What is causing web pages not to open?

Recently I have encountered frequent failures of web pages to open, and am wondering what causes this and what, if anything, I can do to correct the situation. Basically, when I try to open a site, nothing will happen for a while. Then after several tries at shutting everything down, I will get an "application not responding" notice. At that point, I will select "close" and start all over. This has been going on for about a couple of weeks; prior to that I had no problems at all along these lines.

I have a 4 month old Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop with McAfee suite that runs off a wireless router.

Any recommendations? TIA!

You might try releasing and renewing your Internet Protocol like so....

click Start
click Run
type ipconfig /release
click OK

After a few seconds it will be finished so then
Click Start
click Run
type ipconfig /renew
click OK

Note the space between ipconfig and the forward slash / no other spaces

Are you doing any system cleanups like getting rid of temp files etc
I assume its win Vista (you didnt say) go to start, Programs, accessories, System tools, disk cleanup.
Try that then let us know (XP should be basically the same location)

clearing the cache on IE has nothing to do with firefox you must clear them in firefox also, are you using the latest version of firefox? to know the version at the top click on help and about firefox. To clear the cache in firefox look under tools and see if you have an option there that says clear recent history near the bottom of the list, if yes click that and a box opens asking what all you want to clear I clear everything but the site preferences on mine also at the top of that box is a time range with a drop down arrow you can choose everything. The other way to do it is go to Tools Preferences/options then the security tab check where it says clear history when firefox closes then over to the right click on settings in that box select what you want to clear you can then close firefox and open it and it will clear all that you selected, now if you do not want it to do that every time you close firefox go back in there and un check to do it every time firefox closes, or just select for it to clear the cache each time it closes which is what I do. I agree with Bob414 it sounds like you have that page set to always open in IEview in your firefox browser you have to change that setting or it will continue to do that.

Thanks pkponder..He is going to call me back later I will tell him to try this. Yes it is a pretty new problem. He said when he shut off his computer Sunday night all was ok...then Monday he was trying to do a Google search on a subject and got IE's error...then he tried typing in other sites and same thing. He then tried his Favorites and they all work...I am going to tell him to type in an address of one of his Favs and see what happens then ..can't hurt...LOL.. jackie

Used to use notepad here but I have found webbuilder 2006 to be a great programmers tool simply for its ability to show me instantly through my local dev sever the product I am making, whether that be xhtml or server side scripting. It also is great for having line numbers and color codes in the code which makes tracking down errors a breeze. It has full CSS/CSS2 support as well, with full tracking of requireds, includes, classes, fucntions, and variables.

Do you have other Internet tasks set to automatically perform in the background, i. e. updates?

Is this an IE problem alone or do you have the same concern on any alternative browser you may be using?

Do you have some type of link scanner software configured to your system?

owbist and genes: I'll give both of your suggestions a try and provide some feedback later.

damccoy: Most of my scheduled tasks are set to run around 3am, but occasionally I'm logged on when something is being updated and things do run a bit sluggish because of that. The stuff I'm describing is quite a bit different in that it's more than just slower; I actually have to close out and start over. IE is the only browser I use. And I think the answer to your third question is no, if only because I don't understand what that is and therefore probably don't have it. Of course, I consider myself one of the "technically-challenged".

Here's the feedback I mentioned I would provide.

Things did seem to run a bit better after doing the disk cleanup and the release/renew. However, with the current IE security flap, I've switched to Firefox and it's noticeably faster/smoother, even when compared to the time when IE had no glitches.
