others that might include professional recommendations (plumbers, petsitters, etc) - things like that. I'm on a couple of listservs that often have very useful compilations of resources and professional recommendations.

You will certainly need help using a different computer. Download and save Revo on another computer but do not open/run the program. A storage device such as a flash drive would be a good way to do it and a small sized flash drive is now very inexpensive.

Don't forget to try an disable what ever fire wall you are currently using then try to connect again..

have you tried going into msconfig (start>run> msconfig> startup) and shutting any instances of this program from starting up on boot up of your pc? if not do that (reboot), also doing control.alt.delete to get to the task manager and looking to see if you have this program running in there if so end task on it there also. Once you have stopped all running processes of it then try going to control panel add remove programs and seeing if you can remove it there.

It may be necessary to start in safe mode to get rid of it.

I also recommend Revo uninstaller it is a very good program.

Ok I've tried to use revo uninstaller but at the first step it fails because it can't create a system restore point. what a bummer, it does look like an excellent program, I'm still happy to have it anyway!

I looked at the integard website but this is not a problem mentioned in the FAQs, they assume that you can always uninstall it when you have te password.
And that is the problem; I need to put in the password to uninstall the program, and i know the password, but this is when the message comes up to say there has been possible file corruption. SO therefore it doesn't accept the password and I can't uninstall it.

I went into msconfig and I did untick the box so it doesn't start up anymore, also checked the control-alt-delete option and stopped it running.

Still nothing has changed. I will try to ring the Free Toll Nr on Monday, but if anybody can come up with something else? Thank you so much for your help!!

Oh and this is probably really bad but I don't know what a firewall is, or where to find it on our pc??

Sometimes you can uninstall a program in safe mode that you can't uninstall in the full start up mode.
